Critics Love Lost, Hate The Moment of Truth

The results of the latest TV Week critics' poll are out, and Lost has claimed a spot at the top of the list. Critics ranked the show first for the six months starting in January, beating out The Wire for the No. 1 slot. The show apparently won by a wide margin, claiming a spot in the top five on almost every list submitted.

Because of the writers' strike, it's even tougher than usual to compare this Summer's list with the Winter rankings that found Pushing Daisies at the top; that show didn't air a single episode in 2008, so it didn't qualify. But there were still a few interesting changes to note, including the jump of The Office from No. 8 in the Winter to No. 4 now. But 30 Rock came in at No. 3, leapfrogging over The Office for the first time to claim the title of highest-ranked comedy on the list. Three CBS comedies - How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, and The New Adventures of Old Christine - also ranked in the top 25.

On the worst side, The Moment of Truth topped the list, prompting one critic to proclaim, "This is the worst in every category into which it can be fitted." I just have to feel a little sorry for poor The Return of Jezebel James, though - sure, it didn't come close to expectations, but was it really worse than Secret Talents of the Stars?

The Moment of Truth is a new reality game show on Fox. The premise? One sucker takes the stage to answer a series of questions. When the truth is told, the sucker wins a whole bunch of moolah- but at what cost? A lady in Colombia admitted to hiring a hit man to kill her husband and won $25,000 for her honesty. What do we think she's going to spend that money on- a pony? The woman wanted her husband dead for Pete's sake! Anyway, here's some dude named Ray. He's a petty thief who resents his mother and likes pornography, but really loves his wife. . .

ComingSoon has news that Jesse L. Martin will play Marvin Gaye in a biopic titled Sexual Healing. James Gandolfini will co-star in and produce the project.
Variety reports on Josh Hartnett's next role in the martial arts action movie Bunraku.
Fox has ordered 13 more episodes of The Moment of Truth, Zap2it reports.
According to Hollywood Reporter, Emily Blunt will star in the immigration drama The Girl.
ComingSoon has the scoop on the Space Chimps video game, which will be based on the upcoming movie.
Jordin Sparks will sing the national anthem at Sunday's Super Bowl and Alicia Keys will provide pregame entertainment, the Associated Press reports.
Speaking of the Super Bowl, expect kinder, gentler ads this year, writes The New York Times.

TV Tonight: The Moment of Truth

The previews for The Moment of Truth, the new Fox series that premieres tonight after American Idol, have been making me squirm - and I think that means they're doing their job. The series features contestants hooked up to lie detectors while being asked personal, potentially humiliating questions - "Do fat people repulse you?" and "Would you ever cheat on your wife?" among them. Answering honestly means earning money, with those who answer all 21 questions truthfully going home with $500,000. Hey, they might not have spouses or friends anymore, but at least they're rich!

I've been curious about the Fox version of this show ever since the Colombian game show it's based on was yanked off the air amid controversy over the summer. Now, after relentless promotion (which included a Truth Booth in Santa Monica where passersby subjected themselves to the show's prying questions without money on the table), it's finally making its debut. But will it be good entertainment that reveals interesting things about our culture - or will it just be too uncomfortable to watch?

First Look: The Moment of Truth

Would you tell the truth about your darkest secrets if you could win $500,000? That's the central question of Fox's new game show, The Moment of Truth, which premieres in late January. The show asks contestants to answer a series of questions about their lives, from the relatively innocuous ("Do you really care about starving children in Africa?") to the deeply personal ("Have you ever cheated on your spouse?"). Those who make it through all 21 questions without lying go home with $500,000.

The series is based on a Colombian game show that became notorious earlier this year, when a woman admitted to hiring a man to kill her husband - and won $25,000 as a result. Colombian officials quickly stepped in and canceled the show, but it had already become a sensation, even prompting people to buy their own lie detectors. (Fox says its show won't ask about felonies, sticking to things that could be humiliating but not incriminating.)

This concept makes me very uncomfortable, but I've heard so much about it that I'll have to check it out come Jan. 23. What about you? To watch a preview, just

Separate from the standard iPhone app, we've broken down how to use Camera below.

Browse albums - Get to the goods fast. Once the Camera app is launched, you can browse through friends' photos with a swipe and get a better view with a double-tap of an image.
Edit photos - Crop, edit, and filter photos within the app rather than uploading to a separate editing app, saving to the camera roll, and then uploading to Facebook. We know that tired drill.
Upload multiple images - The time has come to stop spamming your feed with individual mobile uploads at a time. Select two, three, or go crazy with 14 images uploaded at one time.

Does all this sound familiar? With Facebook's Instagram acquisition we've been waiting to see how the social sharing companies join forces - but that moment is still yet to arrive. Facebook says the filters and functions of Camera were built in-house, not using the Instagram resources. So yes, Camera is just one more handy photography app to add to your collection.

Grey's Anatomy Rundown, "Moment of Truth"

As the title of this week's episode of Grey's Anatomy suggests, the moment the Seattle Grace residents have been waiting for has finally arrived: the boards. Jackson, Cristina, April, Meredith, and Karev are all gearing up for the big day, but they each have very different obstacles in their way. April is naturally freaking out, Karev can't get his mind off Morgan and Tommy, and Meredith comes down with the stomach flu at the worst possible time.

And then there are the doctors who aren't taking the test: Lexie is still taunted by her feelings for Mark, Teddy and Owen are at each other's throats, and Webber gives himself a break - with the help of Jackson's mom. Let's break down all the highlights of the episode when you

As the big day inches steadily closer, April is panicking more than ever. When she's not crying or snapping at people, she also finds time to accidentally tip off a fellow doctor that she snatched up the job he wanted for next year. Later, the same doctor drunkenly confronts her about the situation and April really loses her cool - she punches the guy out! High on confidence from her moment, she lunges at Jackson and tells him she's ready to lose her virginity. Jackson is actually really sweet about the whole situation, but April is clearly having some regrets immediately after. First, she kicks Jackson out of bed, then she hilariously freaks out about Jesus "hating her." It initially seems like a little sex might be just what April needs to chill out, but now I'm thinking she may have dug her own grave by giving herself yet another issue to agonize over.
While Jackson is busy making a woman out of his best friend, his mom is also getting a little action. Was anyone else a little weirded out by the way Jackson's sex scene is juxtaposed with his mom's? Mrs. Avery runs to Dr. Webber at the test site in San Francisco, and it's not long before she's whipping out all of her moves over dinner. Dr. Webber acquiesces, and they hop into the sack. It all seems well and good - Webber doesn't even seem to be having any regrets about Adele - until Jackson comes knocking on the door looking for his lucky pencil and instead finds the former chief in a bathrobe. Whoops.
One person who isn't getting any is Lexie, though it's not for lack of wanting. With Jackson away, Mark's a little restless around the hospital, so he turns his attention to Lexie. She does her best to try to keep her distance, but she can't help flirting a little. She even comes close to admitting her feelings but stalls when Mark tells her that she and Jackson made a great couple. Poor Lexie ends up literally crying on Derek's shoulder about how much the situation sucks - but I have a feeling it's all leading up to a big season finale reunion. On a related note - when was the last time Mark even mentioned his girlfriend?
With Meredith battling the flu, Cristina comes to her rescue with lots of Gatorade and other reinforcements (behind the safety of a surgical mask and closed door). The two have a heart to heart where Cristina finally opens up about her issues with Owen, but Meredith has a hard time consoling her when Cristina keeps going back and forth about what she wants to do with Owen. I was fully convinced that these two are done, but now it seems like Cristina is warming up to the idea of a reconciliation - what do you think?
Alex has been keeping his distance since his fallout with Morgan, but he can't stay away from her and baby Tommy this week. Arizona basically has to force him onto the shuttle to San Francisco, but even then he continues to call her every hour with ideas. Eventually he can't take any more and hops back on a plane to Seattle, but he's too late. Arizona informs Karev that it's finally over, and he sits with Morgan as she watches Tommy takes his final breaths. After the heartbreaking scene, Arizona convinces Alex that he should try to get back to SF in time for his boards, but in the final moments of the episode, we learn that he doesn't make it.

With only a few episodes to go, it seems like things are finally starting to get juicy on Grey's. Were you surprised about April and Jackson? Which doctors do you think will pass the boards?

Feeling Tempted To Call An Ex?

My "Stop, Drop, and Roll" technique is my tried and true, all-time favorite method for avoiding Relationship Groundhog Day (the insanity of doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result), which is what we do when we make impulsive, unconscious choices like calling an ex when we know better. Learning this skill is not only effective but, according to scientific studies, developing delayed gratification has been associated with success in all areas of life. It works just like a fire drill!

Stop:

True love does not have a shelf life, Real love will be here tomorrow, next week, and next year! Your life is not a movie, and healthy relationships do not thrive on drama, low self-esteem, neediness, loneliness, fear, etc.

Drop:

Drop the story you are telling yourself by thinking it all the way through. Ask yourself, "What do I really want? Why am I so desperate? What do I expect my ex to do for me on the other end of the phone?" Then sit down for a moment and listen to your answers. Don't get up until you have the courage to tell yourself the whole truth.

Most often we dial our ex because we are lonely, bored, need validation that we are lovable, are romanticizing the past, need a "fix," or want to avoid feeling something that makes us uncomfortable. When we drop in, essentially we are learning the most profound relationship skill of all, self-inquiry.

Self-inquiry is key to avoiding self-destructive patterns, developing self-love, and attracting a great partner! When we learn how to be with our discomfort (sit quietly and listen to our own real needs, let the pain, etc., come up and out) we learn we can give ourselves what we need, or at least get clarity. If we don't know what we feel, we don't know what we need. Once we have developed this critical skill we can avoid dragging ourselves and our ex through another unconscious round of voluntary pain and suffering!

Roll:

Once you have interrupted your impulse by stopping and dropping into what's really going on, then you get to choose. Our ability to choose is what keeps us from repeating self-destructive patterns and separating us from what our hearts truly desire. When we have given ourselves the space to think through what we need, then and only then can we access these real choices - primarily because we are now internally focused.
