What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. In addition to the the titles below, you can get to know the presidential candidates a little better with election-edition A&E Biography docs on Obama and McCain.

The Counterfeiters
Winner of this year's Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, The Counterfeiters tells the dramatic true story of Jewish forger Salomon Sorowitsch, who is sent to a concentration camp and becomes part of an assembly of counterfeiters whose work is aiding the Nazis and undermining the Allies' economies. The film centers on Sorowitsch's unthinkable choice between continuing to help the Nazis or face death. You can watch a preview of the movie here.

As is often the case with foreign cinema, the movie had a limited release and I missed it when it came out, so I'm excited to get this one in the mail.

Special features include commentary with director Stefan Ruzowitzky, deleted scenes, a making-of featurette, and interviews with real-life counterfeiter Adolf Burger and actor Karl Markovics.

Nim's Island
Another movie I haven't seen is out on DVD today - yay! As you know, I watch a lot of movies so it's a fun rarity when I get to add something to my queue that I've never seen. Nim's Island is a good one because the trailer looks so adorable. Of course, I'm charmed by young Breslin, I love Jodie Foster, and I believe Gerard Butler is extremely attractive. As far as home-viewing goes, it doesn't get much better than that.

Foster plays successful children's book novelist Alexandra, whose main character, Alex Rover, is the hero to Nim (Breslin), a girl living on her magical Nim's Island with her scientist father (Butler). When her father goes missing, Nim desperately needs Alexandra's (and Alex Rover's - also played by Butler) help in conquering the mysterious island's challenges. Good old-fashioned family fun ensues.

Special features include adventure commentary with Jodie Foster and Abigail Breslin.

Oscar Movie Preview: The Counterfeiters for Best Foreign Film

As part of my coverage of this year's Oscars, I'll be posting the trailers for as many of the Best Documentary and Best Foreign Language Film nominees as I can find. Since it's often harder to see these films in theaters, it's nice to get a taste of them before Oscar night - not to mention that it might help you when you fill out your Oscar ballot.

The third film I've featured from this category is also the third to deal with war in one form or another. Austria's entry, The Counterfeiters, is based on the true story of Salomon Sorowitsch, one of the most skilled counterfeiters of all time. In the last years of World War II, Sorowitsch was captured by the German government and put into a concentration camp, where he and others were forced to make false US dollars, British pounds, and other bills used by Germany's enemies, with the idea that the money would cause the countries' economies to collapse. If the counterfeiters went along with the scam, they were treated better than any prisoner could imagine, with good food and warm beds; if they refused, they faced a certain death in the camp's gas chambers. The choice: Aid the Nazi war effort, or lose their lives.

What Do You Think of Buying Knockoffs?

I just read an adamant argument against buying cheap knockoffs from Daily Finance. Writer Loren Berlin says that it is illegal, supports child labor, and can be hazardous to your health. In fact, Kevin Spreekmeester, the marketing vice president for outdoor clothing retailer Canada Goose, says that the fake jackets sometimes are stuffed with chicken parts. "It's feathers; it's beaks; it's feet. Covered in feces, covered in mildew, covered in bacteria," Spreekmeester says.

Buying counterfeit products might mean that you're not getting quality goods, which may hurt your health. "The wrong UV protection can really damage the eyes. Also, lenses can change the perception of color. You may not properly recognize colors when you're in the car at a stoplight," says Stefano Orsini of the Luxottica Group, which owns Ray-Ban and Oakley.

I have to admit that I bought a pair of counterfeit luxury-brand sunglasses without thinking of the repercussions. However, I use it more as a fashion accessory than as an item to protect my eyes, so I think I might be fine on the health end. Reading about the guy who died from getting an electric shock from a knockoff phone makes me think twice about purchasing a fake good again. What do you think of buying knockoffs?

Knockoff Perfumes Made With Pee, Might Support Terrorism

The headline basically says it all. Good Morning America did an investigation and found that counterfeit perfumes, which often end up being sold in kiosks, on the street, and sometimes even at the mall, can contain disgusting, dangerous substances like urine, antifreeze, and bacteria. And even worse, the proceeds from them often go to organizations that fund terrorism, drug cartels, and child labor. Doesn't smell so nice, right?

The trouble is, it's hard to tell whether the perfume you're buying from a vendor is real or not, and if you pick up a bad batch, you might end up spending more on doctor's bills than you would have on the real thing, plus you don't know where your money is going. Perfume is one of those things that's really personal, but given this information, I'd say try to buy something less expensive, or experiment with nicely priced essential oils, instead of hitting the knockoff stand. Sex and the City Perfume Fakes Flood the Market

Sex and the City isn't just popular with video bootleggers: according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's list of top seizures, it's also the most popular counterfeit perfume, WWD reports. Out of 138 commercial perfume shipments Customs intercepted for counterfeit scents, 52 contained fake SATC fragrances. And in total, the agency seized more than a million bogus bottles of the stuff last year.

Fake perfumes aren't just a problem for the company that makes them legally, either. "In addition to the economic harm," Customs said in its statement, "counterfeit perfumes are also often contaminated with unknown chemicals that can cause serious injury." There's no regulation on this stuff, and tests have found some truly heinous ingredients, from urine to known carcinogens. So when it comes to perfume, you're almost always better off biting the bullet and paying full price at the department store. Carrie wouldn't tolerate a knockoff, and neither should you.
