A Simple Guide to Writing Your Own Wedding Vows

Choosing to write your own wedding vows can make for a special, personalized ceremony - but it can also mean late nights spent agonizing over each and every line. Your wedding vows are some of the most meaningful words you'll ever say, so it's important to take your time and consider all the possibilities. To make things a bit easier for you, we've come up with a few simple, helpful ideas that will streamline the process.

Set Guidelines:

Decide early on whether you'd prefer to write your vows together or individually. Another option? You can write an opening or closing line together, then personalize the rest of the vows separately.
If you plan to write them individually, agree on a proper length. Depending on the length of your ceremony, you should aim to speak for around 30 seconds to one minute each.
Consider the reading options. Are you good at memorization? Are you worried that your nerves will get the best of you? Ask yourselves if you'd like to memorize your vows or repeat them after your officiant.

Plan Ahead:

To stay sane, don't wait until the last minute. Several months before the big day, start a brainstorm list on your phone or in a notebook so that you can jot down ideas as they come to you.
Be on the lookout for phrases, quotes, or special moments you may want to include. Check out sample vows online to get an idea of which style and content appeals most to you. A poem? A list? A few simple sentences?

Gather Inspiration:

Step back and consider your relationship: its past, the present, and what you hope for the future. Jot down some special memories and funny anecdotes, then list the qualities you love most in your fiancé.
To get in the writing zone, reread your favorite quotes, poems, or even novels. Don't be afraid to deviate from the norm, either. Personal vows can be as traditional or as unconventional as you'd like, so get creative and let yourself think outside the box.

Edit, Edit, Edit:

Remember that you're writing wedding vows - a promise, not a flowery speech - so you should get to the heart of what you want to say. Be thoughtful and concise, and do your best to make every word count.

Rachel McAdams Beams Following News of Her Best Kiss Nomination

Rachel McAdams stopped at an LA ATM yesterday and grabbed some pocket change before heading on her way. She bundled up in an ASOS poncho on the dreary day, but was all smiles despite the unseasonable chill. Rachel kicked off the day with news that she and her The Vow costar Channing Tatum are among the 2012 MTV Movie Awards best kiss nominees.

Channing and Rachel are going head-to-head against Breaking Dawn Part 1 sweethearts Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, as well as The Hunger Games' Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson - which sexy couple are you rooting for? This isn't the first time Rachel's been nominated in the kiss category. Obama National Co-Chair Eva Longoria Talks Women and Politics

Eva Longoria is leaving Wisteria Lane for the campaign trail. Earlier this year, the actress was named a national co-chair for President Obama's reelection campaign. We chatted with Eva today, and she told us that she thinks Obama will be an easy sell with American women. Eva said, "I am going to be donating most of my time in the Fall to the Obama campaign. I think women will have a very clear choice of who to vote for in this election. One side is clearly attacking the progress of women's rights and another side is not so I think women will have a very clear choice of who they want to vote for."

Eva will be taking a break from acting as she gets more involved with politics, and this change in direction has also led her to go back to school to get a master's in Mexican-American studies with the hope that she'll be more informed about the issues important to her. She gave us the back-to-school details: "I'm in school getting my master's degree. I finished my coursework, now I'm just working on my thesis." Eva says it's been "rewarding and joyful" and that she "loves learning."

But there have also been some less-than-serious moments: "It was funny at the beginning especially being there with my younger classmates. It was a lot of fun going back and having to relearn that process of school and highlighters and notebooks and backpacks. My friends make fun of me because I have a really big backpack."
