TV News Tidbits: Amy Sedaris, Jada Pinkett Smith, and More

It's that time again! The twice-yearly Television Critics Association press tour kicked off in Los Angeles this week, which means the TV news is going to flow fast and furious for the next week or so. PBS and cable take the stage this week, and then the network portion kicks in early next week, when Molly and I will be flying down to LA to blog and Twitter this tour ourselves!

Until then, I'm keeping an eye on some of the TV news coming out, both from the networks that are presenting and the others that are just making announcements. Some of the highlights so far:

TNT has picked up two new drama series, including Jada Pinkett Smith's project, Time Heals. The other series is The Line, a cop drama starring Dylan McDermott.
Unsurprisingly, Amy Sedaris had the crowd in stitches at the PBS panel yesterday. She's narrating a new PBS miniseries called Make 'Em Laugh: The Funny Business of America, which airs starting Jan. 14. Oh, and apparently Amy does not like the internet very much, but the internet still loves her.
If you like Discovery Channel shows, then get a load of this: The network has at least seven new shows coming soon, including Out of the Wild, in which suburbanites are dropped into the Alaskan wilderness and have to find their way back to civilization. (I'm not kidding - I'd totally watch that.)
Ian McKellen will not be nude for the PBS version of King Lear. So uh, you can cross that off your calendar, I guess.

Fox has announced its Winter schedule, and is moving "houses" with Dollhouse on Fridays and House on Mondays. - Zap2it
Antonio Banderas is in talks to portray Salvador Dali in the indie biopic, Dali. - Variety
Dylan McDermott will play the lead in a TNT pilot called The Line, about a group of undercover LAPD officers. - The Hollywood Reporter
HBO has bought the rights to a documentary about Barack Obama that's been in the works since 2006. - AP
In other Obama-related news, Bruce Springsteen's next album is expected for release around the time of Obama's January inauguration. - Billboard
Reiko Aylesworth is in talks to join the cast of Lost as "Amy, a smart and successful professional woman with a love for the outdoors who is looking for the right man." - ComingSoon

Valentine's Cards For Your Double-Hearted Time Lord

Since Time Lords have two hearts, we presume their Valentine's Day celebrations are doubly romantic. BBC America must agree as they released a set of free Doctor Who love coupons to send to your own Time Lord or special companion. With nods to the mysterious power of regeneration, the Doctor's favorite meal, and promises of a fez, this card will make a Whovian swoon.

If a loving look at all things Who isn't enough for you, the BBC finally announced that the filming of the show's next season begins on Feb. 20 in Cardiff, Wales. The Ponds are returning to the story line, but it's clear they'll be leaving the series for good next season under sad circumstances.

Pretty Ways to Spice Up Your Valentine's Day Makeup - Red Lipstick Excluded

Red lipstick has become synonymous with Valentine's Day, but crimson-hued lips don't have to be your only option. "I like a flushed cheek," says Mark celebrity makeup artist Mai Quynh, who recommends getting the look with the brand's Just Pinched Blush Tint in Cheeky or Spicy, depending on your skin tone.

Another way to give your complexion a fresh, fun finish is "to incorporate a pink-toned eye shadow to pop up the eyes in the crease," Quynh explains, recommending Custom Pick Eye Shadow in Sugar Sugar. "Or, you can use pink lips instead of red ones."

And for a brightened effect, finish with a highlighter, such as Touch & Glow Shimmer Cream All Over Face Palette, above your cheekbones and on your brow bone. For something a little warmer, try Glowdacious Illuminating Powder on your forehead, cheeks, and chin. Then all you have to do is watch your suitors line up.  

Don't Be Afraid to Play With Scale

In a recent interview on Dering Hall, Los Angeles-based designer Peter Dunham shared his thoughts on his line Hollywood at Home and offered excellent decorating tips.

One of my favorite tips from Dunham concerns scale - and the fact that we should consider it more carefully when decorating. Scale is just as important as pattern and color when decorating a space.

Dunham says,

In a high-ceilinged room, use an oversized chandelier. De-electrify it and just use it with candles so it becomes a piece of sculpture rather than a glaring light fixture, and it anchors the space. In a small room, choose a bold, big-pattern print and cover everything in it, the French way: walls, curtains, upholstery, et cetera. It gives the room vibrancy and glamor. Also, use large, but fewer, pieces in a small room-like a sofa that may seem too big-so it feels luxurious. In a large room, use smaller-scale pieces to create several areas and bring the space more to human scale.

I love the way that Dunham plays with scale in the room above, using a bold patterned print for the walls and matching sofa. It's an important lesson to remember when redecorating a room - keep scale a playful, and important, consideration.

The Office, "Special Project": Best Lines of The Night

In this week's episode of The Office, Dwight has been chosen to spearhead a three week assignment in Tallahassee. He's putting together "a competent team" that will assist him on the mission, setting up a number of new Sabre locations. Half the episode deals with various relationship issues, and the rest is essentially an audition for the team that will head to Florida. There are some important plot points revealed: Val and Darryl vaguely express their feelings for each other, and Erin tells us she wants to head to Florida for good. While "Special Project" definitely has potential, this week just kind of landed flat for me.

Regardless, there are a few funny moments that stood out in my mind. To read a few of my fave lines from "Special Project," just keep reading.

Nicholas K Fall 2012

Nancy Sinatra's epic "Bang Bang," set the mood for Nicholas Kunz's Fall Nicholas K collection. Inspired by the Taos artists in the '20s and '30s, Kunz imagined a line bursting with western influence - we loved all of the cool Stetson-inspired hats - and a dash of deco. Fringe was heavily prevalent, making its way onto geometric leather jackets, sheer crochet dresses, and for a vintage touch, metallic flapper fringed dresses. For eveningwear, Kunz showed off her signature draping technique on a variety of gorgeous sexy bias-cut dresses and fluid tops. The outerwear category also shined: parka jackets came complete with inner straps (so the coat can hang just so off the shoulders), structured leather jackets highlighted luxe fur collars, and the closing look featured an undeniably slick black asymmetric leather and canvas zippered coat. Trends: Western influence, fringe, parka jackets, crochet detailing.
Colors: Desert sand, gray, black, army green, sienna.
Key Piece: We loved the simple, yet sexy sheer asymmetrical and draped dresses; outerwear showed amazing structural pieces.
Accessories: Wedge platform boots, knee-high boots, leather harness vests, Western-inspired hats, turtle shell necklaces.
Who Would Wear It: Girls who like the utilitarian look with slight, modern edge.

After a string of absurdly silly flicks like Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore, Adam Sandler showed us his softer side in The Wedding Singer. When Robbie's shallow girlfriend leaves him at the altar, the struggling wedding singer meets the bright-eyed and adorable Julia (Drew Barrymore) who is unfortunately engaged to a jerk. Throughout the movie, Robbie and Julia try to make sense of their newfound friendship, but fall in love and get married after Robbie makes the ultimate grand gesture on an airplane. This movie may be sweet, but it's also full of funny laugh-out-loud lines. Here are a few of my faves, but be sure to add yours in the comments below!
