Tobey Maguire Set for Drama About Landmark Civil Rights Case

Spider-Man 3 is in the news this week as The Dark Knight surpasses its record-breaking opening weekend but that doesn't mean the star of the superhero franchise is slowing down. Tobey Maguire is set to star in a drama titled The Crusaders about the historic Brown v. Board of Education case. According to Variety:

Maguire would play Jack Greenberg, who, as an idealistic lawyer fresh out of law school, joined with NAACP Legal Defense Fund head and future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall to win a Supreme Court case that ruled segregation in American schools illegal.

Besides Maguire, there's some interesting behind-the-scenes talent involved as well. Gary Ross, who's worked with Maguire before on Pleasantville and Seabiscuit will direct and the writer of the recent HBO film Recount, Jay Roach, is working on the movie's script. It's been a while since I've seen a powerful, well-done drama about the civil rights movement and I'll be curious to watch this project unfold.

Get ready for hottie overload as The Avengers comes out this weekend, starring the steamy Chris Evans as Captain America as well as Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and a bulked-up Chris Hemsworth as Thor. I'm all for the super heroines, but in this flick sign me up for the damsel in distress role! Emily VanCamp and her boyfriend Joshua Bowman stepped out in Australia over the weekend. Yesterday, the duo grabbed lunch with friends and checked out a rugby match between the Waratahs and Crusaders at the Sydney Football Stadium. The couple, who are also romantically linked onscreen in ABC's Revenge, are nearing the end of their first season on the hit show with the season finale airing May 23. Emily did press for the series last week with an appearance in Tokyo, where she also watched a sumo wrestler training session with her sister.

Special Events Mark the 40th Anniversary of Boston Marathon's First Women's Race

This year's Boston Marathon is special to us because it marks the 40th anniversary of women officially being allowed to compete. It was 1972 when Nina Kuscsik (bib number F2) became the first official female winner, beating the other seven women who started and finished the race that day. To mark the anniversary, Nina and four members of the pioneering "Class of 1972" will be the starters of this year's Boston Marathon women's race. These five women, along with Bobbi Gibb (the first female to unofficially win the Boston Marathon), will also be honored at the marathon expo and annual Champions' Breakfast the Saturday before the April 16 marathon takes place.

Need another reason to hate Mondays? Tight postweekend waistbands. Unless you spent the past two days living like a monk, the cocktails, movie snacks, and dinners out can all add up to one thing: belly bloat.

“If you wake up bloated on Monday morning, your weekend food choices are likely to blame,” explains Keri Gans, RD, author of The Small Change Diet. “In fact, overindulging for two days straight can easily cause a gain of three pounds. Fortunately, this weight gain is usually temporary and easy to get rid of in less than a week.”

Last week, we shared with you five easy tips to get a flat belly by Friday. Here are four more tips to help you debloat.

1. Hold the Hot Sauce

If you love four-alarm food, lay off the Tabasco, barbecue sauce, and garlic for a few days while debloating. Spicy foods stimulate the release of stomach acid, causing irritation. Give dishes a flavor boost with in-season fresh or dried herbs such as dill, basil, mint, sage, tarragon, and rosemary. You can also use curry powder or lemon or lime juice - all perfect with fish or chicken. Also, steer clear of black pepper, nutmeg, cloves, chili powder, onions, mustard, horseradish, and acidic foods such as ketchup, tomato sauce, and vinegar.

We may have Valentine's Day on the brain, but February also marks an important time of the year - Black History Month. In honor of Black History Month, let's take a look at some of our favorite geeks, both past and present. Everyone on this list has made vast contributions to furthering tech as we know it.

Dwayne McDuffie - The recently passed McDuffie wrote comic books for both Marvel and DC (including Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, the Fantastic Four and the Justice League of America) before founding his own company, Milestone Media, which helped pioneer the use of multicultural characters as its heroes.
Mark Dean - Nerd alert! Without Dean, there may not have been a PC - he holds three of IBM's original nine PC patents, leading the teams that developed the ISA bus and the first one-gigahertz chip.
Mae Carol Jemison - It doesn't get much geekier than space travel; Jemison was the first black woman to travel in space.
Philip Emeagwali - We can all blame Emeagwali for our Internet addiction. He developed the fastest supercomputer software in the world. His IQ is too high to be measured by conventional standards, and he's won a Gordon Bell Prize, which is like the Nobel Prize for computer science.

In Time

This futuristic flick takes us to a world where time is currency, and once you hit 25, you need your minutes to stay alive. Unfortunately, the rich keep getting richer and the poor, like Will Salas (Justin Timberlake), are fighting for survival. Will becomes a target when he's gifted an eyebrow-raising number of minutes, and sets out on a moral crusade against the elite to help himself and others who are in his situation. Though the idea of the film is promising, the dialogue and convoluted plot don't live up to expectations. DVD extras include deleted scenes and extended scenes.

Steve Martin, Jack Black, and Owen Wilson head up this comedy about three very different men competing for a bird-watching title known as a "big year." Through their scheming and scrambling to outdo each other, they each learn something about friendship and how their obsession with birding is affecting their personal lives and relationships. Though the film has old-fashioned, innocuous comedy, it's also slow and forgettable.
