Love It or Leave It: "Bang On" by The Breeders

We still have to wait until April 8 for The Breeders' new album Mountain Battles to be released, but we've already gotten a taste of one of the tracks, "We're Gonna Rise." Now there's another song from the album online, "Bang On," and it's worth checking out.

Totally pared down to a steady drumbeat and sparse lyrics, it's not a super complex track, but it's enjoyable nonetheless.

I have to admit, though, I might be missing the good old "Cannonball" days.

Coachella Music Fest Lineup: Hipsters, Start Your Engines!

While the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival has become a giant, crowded experience that has gone increasingly Hollywood over the years, the festival still continues to book some pretty excellent bands. At first glance, this year's lineup, announced Monday at a press conference in Mexico City, has some folks feeling underwhelmed. Still, there's enough good stuff planned for the three days of fun in the Southern California desert that music fans like myself will still want to get busy mapping out the bands they want to see from April 25 to 27.

The big news this year is a performance by Roger Waters of Pink Floyd, who will re-create Dark Side of the Moon, as well as a Portishead reunion, according to the LA Times. The festival organizers also confirmed what had been rumored for months: They're bringing a Coachella-style music festival to the East Coast. On Aug. 8 to 10, the first All Points West Music & Arts Festival will take place at Liberty State Park in New Jersey. This might be a good option for the not-so-outdoorsy music lover, because it won't have camping a la Cochella.

Tickets for Coachella will go on sale at 10 a.m. this Friday, Jan. 26. Three-day passes are $269 plus taxes and fees, and single-day tickets are $90 each. More info is available here.

It's pretty hard to top the earth-shattering Rage Against the Machine reunion from last year; however, there are some pretty cool recently united bands performing this year, including the Verve and the Breeders. I'd love to see Death Cab for Cutie, My Morning Jacket, M.I.A., Fat Boy Slim, and Rilo Kiley. I'm also really curious about how bands like Vampire Weekend sound live.

The Breeders Are Back: "We're Gonna Rise"

It's been 14 years since The Breeders released Last Splash, one of the seminal albums of my youth, and more than 15 years since The Pixies first disbanded. But bassist and belter Kim Deal remains one of the coolest chicks in rock. Her intoxicating warble on "Do You Love Me Now?" and the emphatic enthusiasm of the classic "Cannonball" still get me right in the gut - a fact I was reminded of this week, with the release of a brand-new Breeders song.

Appropriately titled "We're Gonna Rise" and now playing on the band's MySpace Page, the song will appear on the Breeders' first CD since 2002. It's called Mountain Battles and will hit stores in April 2008. So far, I like what I'm hearing: The toned-down track is true to form, with lazily romantic vocals and a slow-grinding core. The cost of raising a dog is extremely high. In fact, if you look at rates to fly with your dog on airplanes, it's sometimes almost equivalent to what we humans are paying for a plane ticket. And it all adds up - you end up spending a never-ending amount of cash on toys, crates, flea medication, checkups, and the list goes on. However, many think the high costs of raising a dog are totally worth it. To reduce the costs of what you think is a necessary expense, here are some tips on saving money on your new dog:

Adopt a Doggie: If you're not too picky about the breeds, getting your dog from a shelter is cheaper than spending over a thousand for a purebred puppy from a breeder. Further, many of the pets have already been vaccinated and spayed or neutered, which will definitely save you money in vet bills.
Pick a Responsible Breeder: If you have your heart set on a pooch from a breeder, make sure you do your homework lest you end up with a sick dog from a puppy mill. Do research online to see what qualities a responsible breeder has, and go take a look at the dog and inspect the environment it's being raised in. Ask for references from sources like the breeder's vet, ask to see the dog's parents (if they are around) and quiz her on how she raises her dogs. Here are more questions to ask a prospective breeder.
Costco For Pets or Buy Online: Check to see if there is a warehouse superstore for pet supplies in your area. For example, Pet Club in the Bay Area gives great discounts if you buy in bulk - great for buying items in bulk such as urine pads, cleaning solvent, and poop bags. Another option is to see if you can find better deals online - Four Paws wee wee pads are available on Amazon at a 55 percent discount, so be sure to look around online for great bargains.
Neuter or Spay at the ASPCA: Spaying or neutering your dog can be extremely pricey. Check out your local ASPCA for cheaper prices on the surgery. To compare prices, I called a local vet that quoted me a hefty $800 for a small breed puppy, while the ASPCA in San Francisco quoted me $225. However, after asking around, my friend told me about an even better deal at another ASPCA, located a little further away in Oakland, CA, which charged $100 to spay/neuter. Be sure to check out the prices of the different clinics, even if they are under the same organization. The local Humane Society clinics were even cheaper so you might want to check out their prices as well. Lesson to learn: always shop around for pet health services.
Housebreak Your Dog: If you train your dog to "go" outside of your house, you don't have to waste money buying expensive pee pads and you'll be using less cleaning solvent for the messes that accidentally spill from the pad to the floor.

Happy Easter! What better way to celebrate this bunny-centric holiday than with this ball of cuteness? This little gal is a dwarf breed of rabbit known as "teddywzerg" in German, according to her owner, but she's very similar to a dwarf lionhead bunny. Lionhead rabbits are such a new breed, they're not even recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders' Association. But something tells me this might be their year!
