Buzz Battle: What Is the Scariest Movie Ever?

We're almost at the end of our long battle to determine the Scariest Movie of All Time. The two movies left standing are definitely among the classics of the horror genre: The Exorcist and The Shining. We've heard some pretty heavy arguments for each side, (particularly from my girl Fab, a horror aficionado who is on team Shining all the way) - and even the Buzz editors stand as a team divided. In today's Buzz battle, we'll give you our arguments on why each movie deserves the ultimate title.

Editor S will support The Shining while Editor B will make a case for The Exorcist. Don't forget to make your own pick after reading our arguments!

Editor S: As someone's who's long been a chicken about watching scary movies, I tend to get freaked out by a horror flick, and then eventually get over it. I have never gotten over The Shining. It's scary because it's more disturbing than anything; it's not a supernatural story like The Exorcist that you can choose not to believe in; cabin fever could realistically happen to someone - someone you know.
Editor B rebuttal: I will admit that I do think The Shining is terrifying, but it didn't haunt me the way The Exorcist does. That face? That voice? The imagery of a girl crabwalking backwards down the stairs is imprinted in my brain! You can't unsee that kinda stuff, though I wish I could. And cabin fever may be real, but The Exorcist left me believing that maybe possession is real too.

Editor S: The Shining has just about every horrific horror film element you can think of: gore, psychological disintegration, cabin fever, possession; but none of them define the movie. It's such a complex, well done film with great acting and directing. While there are a few shocks, some of the scariest moments of the movie are the quietest, like when you gaze down an empty hall, see Jack at his desk, working, or discover what's been typed on Jack's typewriter over and over again with his wife. Because the terror is so simmering and pervasive in the movie, there's no time you can stop stressing out, no calm scenes in between the madness.
Editor B rebuttal: The Exorcist has all the elements that make horror films fun and terrifying at the same time. Monstrous images? Check. Creepy child? Check. Excessive amounts of bodily fluids (hello, green bile)? Check. Not to mention the over-the-top campiness, suspenseful moments, and perhaps the scariest theme music of all time. Oh, and levitation. Talk about being stressed out - just when you think there's a safe moment, a vision of the devil flashes across the scene, trying to brainwash us all.
Editor S closing argument: With most scary movies, you can become desensitized to a gory murder scene, tell yourself it's just a movie, but that doesn't work with The Shining. It stays with you more; even as great an actor as Jack Nicholson is, I'll never not see him wielding an axe at his terrified wife. And I'm also irrationally scared of empty hotels.
Editor B: The Exorcist is the kind of movie that you can watch at 10:30 in the morning, surrounded by friends and family, and still be scared to your core. (Ever had a daymare? This is the fast track to get you there). Jack Nicholson went on to find fame with other films, but nobody could ever look at Linda Blair again without envisioning her head turning all the way around.

Buzz In: What Is the Scariest Movie You've Ever Seen?

'Tis the season (and now the day!) to be scared out of your mind! While some people might be headed out to party the night away, many folks will get together to watch terrifying movies tonight. Of course, what scares people in movies varies from person to person. The suspense of a movie like Psycho turns some into a ball of nerves. For others, the idea of being possessed by a demonic spirit, as in the classic scary movie The Exorcist, will do the trick.

Personally, I still feel a chill down my spine when I think of the creepy, snowed-in hotel in Stephen King's The Shining and I'd prefer to not even talk about 28 Days Later because it was too traumatizing. Now it's your turn: What is hands-down the scariest movie you've ever seen?

The Exorcist: Now With Bunnies!

I could never sit through this movie in its entirety- once the head started spinning, I was outta there! But when it's done in 30 seconds and squeaky-voiced cartoon bunnies replace all the actors, I'm down to watch. Killer Joe Trailer: Matthew McConaughey Is a Hit Man For Hire

I'm so used to seeing Matthew McConaughey in romantic comedy mode, so it's a bit disconcerting to see him as a cold-blooded killer as the titular character in the trailer for Killer Joe. Emile Hirsch plays Chris, a man so desperate for money that he decides to have his mother (Gina Gershon) killed so he can collect the insurance money. He calls on hit man Joe, but since he doesn't have the cash for the deposit, he uses his sister (Juno Temple) as collateral. As you can tell from Hirsch's bloody face, the arrangement doesn't play out super smoothly, and it's not just Chris's mom who's in danger.

Though the movie is billed as a black comedy, there aren't too many jokes in the preview, but there is as much violence as you'd expect for a movie about a contract killer. I'm assuming the film itself will be pretty graphic, since it recently earned an NC-17 rating (and it's from William Friedkin, director of The Exorcist). Killer Joe comes out June 27, and you can see the trailer when you read more.

Robert and Kristen Pose Sexy and Talk "Loving" the Breaking Dawn Birth Scene in EW

The big three from Breaking Dawn posed together for their latest sexy EW cover, which is out just in time for the movie's Friday release. Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner are currently in the homestretch promoting Breaking Dawn Part 1, including at yesterday's UK premiere and during a group interview with Ellen DeGeneres, which airs on tomorrow's show. The trio talked to EW about the highly anticipated honeymoon sex and Bella's birth scenes, both of which were apparently more graphic before they were edited down to ensure the film's PG-13 rating. We also debuted exclusive behind the scenes pictures of pregnant Bella, but nothing compares to seeing it on the big screen, even if it's a toned down version. Here are highlights from the magazine:

On the sex scene:
Robert: "There’s a version where it was really intense"
Kristen: "Cinematically, cut all together, it’s awesome. But we didn’t really do that scene."
Robert: "And when we did, they kept telling us to stop."

On the birth scene:
Kristen: "That’s what I’m really disappointed about - and I’ve talked about it with Bill. It was more sympathetic or something when I played the scene with less energy, and it made it easier for him to tell the story. But in the book, Bella is screaming, ‘NOOOOO!’ [Stewart stands and demonstrates.] And I did it like that - crazy and Exorcist-like. I was going for this weird mix of turning into the most feral mother you can imagine and also fighting for my own life. I mean, I was a nutcase. I was an absolute nutcase."
Taylor: "I do still love the birth scene. I know it’s frustrating that some things aren’t in there."
Kristen: "Yeah. I still love it too."

The Roommate

Leighton Meester plays Rebecca, the college roommate from hell, in this thriller. When she moves in with Sara (Minka Kelly), she befriends her a little too overzealously, and her mental state comes into question when Rebecca becomes obsessed with her roomie. Next thing you know, she's trying to steal Sara's boyfriend (Cam Gigandet), then starts terrorizing him and other people in Sara's life. DVD extras include director's commentary track and an alternate opening scene.

The Rite

Anthony Hopkins plays a priest and renowned exorcist in this eerie thriller, which follows the education of a young man, Michael (Colin O'Donoghue) as he trains to become a priest. He joins the seminary to get a college degree, but doesn't believe he has the faith to be a priest until he's called to Rome and tries his hand at an exorcism, under the watchful eye of Hopkins's character. The DVD extras include deleted scenes.

Simon Cowell Talks His "Demented" Relationship With Paula Abdul and Why The X Factor Is a Game Changer

It feels like we've been waiting forever for The X Factor to come to America, but now we're just weeks away from the Sept. 21 premiere. A panel of the show's producers, host, and judges (including Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul) took the stage at the TCA to discuss what's in store for their new singing competition. Simon Cowell was tied up in St. Tropez, but that didn't stop him from answering questions and squabbling with Paula via satellite.

The judges were steadfast in their belief that The X Factor really will be a different show than American Idol. Besides having a younger age minimum (12 years old) and a very heavy mentoring program, the biggest change in my opinion is how much higher the stakes are. The winner will not only get a recording contract but will also walk away with a cool $5 million in cash. To boot, Fox announced today that the winner will also star in his/her own Pepsi commercial to air during the Super Bowl. Not too shabby.
As always, Cowell exuded confidence about the show's ability to perform. He said, "This looks like nothing else you've ever seen before," and when asked about ratings, he said, "You don't enter something for the silver medal" and added "We're going to throw everything at this to try to make it the best show on TV."
Cowell called the show "a game changer" and said they're looking for a new audience than the other singing competitions out there, like Idol and The Voice. He also added that they're hoping to introduce us to a completely new kind of contestant, thanks to different rules. "You've got to accept the fact that there will be competitive shows, and it just means you have to make the show better."
When asked if Cheryl Cole's exit from the show had anything to do with Abdul, Cowell quipped, "If it was a question of not getting along with Paula, then I wouldn't be on the show." He went on to talk about how much he loves having Scherzinger as a judge, calling her "a revelation."

Abdul joked about how happy she was to be reunited with Cowell, saying, "It's nice to be back in a demented relationship. It's like home. We're like an old married couple." To which Cowell replied, "I think it's more like The Exorcist 2."
Abdul also tried to explain the differences between The X Factor and Idol, saying, "This show is completely feeling different. It's grand scale. It's an epic feeling. I've never witnessed so much talent. Not just one winner, there are stars that are going to emerge. The whole phase of the mentoring is going to be extremely intense. Simon is a completely different species on this show. He's turned into a pussycat, it's very sweet."
