After a string of absurdly silly flicks like Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore, Adam Sandler showed us his softer side in The Wedding Singer. When Robbie's shallow girlfriend leaves him at the altar, the struggling wedding singer meets the bright-eyed and adorable Julia (Drew Barrymore) who is unfortunately engaged to a jerk. Throughout the movie, Robbie and Julia try to make sense of their newfound friendship, but fall in love and get married after Robbie makes the ultimate grand gesture on an airplane. This movie may be sweet, but it's also full of funny laugh-out-loud lines. Here are a few of my faves, but be sure to add yours in the comments below!

'80s Throwback! 10 Movies That Pay Homage to the Decade

Who doesn't love a good '80s movie? The shoulder pads, the hair bands, the abnormally large cell phones - many Hollywood films have tried to recreate the feeling of the era through film, including this week's release Take Me Home Tonight. The film's cast already had fun re-enacting classic '80s film scenes, but it got me thinking about other films that pay tribute to the beloved decade. Here are 10 of the most memorable!

Buzz Time Machine: Adam Sandler Serenades Drew Barrymore in The Wedding Singer

Adam Sandler may be starring with Jennifer Aniston in this week's Just Go With It, but in 1996, Drew Barrymore stepped in as his leading lady in The Wedding Singer. The film showed Sandler's softer side as Robbie Hart, a recently dumped wedding singer who meets a waitress (Barrymore) on the job. To win her over, he tries a grand romantic gesture: he performs an original song for her on an airplane with some help from Billy Idol.

Have You Ever Received an Entertainment-Inspired Romantic Gesture?

Valentine's Day is fast approaching and over the weekend I chatted with some of my friends who aren't too excited to do the same old, same old thing of cards and candy. So we started thinking up other romantic gestures - quirkier, cuter things that a sweetie might not expect. And of course, this turned into a discussion of romantic gestures taken from - or inspired by - movies and TV.

For example, I know a woman who had her guy stand outside her apartment with the trench coat and the boom box raised over his head, a la Lloyd Dobler (does that cross over into creepy? Discuss.). A guy friend of mine said he wishes he had the courage to play a song on his guitar in front of a plane full of strangers, like Robbie (Adam Sandler) in The Wedding Singer. There was also some discussion of how awesome it might be to receive 1,000 daisies, like Lorelei does on Gilmore Girls, or dozen after dozen of those lovely lavender roses that Lewis (Christian Slater) sends to Lisa (Mary Stuart Masterson) in Bed of Roses. And, of course, my boyfriend had to joke that for Valentine's Day he'll put on a suit, get me one rose and ask if I'll accept it (OK, I get it, that is what I get for putting him through countless hours of The Bachelor).

Movie Night: Wedding Workers

This week, the Sugar Network is a-twitter with the excitement of wedding planning mania, which got me thinking about all the hard workers who make those big days as perfect as possible. And then there are those who "work" weddings with a different agenda. Either way, it's time for a Movie Night all about wedding workers.

The Wedding Singer
Anytime this movie comes on TBS, I have to give up whatever I'm doing and watch it. As a result, I've seen this film dozens of times, and I love it more with each viewing. I can even forgive the utterly passionless kissing that goes on between Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler. The film follows schlubby-but-cute wedding singer Robbie (Sandler) as he pines for a fellow wedding worker, catering waitress Julia (Barrymore). Having been burned when his ex-fiancee left him at the altar, he's pretty bitter about love, and besides, Julia is herself betrothed to a sleaze bag. ("Julia Gulia?") But with a little confidence, some help from his friends, and a song he wrote himself that makes a little weepy every darn time, Robbie might just stand a chance at love. Wedding Crashers
Meet some guys who work weddings for a completely different reason: to meet ladies. Jeremy (Vince Vaughn) and John (Owen Wilson) are pros at pretending they know the bride or groom, grabbing some free food, and dancing drunkenly with the bridesmaids until they end up in bed with some girl who feels lonely amidst all the wedding romance. At one such wedding, John actually does meet the girl of his dreams but - isn't it always the case? - she's in a relationship with a Totally Wrong Guy (played by Bradley Cooper). Vaughn was basically born to play Jeremy, and Rachel McAdams manages to bring surprising dimension to her role. The best reason to watch Wedding Crashers, however, is the high-pitched, slightly insane "virginal" vixen Gloria, played hilariously by Isla Fisher.

The Wedding Planner
Jennifer Lopez is wedding planner Mary Fiore in this lighthearted rom-com that takes place against the lovely backdrop of San Francisco. When hired by the extremely wealthy Fran Donolly (Bridgette Wilson-Sampras), Mary promptly falls for her fiance Steve (Matthew McConaughey), who also happens to have saved Mary's life. A painful love triangle ensues, and they all learn some important lessons about being true to yourself. The most fun part is watching Mary stalk around the weddings she runs with a microphone headset like a frantic stage manager trying to remain calm.

Awesome Opening Title Sequences

I recently came across this list of the top 10 opening title sequences in movies, compiled by laboratory101.com. Granted, many of them are truly awesome: I have a particular fondness for the opening scenes of Snatch. Yet, I couldn't help noticing that they are basically all crime, horror, or gangster movies: Casino, Dawn of the Dead, Fight Club, Seven, etc. It got me thinking: Aren't there good opening sequences to movies that aren't violent?

Here are some of my picks for really well-done or entertaining opening sequences. What others can you think of?

Love Actually
I know I’ve said this before, but the footage of real people greeting each other at the airport is as heartwarming as a Kodak commercial, and even more so because it’s real.

Drop Dead Gorgeous
One of my all-time favorite films, Drop Dead Gorgeous opens with the promotional video for the Sarah Rose Cosmetics American Teen Princess Pageant, featuring "last year's host," Adam West. I particularly enjoy the programmed robot voice inserting "beautiful Mount Rose, Minnesota" to personalize the video.

Yes, that's right, Legally Blonde. It may not be the most life-changing of films, but I find this first sequence silly and entertaining: images of stereotypical sorority life intermingled with shots of Elle getting ready for her date, all to the tune of "Perfect Day." Note the bottle of blonde hair dye on Elle's vanity table!

Recently, I found myself with the prospect of being in Boulder, CO, for a long weekend. It was an opportunity that I seized faster than a dog would take leftovers. Aside from being home to the University of Colorado's flagship college campus, Boulder's also known for its food-centric, health-focused, and highly educated population - last year, it was even named America's Foodiest Town by Bon Appétit. I traveled with a mixture of anticipation and uncertainty, curious to find out if this town at the foot of the mountains lived up to all its hype. Read on to see where my stomach led me in Boulder.

It's Complicated: The Relationship Statuses of France's Presidential Candidates

This weekend, France will vote for its next president. After a first round, it's down to incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy and his socialist challenger Francois Hollande. Since Sarkozy was elected in 2007, a lot has changed. One of the most intriguing evolutions has been the love connections among the politicians.

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is technically the second first lady France has known under Sarkozy. When he was elected, he was married to his second wife ‪Cécilia Sarkozy (now Attias)‬. In 1983, then mayor Sarkozy conducted Cécilia's first wedding and reportedly fell in love with her that day. She left her husband in 1988 to live with Sarkozy, who didn't divorce his first wife until 1996, the same year he married Cécilia. They remained married during his first campaign. But only a few months after his May 2007 election, they announced their divorce and Cécilia confessed that she had run away with another man. Could you imagine Michelle Obama doing this months into Barack Obama's first term? Soon after the split, France would get another first lady in the form of Italian-born singer/supermodel Carla Bruni. Sarkozy met Carla Bruni a month after his split at a dinner party, and after a quick romance they married in Feb. 2008. They went on to have a daughter last year.

So what about Francois Hollande, the man who could beat Sarkozy and become France's next president? His love life actually has a Sarkozy connection. His partner from 1973 to 2007, Ségolène Royal was the person to go head-to-head against Sarkozy in the last presidential election. Ségolène and Francois were partners for more than 30 years and have four children together. Both are major figures in the country's Socialist Party, but a month after her 2007 loss to Sarkozy, they announced their separation. Soon, France learned the details of Francois Hollande's relationship with journalist Valérie Trierweiler, whom he's still with today. Without any hurt feelings, Ségolène has backed her ex-partner, who is now trying to accomplish something she couldn't: beating Nicolas Sarkozy.
