Earth Day Movie Night: Environmental Disaster Movies

As I was researching environmental disaster movies it was interesting to see how long this idea has been around that humans could destroy the earth simply by taking its resources for granted. Long before Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth, filmmakers and fiction writers were clearly aware that manmade pollution has a chance of bringing about an apocalyptic scenario here on earth. So, in honor of Earth Day I present a few movies that, in their own over-the-top ways urge audiences to heed the warnings of the day lest we succumb to a future worse than what these films imagined.

The Day After Tomorrow
This is probably the first cautionary global warming tale that springs to most people's minds when you think "environmental disaster." In The Day After Tomorrow the rising temperature of the planet speeds up the disaster effects some real-life scientists predict will happen eventually. The film stars Daniel Quaid as a sexy - wait for it - paleoclimatologist who tries to save his son (Jake Gyllenhaal) and the other survivors stuck in New York after the city is flooded and then frozen over by the rising ocean. The movie is all CGI effects and silly one-liners but the action is heart-pounding and Quaid and Gyllenhaal are easy on the eyes.

read more. Logan's Run Before Star Wars wowed audiences with stellar effects, there was the campy and slightly corny Logan's Run. The film is based on the bestselling science fiction novel of the same name that was written in 1967. The movie takes place in the future (23rd century to be exact) where the earth has basically been destroyed by overpopulation and pollution. A few survivors live in a domed society which would be rather lovely if it weren't for the fact that everyone must die at age 30 (population control). The movie stars Michael York (a.k.a. Basil from Austin Powers) and actually won an Academy Award for visual effects at the time. It's a bit dated, but is still an interesting look at a scary dystopian future.
Soylent Green Similar to Logan's Run, Soylent Green was released in the '70s, but this time takes us to the year 2022. Now that overpopulation and global warming have led to a world where food like fruits, vegetables, and meats are rare, most of the population lives off "soylent green" processed food. Charlton Heston stars in this classic thriller about the potential for corruption when resources are scarce and humankind is desperate.

Lauren Conrad Returns to LA in Time For Valentine's Day

Lauren Conrad had a Starbucks in hand as she landed at LAX last night. She returned home after taking off on a trip last week. The getaway coincided with Lauren's 26th birthday, which we celebrated with a look at LC's cutest Twitter pictures. It's usually a busy time of year for the reality star turned designer since NY Fashion Week kicks off tomorrow, but she won't be showing her Paper Crown line on the runway like she did last year. Instead, she's gearing up for Valentine's Day and shared a fun DIY gift that would be perfect to give to a girlfriend on her website. LC may not be currently attached, but she's been seen out with multiple male friends recently including the good-looking guy she dined out with in LA last month.

Sexism, Stereotypes, and the Super Bowl: Recent Ads That Sexualize Women

Sex sells - especially for Super Bowl ads - and year after year, major companies try to get away with the raciest, steamiest ads possible, often at the expense of women. Cars, food, technology - it doesn't matter what the product is; these ads throw in a hot, skin-baring woman for distraction and buzz. Ahead of the big game tomorrow, let's look back at some of the most scandalous ads in the last few years. And maybe one day we'll see more Super Bowl ads that show women some respect.

Skechers: "Kim Kardashian For Shape-Ups"

Kim teases her trainer by telling him he's "the best she's ever had, but it's not working out," and she prefers her Shape-Up Skechers over him. This 2011 ad is confusing and mismarketed, because it's eye candy for men, yet targeting women. Plus, no woman in her right mind would pass up that smokin' trainer for a pair of sneakers.

Blake Focuses on the Small Screen and Lines Up a Big New Role

Blake Lively was dressed warmly for an afternoon of shooting Gossip Girl yesterday in NYC. She's focusing on the current season of her CW hit, but will soon switch gears to record her next big-screen role. Blake landed a role in Steven Soderbergh's The Side Effects opposite Jude Law. The picture will also feature one of Soderbergh's favorite actors, Channing Tatum. Channing and Steven have already collaborated on two films, Magic Mike and the soon-to-be released Haywire. It will be Blake's latest movie with a famous director, after she spent the Summer working with Oliver Stone on Savages.

It seems Blake's on the East Coast while some of her Gossip Girl buddies are out West for the TCAs. The CW panels take place tomorrow in Pasadena, and we'll be there bringing you news from the 2012 Winter TCA. Her boyfriend Ryan Reynolds isn't too far from her at the moment, as he was seen hanging out with his dog Baxter in Boston just a few days ago.

Quick Tip: Think Before You Snack in the Morning

The next time you reach for that midmorning snack after breakfast, think about it: are you really hungry? If the answer is no, that unneeded morning snack may be the reason why you're not losing weight, according to a new study.

The study, published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, followed 123 overweight women on weight-loss plans and found that the women who ate a snack between breakfast and lunch lost seven percent of their body weight over a year, while those who didn't snack in the morning lost more - 11 percent of their body weight during the same time period.

The women who snacked in the morning, between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., ended up snacking more frequently throughout the entire day. Researchers think that the morning snackers lost less weight because they were eating unneeded calories: reaching for a snack during the short time between breakfast and lunch could be motivated less by hunger and more by mindless eating and could be a sign of less healthy eating habits overall, they said.

Not all morning snacking is bad, especially if you are an early riser, since the amount of hours between your breakfast and lunch - or the fact that you had a light breakfast - may necessitate it. And snacking, in general, is a great tool for weight loss (read three healthy reasons to snack here). But the study shows how mindless eating and other bad eating habits can affect your bottom line when trying to lose weight. Here's a reminder: think before you reach for that handful of pretzels tomorrow morning!

Miranda Kerr and Flynn Have a Model Run-In With Lily Aldridge

It's a model moment! Miranda Kerr and her son Flynn ran into their famous friend Lily Aldridge at JFK airport yesterday. Miranda chatted with her fellow Victoria's Secret model and Lily doted on baby Flynn as they waited for their flights. Miranda and Flynn touched down in LA this morning, just one day before the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show airs. The annual lingerie extravaganza will be on CBS tomorrow night after Miranda, Lily, and the rest of the VS Angels taped the runway event earlier this month. We went behind the scenes with Lily during a fitting and also took a look back at all the sexy VS shows to gear up for the big event.

There have been plenty of lovely ladies on the catwalk over the years, though Miranda insists that she doesn't compare herself to the other women. Miranda told New York magazine in a recent interview, “I can’t feel bad about being who I am, just like the girl next to me can’t feel bad about being who she is. Because a rose can never be a sunflower, and a sunflower can never be a rose.”
