TV Tonight: The Next Great American Band

There are two key ingredients to the basic American Idol recipe: there's music, and the audience picks the winner. Idol is the biggest thing on TV, but Fox's attempts at separating the two elements that make it so successful haven't worked out so well - On the Lot, all voting and no music, limped to a finish, while Nashville, all music and no voting, was the first of the fall's new shows to be pulled.

But both parts of the Idol formula will be in full effect tonight during the premiere of The Next Great American Band, essentially a large-scale battle of the bands. Like Idol, the show is starting with several two-hour audition episodes that will narrow the field to 12 finalists. And, also like Idol, the audience will eventually have a say in which band wins. There's one key difference from Idol, and it's the thing I think could make the show kind of cool: The bands are playing their own music or selecting their own cover tunes, not using songs or genres chosen by producers. I'm hoping that carries through all the way to the finals, because I never want to hear a band called Zombie Bazooka Patrol take on Whitney Houston ballads.

I still don't know how smart it is to put a show that relies on audience participation on a Friday - and it's hard for me to imagine that Fox has much faith in it when, as of this writing, the network still hasn't built the show a proper Web site. Fox Picks Its Host, Judges for "American Band"

After "On the Lot," I'm a little wary of Fox dipping its toes into any new reality markets. But so far, it sounds like "The Next Great American Band," the "American Idol" crew's search for a new group to rule the airwaves, is keeping it all in the "Idol" family with its host and judges.

Host Dominic Bowden may be a newcomer to American TV, but he's well-known in New Zealand for hosting "New Zealand Idol." And judge Ian "Dicko" Dickson has pretty good music bonafides (he worked in promotions for Oasis and LL Cool J), but he's made his mark as the outlandish, Simon Cowell-esque judge on "Australian Idol." Joining Dicko at the judges' panel will be Goo Goo Dolls singer/songwriter John Rzeznik and Prince protege Sheila E. It may not be the strongest group ever, but really, if you'd heard back in 2002 that Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul were judging a reality show, wouldn't you have thought that would be dead in the water, too?

Here's how the show will work: After auditions, the judges will pick 10 semifinalists to perform weekly in front of a live audience. The competition will include both original music from the bands and covers of various styles. Voting will start at the end of each show, and the eliminated band will be announced at the start of the following week's episode.

Given that the show's airing on Fridays at 8 p.m., I can't imagine it would be as popular as an "Idol" or even a "So You Think You Can Dance." Are any of you curious to check it out?

There goes another staple in award season - the Grammys are a wrap! The night was chock-full of performances from standouts like Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga, but there were a few statuettes passed out between songs.

Muse frontman Matt Bellamy took the opportunity to thank his "beautiful pregnant girlfriend" Kate Hudson while accepting the trophy for best rock album, and Lady Gaga gave props to Whitney Houston in her acceptance speech for best pop album. Lady Antebellum scored big with five golden gramophones, but it was Arcade Fire that won the biggest award of the night, taking home the accolade for album of the year.

Can Leggings Fight Cellulite?

We are pumped to share one of our fave stories from Self here on FitSugar!

Dimples on your face? Adorable! On your thighs and butt? Well, not so much.

Cellulite is a genetic reality for almost 90 percent of women, which is why we're always intrigued and - we'll admit it - tempted by products such as these Turbocell Leggings. The manufacturer claims the compression technology will "micro-massage" away cellulite, reducing dimples by 20 percent and taking 2 inches off your thighs and butt.

The catch: You must wear the leggings eight hours a day, for eight weeks. And could they possibly work anyway? To find out if they're brilliant or bogus, we spoke to two leading cellulite experts.

The first thing to understand is what, exactly, cellulite is.

"If you imagine your skin . . . under that skin is a subcutaneous fatty layer and the next layer is the fascia, a shiny surface that overlies the muscle," says Barry M. Weintraub, MD, spokesman for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. "From the back of the skin, going through the fat and attaching to the fascia layer are bands called fibrous bands. Those fibrous bands keep the skin sitting where it needs to be."

When you gain weight, the number of fat cells don't increase (you're born with a set number), rather the size of the cells increase so they can store more fat in the individual cell. This pushes everything up around the back of the band, which can cause a dimple.

So, could the leggings be a magic bullet?

True Blood Bites: "And When I Die"

Wow. The season four finale of True Blood is slow going at first, but the final moments both knocked the wind out of me and left me speechless. Halloween comes to Bon Temps, and the holiday brings with it a whole slew of events that are a lot scarier than Arlene and Terry's zombie makeup. The residents are visited by plenty of blasts from the past (and the implication of yet another one), and by the end of the episode, a handful of major characters join the ranks of the dead.

I'm admittedly a bit irritated that there's no progress on the fairy front since we've been waiting all season long to see what that whole business in the premiere is about, but there's certainly plenty of setup for next year's stories. I can't wait to share my thoughts with you and hear yours, so beware the spoilers when you

Worst table manners: Marnie doesn't exactly do a great Lafayette imitation, and she stabs Jesus with a fork on the first chance she gets. It only gets worse from there, as she ties Jesus to a chair and demands that he give her his magic powers. Unfortunately, you can't just trade powers "like Pokemon cards" (guess it's still the late '90s in Bon Temps), and Jesus sacrifices himself in hopes of saving Lafayette, allowing Marnie to take his Latin voodoo by drinking his blood. Yum.
Most decent proposal: Now that Debbie is out of the picture, Alcide rebounds by trying get into Sookie's heart. He lays it out for her at Merlotte's, but Sookie's not interested in a business-like partnership when it comes to her feelings - even though Alcide promises a drama-free relationship through his ~~puppy dog~~ big werewolf eyes. It feels a bit like Sookie is denying the obvious chemistry she's been having with Alcide all this time, but maybe she just needs time to think it over. Are you rooting for these two to finally hook up next season?
Best night of the living dead: Marnie wastes no time turning Bill and Eric into a shirtless vampire-kebab, but Tara, Holly, and Sookie coming storming in to save the day. Thanks to Holly's Wiccan first aid kid, the ladies raise the dead to come to their rescue. Most notably, Antonia and Gran arrive to knock some sense into Marnie, after the witch drones on and on yet again about how nobody appreciates her. Thankfully, it's all over quickly as Marnie finally takes off and Bill and Eric are released.
Hottest new guy: As promised, Scott Foley arrives at Merlotte's, as one of Terry's long-lost Marine friends. It's no wonder that Foley had no problem balancing True Blood with Grey's Anatomy, as he only gets a very short scene that reveals that Terry once saved his life. It sounds like we can expect a lot more from him though: Rene rises from the grave to warn Arlene about the "ghost of Terry's past." Let the speculation begin, my friends.
Most anticlimactic moment: After Sookie has a ménage à trois (or her blood does, anyway) with Bill and Eric, it's decision-making time. Two vampires. Both of them hot. Both of them wearing identical robes. So what's a fairy to do? She chooses neither. We all saw it coming, but it's still pretty lame.
Most ominous performance by a parking lot: Alcide gets a mysterious phone call and is called to a parking garage, where he finds a hole in the cement and some chains. In real life this could mean a few things, but on True Blood it can only mean one: the former vampire king has returned. And he's probably pissed off.
Sexiest duo: Who needs Sookie when you can have Bill and Eric working together? When Nan Flanagan comes into Bill's office to convince the vampires to help her rebel against the American Vampire League, Bill and Eric take about ten seconds before they wipe out Flanagan and her team of armed guards in one fell swoop. Not only is it fun to see them working together, but their banter has never been better (exhibit A: "I liked you better when you were brain damaged").
The TMI award goes to: Jason Stackhouse! Jason decides to come clean with Hoyt, but the adorably dim guy gets a little too graphic with the details, recounting all the positions he and Jessica did it in. Hoyt reacts with punches and harsh words (can't really blame the guy), particularly in telling Jason that he's missing something inside. Luckily, Jessica is there to lick his wounds, though she tells Jason that she's not ready to commit to a relationship because she's afraid she'll hurt him. Just when Jason's bad day begins to perk up thanks to some sweet post-coital moments with his little red riding hood, he gets a very unexpected visitor. Reverend Newlin comes knocking at Jason's door, showing off his pearly white fangs.
Best best friend: I guess I should have figured that Tara was doomed as soon as she mentioned growing old with Sookie on the porch. After a long night of taking Marnie down and tucking Lafayette into bed, Tara becomes a "magnet for f*cking craziness" one last time. When Debbie Pelt comes looking for Sookie equipped with a rifle, Tara takes a bullet for her best friend - and from the looks of it, she's a goner. At least her death wasn't in vain: Sookie seizes the gun and (possibly inadvertently) shoots Debbie in the face. I'll sleep better tonight knowing that Debbie is finally gone for good, but I'm going to miss Tara.

Prepare For Natural Disasters With an Emergency Kit For Your Home

On Tuesday afternoon, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake, an aftershock of the 7.1 magnitude quake on Sept. 4, collapsed buildings in Christchurch, New Zealand. Initial reports suggest that damage and fatalities far exceed that registered in the initial quake. Scary stuff indeed. Here in the Bay Area, a major earthquake in the next 10 years is nearly an inevitability. Whether your home is located in an area that's in danger of experiencing an earthquake, hurricane, tornado, or major snowstorm, it's smart to be prepared. The American Red Cross recommends having enough food and water on hand to support every member of your household for at least three days. They've also got a great list of other must haves you may not have thought of, including bleach and a non-electric can opener.

Water. The Red Cross recommends one gallon per day per person, including pets. If you don't have any stored, why not make a habit of picking up a gallon or two every time you go to the supermarket?
Food. Concentrate on ready-to-eat canned fruits, veggies, juice, and meat, as well as protein-rich snacks like trail mix and granola bars. Don't forget vitamins and special supplies for any elderly family members, babies, and pets.
A first-aid kit with Band-Aids, latex gloves, gauze pads, a thermometer, over-the-counter drugs, and necessary prescription medications.

For the other essentials,

Tools such as scissors, tweezers, a sewing kit, a manual can opener, a knife, and a wrench to turn off gas and water.
Moist towelettes and antibacterial hand gel
Sunscreen
Paper cups, plates, and plastic utensils
A hand-crank or battery-operated radio, with batteries
Flashlights with extra batteries
Candles and matches
Cash
Small fire extinguisher
Toilet paper, feminine products, and garbage bags
Dish soap
Bleach
Blankets or sleeping bags
Rain gear

Do hunt for the perfect tee on eBay. eBay's loaded with authentic, vintage t-shirts, with rare tees going for premium prices. eBay stores like WyCo Vintage and Stormcrow-Vintage are stocked with an impressive variety of amazing band tees for around $50 and up.
Other great sites to check out: Wolfgang's Vault has a selection of vintage and retro tees shoppable by artist; while Slingshot Shirts carries a budget-friendly selection of new tees with vintage prints.
