What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue.
Army Wives: Season 1
I admitted earlier this month that I'm addicted to the Lifetime series Army Wives when I added it to my must-haves list for June, and when I declared it No. 3 of the top 10 reasons to keep your TV on this Summer. And I'm the first to admit that the show (based on Tanya Biank's memoir Under the Sabers: The Unwritten Code of Army Wives) didn't entice me when I first heard about it. Now, however, I find it to be intelligent, humorous and awfully compelling, given that it centers around the current war.

The second season just premiered last Sunday, so you've got some time to catch up while recording the new episodes.

Special featurettes include titles like: "'Have at It' With the Army Wives" which is a "Q&A Session with the cast of Army Wives featuring questions submitted by fans" and "Wives On the Homefront," including "an inside look at real army wives as they share their fascinating stories and experiences."

read more The Other Boleyn Girl I chose the book The Other Boleyn Girl as my very first selection for the Buzz Book Club, and knowing that the screen adaptation starred Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson as the competing sisters I was curious to see what parts of the novel they kept and what they skipped. All in all, I wasn't totally thrilled with the outcome but still found the filmmakers' choices with the source material interesting. If you missed this one in the theater, now is your chance to check it out. Special features include a featurette on bringing the historical story and novel to life, as well as a featurette on the life of a lady and court etiquette in 16th century England. The Bucket List Look at those guys. That's the happiest DVD cover I've seen in a while. Anyway, The Bucket List had a very successful opening weekend at the box office and opened some peoples' eyes to the potential of a demographic often overlooked by Hollywood. You know, anyone over the age of 35. The story follows two very ill fellas who happen to get placed in the same hospital room and decide together to break out of their hospital gowns and live the life they have left to its fullest. It's probably a good choice for an at-home movie with a multi-generational audience. Special features include the music video for the song John Mayer wrote for the film, "Say."

Box Office: Cloverfield's Monster Weekend Breaks Records

January usually isn't the month to expect big things at the box office, but Cloverfield just changed all of that. JJ Abrams' monster flick was No. 1 at the box office this weekend, earning an estimated $41 million and setting an all-time January record, Variety reports. Katherine Heigl's 27 Dresses came in a respectable No. 2 earning $22.4 million - another great opening for this time of year.

On the other hand, the ladies of Mad Money didn't fare well at all over the weekend, coming in low down the list at No. 7. The Bucket List took the third slot while audiences continued to enjoy the little comedy that could, Juno, which came in No. 4.

Despite this weekend's huge numbers, we might not be done yet: Studios could gross even more today if moviegoers head to the theaters on their day off.

Roger Avary, who won an Oscar for writing Pulp Fiction, has been arrested for vehicular manslaughter after being involved in an alleged drunk-driving accident in Ojai, Calif. early Sunday morning, which killed a passenger and injured Avary's wife. Box Office: Bucket List Narrowly Wins Over First Sunday

By an incredibly small margin (in Hollywood terms, anyway), The Bucket List was No. 1 at the box office over the weekend, just barely beating out First Sunday for the top slot. According to Variety, this is the biggest opening yet for director Rob Reiner. Also, 70% of ticket buyers were over 35 years of age.

Coming in at No. 3 was Juno moving down just one place after actually coming in at No. 2 last weekend. National Treasure: Book of Secrets fell to No. 4 with Alvin and the Chipmunks rounding out the top five.

This upcoming holiday weekend we'll see the girlish romcom 27 Dresses go up against J.J. Abrams' Cloverfield and the bank heist comedy Mad Money.

Jack and Morgan Carry Their Bucket List to LA

Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman came out in LA last night to premiere their new sweetheart buddy film The Bucket List. In the movie, they play men from very different walks of life who are both terminally ill and embark on a series of adventures they've always wanted to do before they "kick the bucket." The boys were joined by friends Billy Crystal, John Mayer (who isn't one to miss a red carpet these days) and their pint-sized costar Taylor Ann Thompson. Oh, and in case anyone is still curious, this movie is the reason why Jack showed off that completely shaved head at last year's Oscars. The Bucket List comes out Christmas day and looks like it might be a perfectly (and possibly overly) saccharine holiday treat.

Savvy Tip: Create a Yearly Bucket List

Bucket lists are a great way to set goals and daydream about grand plans, but it's easy to feel overwhelmed by everything you hope to see and accomplish in your lifetime. To make your bucket list more manageable, divide it into parts and give it a yearly spin: "12 Things to Do in 2012." Choose one item to tackle each month and be realistic with your picks, setting aside the loftier ideas for a separate "someday" list.

Committing to just one item a month is reasonable enough, and when one fresh experience leaves you reenergized, you'll feel inspired to continue with the rest of your list. Not sure where to start? Here are 10 fun and doable bucket list ideas:

Go to a museum in your city that you've never visited.
Volunteer for a cause that means something to you.
Visit a restaurant or attempt an intimidating recipe you'd usually avoid.
Go all out and host the dinner party or birthday bash you've always imagined.
Run a challenging race that requires regular training.
Save $100 a week for four weeks and put the money toward a dream vacation.

What's on Your Toddler's "Potty List"?

Every season my kids and I create a "bucket list" of activities we want to do before the weather changes. Right now, given that it's Winter, that list includes everything from building a family of snowmen to learning how to play hockey (never mind that my son doesn't know how to ice-skate yet!). While some moms I know have their own "40 before 40 lists" of the 40 things they want to do before hitting the big 4-0, I never thought about actually creating age-specific lists for my kids.

Across the pond, Cow and Gate, a British baby-food maker, surveyed 1,000 parents to see what they wanted their kids to do before they turned 3. Among the top 10 items were "making a mud pie" and "climbing a big hill." Nowhere on the list were the ultracompetitive milestones often overheard on the playground here in the states. Rather, the parents named timeless experiences we could all desire for our kids.

Below the line deductions come in two types: one is called the standard deduction, and the second is called itemized deductions.

The Standard Deduction

The standard deduction is an amount of income that the government will not tax any taxpayer on. Most people take the standard deduction on their returns, which is worth anywhere from $5,800 to $11,600, and opt out of the whole process of itemizing. It’s as simple as saying, “I’m a single person (or married filing singly or married filing jointly), and yes, I would like the standard deduction.” For some people, this is just fine. After all, that’s a lot of money, and taking just the standard deduction makes your taxes simpler and faster. What’s not to like?
