ABC Picks Up Five Shows for Midseason

The Fall TV season hasn't even started yet, and already, at least one network is looking a few months ahead. ABC, which only has one new scripted show (Life on Mars) on its Fall schedule, has picked up three dramas and two comedies for midseason.

Among them: Rob Thomas's Cupid, his remake of his own 1998 show, which now stars Sarah Paulson and Bobby Cannavale (at right). I've been curious about that project for a while now, so I'm glad it's taken the next step toward becoming a series.

The other dramas:

Castle - Starring Nathan Fillion, the show focuses on a horror novelist who helps the NYPD solve crimes.
The Unusuals - Starring Amber Tamblyn, this one's described as an "ensemble dramedy" set in a police precinct.

Better Off Ted - Jay Harrington stars as a moral man trying to do the right thing in this office-set show.
Single with Parents - This comedy from How I Met Your Mother producer Kristin Newman stars Alyssa Milano as a woman juggling a dysfunctional family.

ABC Entertainment President Steve McPherson hinted to the Hollywood Reporter that some of ABC's other pilots might be getting the go-ahead later on. The network still has Captain Cook's Extraordinary Atlas starring Janel Moloney and Rob Thomas's other pilot, Good Behavior, as well as the Alicia Silverstone/Alia Shawkat comedy Bad Mother's Handbook, as possibilities. When I was a little girl I remember watching all the Disney Princess movies (You know the ones: Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Snow White, Aladdin… there seemed to be an endless supply), and I loved everything about those fairy tale stories-the handsome prince, the white dress, the cake, the pumpkin stagecoach, and the big castle to live happily ever after in-I always pictured my future playing out just like my favorite princesses. Doesn't every girl?

We all know the saying "first comes love, then comes marriage," and when you feel you've found your perfect match, you start to picture yourself eventually settling down. You see the future, you see building a strong and wonderful married life together, and even creating a family. You start imagining fairy tales and castles and Cinderella dresses . . .

But you know what? It's not that simple. I wish it were. There's a lot more to marriage than just the love you feel for one another. The Beatles' might have said, "All you need is love," but real life doesn't work that way. Ever. Marriage requires effort.

Before you start calling up wedding coordinators and venues, before you start looking for a dress and picking out a cake, put away your emotions long enough to ask yourself a few questions.

What makes this person The One?

Out of all the relationships you've been in, what makes this person the one for you? Answering this question is crucial to prevent yourself from entering a marriage for all the wrong reasons. Never pressure yourself with the idea that you may never have another opportunity to get married. There's always time. Your wedding is just one day while your marriage is for a lifetime.

When I met my husband's family for the first time I saw first hand how he treated his sisters. His sisters are 13 and 20 years younger than he is, and when I saw them together, I knew he'd be a great father. Among his other great qualities, that's what sealed the deal for me.

Do you share the same values?

Issues about careers, finances, raising children, discipline, sex, spending, religion, and values are the most important subjects that need to be addressed before you even think about engagement rings. If you can't plan for and effectively discuss these topics with your partner, you won't be able to merge your two lives together with any amount of success. If you don't feel comfortable bringing them up, then you're not ready to say, "I do."

When my husband and I started dating we talked about our personal values and beliefs. We found we shared more in common than either one of us thought. Coming from similar family backgrounds, we found it easy to envision a future together, and another way that made merging our lives together almost effortless.

5 Reasons to Love People's Choice Winner Nathan Fillion

Nathan Fillion may have risen to science fiction fame and glory in the gone-before-its-time show Firefly, it's his role as a crime solving novelist that found him award glory last night at the People's Choice Awards. The prolific Twitterer was selected as Favorite TV Drama Actor by the voting fans.

If you aren't already a devoted Castle, Firefly and Nathan fan in general, here's why you should catch up on our favorite geek.

Upping the nerd appeal, Nathan has voiced characters in Justice League Unlimited, King of the Hill, and the Halo video games.
He's a Game of Thrones fan!
He isn't afraid to show his emotions for science fiction films. In a recent interview, Nathan admitted to crying when watching A.I.
He's a believer in renewable energy. He used his star power to bring awareness to the Arcimoto car, an electric car prototype.
He's Canadian. Nathan exhibits our neighbor to the north's enduring friendliness, love of poutine, and allegiance to family. Aww.

Angelina Hits the Farmers Market With Short-Haired Shiloh, Pax, and Knox!

Angelina Jolie brought her children Shiloh, Pax, and Knox to a farmers market in LA Sunday. There was more fun in store for the little ones besides sampling the produce and chocolate-covered strawberries, though. Knox was able to take a ride on a pony and swings, then inspect a bouncy castle. The gang was also treated to some Italian ices. Shiloh debuted a new short hair cut! Pax, meanwhile, kept himself occupied by trying out some of his martial arts moves.

Angelina spent the afternoon with her kids following a fancy evening out on Saturday. Angelina attended the Producers Guild Awards with Brad Pitt, and she picked up the Stanley Kramer honor for her directorial debut In the Land of Blood and Honey. We caught a moment with both Brad and Angelina on the red carpet prior to the show. When asked about the possiblity of getting behind the camera himself, Brad Pitt said "hell no"!

What's on Your Toddler's "Potty List"?

Every season my kids and I create a "bucket list" of activities we want to do before the weather changes. Right now, given that it's Winter, that list includes everything from building a family of snowmen to learning how to play hockey (never mind that my son doesn't know how to ice-skate yet!). While some moms I know have their own "40 before 40 lists" of the 40 things they want to do before hitting the big 4-0, I never thought about actually creating age-specific lists for my kids.

Across the pond, Cow and Gate, a British baby-food maker, surveyed 1,000 parents to see what they wanted their kids to do before they turned 3. Among the top 10 items were "making a mud pie" and "climbing a big hill." Nowhere on the list were the ultracompetitive milestones often overheard on the playground here in the states. Rather, the parents named timeless experiences we could all desire for our kids.
