What to Rent: New DVD Tuesday

Whether you're feeling like a light, fluffy kind of movie or something with more depth, this week's DVD releases run the gamut. In addition to these three, Extraordinary Measures featuring Harrison Ford and Keri Russell also comes out today.

Valentine's Day

Featuring the likes of Julia Roberts, Ashton Kutcher, Anne Hathaway, and Jennifer Garner, this romantic comedy has plenty of star power for what it lacks in substance. The ensemble film follows multiple couples on the lovey-doviest day of the year, telling their individual stories. Unfortunately, by attempting to cover too much at once, the movie sort of glazes over each relationship, giving it more of a cute montage feel than anything with an actual meaty plot. That being said, it could be the perfect rental for a girly night in. Special features include several deleted scenes.

Invictus

This biopic of Nelson Mandela (portrayed by the excellent Morgan Freeman) follows the iconic leader after his release from prison. Stuck with the difficult task of restoring a post-apartheid country, Mandela tries to bring the divided community together using a struggling rugby team and its captain (Matt Damon). Helmed by Clint Eastwood, Invictus isn't the director's best work - and it's a little too long - but it is the kind of well-acted, inspirational film that has you rooting for its characters. Special features on the Blu-Ray version include a featurette where Freeman meets Mandela for his role and a documentary spanning Eastwood's career.

The Messenger

Ben Foster plays Will, a young staff sergeant recruited for one of the most difficult duties in the service - notifying the families of soldiers who die in combat. He's placed under the watch of a hardened captain (Woody Harrelson) who prefers to keep the emotional distance needed to finish the job. As they butt heads, Foster questions the Captain's tactics and finds himself growing close to one of the widows he encounters. Watch it for Harrelson's Oscar-nominated performance, but only if you're in the mood to take on something heavy. Special features include a featurette of interviews with the various cast and crew members.

We're just a few days away from the 2010 Oscar nomination announcements - I'll be rising early on Feb. 2 to report who got a nod, but until then, I'm getting my predictions in now. I've already told you who I think will be up for best actor and best actress, and now here's another five I think are worthy of an Academy Award nod: the best supporting actors.

Movie Preview: The Messenger

We've all seen 'em: those heart-breaking, suspenseful scenes in war movies, when the family of a missing soldier anxiously waits by the window for an update. From Army Wives and beyond, our sympathy naturally gravitates to the friends and family as they take in the news, but what about the soldiers who have to issue the depressing notices?

In The Messenger, Woody Harrelson and Ben Foster star as two soldiers responsible for informing families that their loved ones aren't coming back from the war. As the younger of the two, Foster's character finds himself faced with a moral dilemma when he extends some extra sympathy to one of the widows he meets along the way.

It's refreshing to see Harrelson back in serious mode for a change, and the premise brings a different aspect of war into focus as we learn more about the inner workings of the seemingly stoic men in uniform at all those front doors. The film hits theaters on Nov. 13, and to see the trailer, just

Oxygen's Talk Sex with Sue is ending this week, but its sassy 77-year-old host promises she'll keep giving lectures, the Associated Press reports.
AMC has renewed Breaking Bad for a 13-episode second season, writes the Hollywood Reporter.
According to Variety, Eva Mendes, Josh Hartnett and Ben Kingsley will topline Queen of the South (La reina del sur), an adaptation of the bestselling novel by Spanish author Arturo Perez Reverte.
The Screen Actors Guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have broken off talks without a contract, raising new fears about an actors' strike, TV Guide reports.
Madonna scored her seventh career No. 1 album this week, Billboard reports, with Mariah Carey coming in at No. 2 and Leona Lewis at No. 3.
Ugly Betty plans to move production from LA to New York City next season, writes Zap2it.

BlackBerry Messenger May Be Heading to Android and iOS

Anyone who's had a BlackBerry will likely tell you that BlackBerry Messenger is one of the coolest features on the device. It allows free and fast messaging to any other BlackBerry user by using a special PIN without worry of text messaging fees. Plus, it allowed you to see when your message was read - a helpful if slightly stalkerish feature. After switching to an iPhone from a BlackBerry, I certainly missed the service, even feeling slightly out of touch with friends still on BBM. Now, if a new rumor is correct, BBM is soon coming to Android and iOS devices.

New Year's Eve

Garry Marshall's latest ensemble comedy features a whole bushel of A-listers. Everyone from Ashton Kutcher to Robert De Niro makes an appearance in the flick that features stories of people experiencing New Year's Eve in New York City. The movie also stars Glee's Lea Michele as an aspiring singer, Michelle Pfeiffer as a woman on a mission to cross items off her bucket list, Zac Efron as the bike messenger who helps her, Katherine Heigl as Jon Bon Jovi's super angry ex-girlfriend, and many others. Though the film isn't the best in the genre, it's fun to see all the stars assembled and matched-up together. Extras include director's commentary, a gag reel, and deleted scenes.

Haywire

Real-life mixed martial arts fighter Gina Carano stars as Mallory Kane, a skilled black ops soldier on a mission for revenge after she is betrayed. Director Steven Soderbergh wrote the story around Carano after seeing her in a match, which means her butt-kicking skills are the focus of this action thriller. Also showcased? Antonio Banderas, amazing chase sequences, Channing Tatum, and lots and lots of hand-to-hand combat. Extras include a featuring looking at "the men of Haywire" and Gina Carano's training for the movie.

Abbie Cornish and James D'Arcy star in W.E., a historical romance directed and cowritten by Madonna. Cornish plays a modern woman obsessed with learning about the decades-old love affair between King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough), the woman he gave up the throne to be with. The film won accolades for its style, even landing an Oscar nomination for achievement in costume design. DVD extras include a making-of piece featuring Madonna.
