Tortilla and Cheese Lovers, Meet the Pupusa

A craving for Central American and Caribbean food as of late has meant I've scoured the streets of Miami for a decent cubano, as well as the colorful corners of San Francisco's Mission district for authentic Salvadoran pupusas.

Think of the pupusa as a more glorious quesadilla. The people of El Salvador flatten balls of corn dough (made of masa that's been treated with an alkaline solution) into flat filled cakes, each hiding a sliver of refried beans, pork, vegetables, and, more often than not, melted cheese, then heated until warm on the griddle. The end result's served piping hot with piquant curtido (pickled cabbage) and a thin red tomato-based salsa.

On a recent excursion to Balompie Café, the best pupusa I tried was a traditional version filled with cheese and loroco, a Central American flower bud that tasted a bit like bell peppers. If you love Latin flavors and have never laid eyes on the pupusa, it's a Salvadoran street food worth seeking out.

There are endless "natural" beauty and health brands out there making claims, and sometimes it feels like a second job just wading through all the information. Which is why The Detox Market is a great idea. The store's concept is simple: the founders curate one exemplary natural product in each beauty category (a sole lipstick, the best sunscreen, etc.) and sell everything in an uncluttered boutique. So instead of walking in and being overwhelmed by inconsistent labeling and hundreds of ingredient lists, you get a single high quality, prescreened option.

There are already two Detox Market locations in LA, but northern California just got its first, at 969 Valencia Street in San Francisco's Mission neighborhood. We paid a visit intending just to have a chat and a look around, but ended up buying half the store. As it turns out, most of the beauty selection includes stuff we already love or have been dying to try. They even carry some longtime Bella favorites, including sunscreen obsession, Suntegrity, and they were the first place we've seen actually carrying cult favorite Ilia lipstick, which we now can't stop applying. It might not be the store for people who love overwhelming variety, but for us, it made buying natural beauty fun again.

This past weekend saw the third annual San Francisco Street Food Festival, a gathering of San Francisco's most sought-after street merchants, food trucks, and restaurants, organized by nonprofit incubator kitchen La Cocina. The occasion - "a celebration of vendors and entrepreneurship," according to the organization - helped increase awareness (and funds) for up-and-coming food businesses. Know Your Ingredients: Porchetta

If there's one ingredient that may be able to oust bacon as the prized protein of the moment, it's porchetta. It's been appearing everywhere in farmers markets, Italian restaurants, and sandwich shops around San Francisco.

Pronounced "por-ketta," porchetta is an Italian specialty of slow-roasted suckling pig. A young, milk-fed piglet is gutted, deboned, stuffed with a mixture of garlic, herbs, and seasonings, then roasted whole in a wood-burning oven.

Porchetta originated in Lazio, a region of west central Italy, where it was probably a mountain food eaten during wintertime feasts. The specialty has since become entrenched in much of the country's culinary tradition. In Umbria, porchetta is flavored with fennel in garlic; in Rome, rosemary and garlic; in the Marches, wild herbs; and in Sardinia, myrtle leaves.

Sometimes referred to as "Italian pulled pork," porchetta is succulent, extremely fatty, and savory. In Rome, it's popular for street vendors to serve it sliced and sandwiched between a roll. Have you ever tried porchetta?

"When you think the pie is already set, it's already limited, so competing against the next guy to get a bigger piece of the pie seems pointless," he says.

You're stuck in the here and now

Someone stuck in this mindset may think they only have enough to make ends meet, says Johnston. In other words, they're living day-to-day, with nary an eye toward the future.

"They don't really put forth the effort, so they never get beyond thinking, 'Hey, if I made a little effort to cut back, I'd have something left over to invest,'" he says.

Make going on a BS diet a priority so you can stop spending on the things you don't want (or need) and have money left over to put the rest toward savings or investments.

You're on the paycheck-to-paycheck treadmill

Much like living day-to-day keeps you trapped in a scarcity mindset, spending your paycheck at the beginning of the month only to be left counting down the days until you receive the next check is no way to increase your net worth, or total assets minus liabilities (debt).

Here's a tip: Memorize the only equation you'll ever need to master you finances - Wealth equals what you earn minus what you spend. Live by it.
