As we come to the close of another year, I've been counting down the best in entertainment from over the past 12 months. But let's not forget that we're also celebrating the end of the decade, so you know what that means - a recap of the top music, movies, and TV from 2000-2009! There have been so many creative, smart, and fun choices to keep me busy that it's hard to decide which ones deserve top honors. So beginning with films, here are my favorites, in no particular order. (If you don't agree - or if you'd like to submit your own top five, 10, or 20 - you can do so in the Buzz Best of the Decade Group)!

Dark Knight, Battlestar Galactica Win at the 2009 Saturn Awards

It's that time of year again! The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films handed out the Saturn Awards last night to honor the best actors, movies, and TV shows in these genres. It's a lot for one awards show to cover, but these awards honored some great entertainment that doesn't always get mainstream attention.

Of course, some blockbusters got recognized, too: The Dark Knight took home lots of awards, including another honor for the late Heath Ledger. Iron Man also did very well, with Robert Downey Jr. nabbing the award for best actor and Jon Favreau for director. I love that even the little vampire movie Let the Right One In scored an award. Battlestar Galactica made a splash in the television categories, winning three awards.

Oscar Worthy Gadgets: The Dark Knight's Cell Phone Capers

One of my favorite films of last year, The Dark Knight unquestionably shines with the performance of Heath Ledger as the Joker, nominated for Best Supporting Actor. The film's up for a slew of other nominations that I'm really interested in because of their technical slants, like Best Cinematography, Film Editing, Sound, Sound Editing, and Visual Effects.

That's not just why the Batman sequel was a geek's dream; it featured the Nokia Tube as Lucius Fox's cell, and a couple pivotal scenes centered around cell phone communication as a plot device.

A cell phone being inside one of the thugs was particularity gruesome, while the scene with Rachel Dawes' and Harvey Dent's last cell conversation was heartbreaking. But not even their intensity can beat the staggering image of the city's 3D view of the cell phone network that would finally lead Bruce Wayne to his mark.

Announcing The Winners: The 2009 Critics' Choice Awards

Slumdog Millionaire was the big winner Thursday at the Critics' Choice Awards, taking home the trophy for Best Picture as well as several other awards. The film won five awards in all, including trophies for its director, star, and composer.

Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep tied in the Best Actress category, with Hathaway winning for Rachel Getting Married and Streep for Doubt. On the men's side, Sean Penn won Best Actor for Milk.

Will The Dark Knight Sweep the Awards It's Nominated For?

Christian Bale and Aaron Eckhart proudly showed off their trophies after The Dark Knight took home five out of five People's Choice Awards last night, including Best Movie of the Year. The film will be up for more honors tonight at the Critics' Choice Awards and again on Sunday at the Golden Globes. We'll have to wait a few more weeks to hear about Oscar nods, but tell us - do you think The Dark Knight will sweep the awards it's nominated for?

Announcing the Winners: The People's Choice Awards

The Dark Knight's crazy box office success translated into a whole bundle of People's Choice Awards on Wednesday night. The film took home the trophies for Favorite Movie, Favorite Action Movie, and Favorite Cast, and Christian Bale also won Favorite Superhero and part of the Favorite On-Screen Matchup award (shared with the late Heath Ledger).

Carrie Underwood was another big winner of the night, taking home three awards - including the Favorite Star Under 35 trophy. She also won the awards for Favorite Female Singer and Favorite Country Song.

Biggest Headlines of '08: The Dark Knight's Insane Success

This month, as part of my Best of 2008 coverage, I'm going to look back at some of the entertainment world's big headlines. The first one on my list was the writers' strike. Today I'm going back to the year's biggest hit movie: The Dark Knight.

The release of The Dark Knight was pretty much all people could talk about for months in the film world. It seemed like every week there was another image or clip or new trailer for this thing. I wondered at the time if the movie could live up to all the excitement - and all the positive early buzz. To my surprise, it exceeded all expectations.

The Dark Knight is one of the greatest rarities in Hollywood: Critically adored and fully embraced by audiences. So fully embraced, in fact, it broke all sorts of records at the box office. It's the full package - earning not only an outrageous amount of money, but plenty of award buzz for everyone from composer Hans Zimmer (whose musical creations still make my pulse race whenever I hear them), to director Christopher Nolan, to the actors, particularly Heath Ledger for his disturbing depiction of the Joker. And of course, adding an even deeper level of drama to the whole production was Ledger's untimely death months before the release of the film. His final major performance was of the dark, sinister Joker, which is all the eerier when thinking of the tragic ending of Ledger's young life. His death lends a poignancy to both the role itself and the fact that Ledger received overwhelming praise for this performance - accolades he'll never hear.

The movie as a whole is magnificently entertaining, proved insanely lucrative for the studio, and had real-life drama attached to it - all of which makes The Dark Knight one of the most powerful pieces of pop culture this year.

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. In addition to my picks below, you can also bring home the complete series of The Wire (one of my must haves for the month) as well as Deadwood in its entirety.

The Dark Knight
Oh my gosh, I kind of can't believe this movie is finally out on DVD and available to watch whenever I feel like it. Having loved it on the big screen (especially for Heath Ledger's mesmerizing - and bittersweet - performance), I definitely want to own The Dark Knight for myself.

As you'd expect, the special features are, as the kids say, off the hook. Among other things, they include a look at how director Christopher Nolan and his team developed the new Bat-Suit and the Bat-pod, and a chat with composer Hans Zimmer on musically characterizing the Joker's reign of chaos.

read more. Horton Hears a Who I almost forgot about what a box office success the adorable animated family flick Horton Hears a Who was at the start of the year. I really loved this movie, and I actually think it's a worthy adaptation of the classic Dr. Seuss story. Part of what makes it so cute are the actors voicing the characters, including Jim Carrey as Horton the elephant, Steve Carell as the Mayor of Whoville, and Seth Rogen as Horton's dopey sidekick, Morton. Special features include commentary by directors Jimmy Hayward and Steve Martino, an all-new Ice Age Short: Surviving Sid, deleted footage, and animation screen tests. Lost: Season Four OK you lollygaggers, the fifth season of Lost doesn't start until next year (a.k.a. January, I still love that joke) so you've got time to catch up on the series if you fell behind in '08. The fourth season of the hit series was, in my humble opinion, an improvement over the third. Special features include one of the funniest featurette titles I've read in awhile, "The Right to Bear Arms - Check out the guns of Lost, and find out what it's like working with so much firepower." Additionally, there is one called "The Oceanic Six: A Conspiracy of Lies," which is described as a "controversial underground documentary questioning the survivors of Oceanic 815."
