Playlist: The Summer Road Trip

We're smack-dab in the middle of Summer, and to me, there are few more quintessential Summer vacations than a good old-fashioned road trip. Of course, any good road trip needs a great Playlist, and there is no shortage of songs that pay tribute to motorized wanderlust.

In fact, when I made my trip cross-country several years ago, I asked all of my friends to burn mix CDs so I would have plenty to listen to en route. Of course, that was before these newfangled iPod Playlists, but I've used those original CDs as inspiration for my summer road trip iMix. Song of the Day: My Morning Jacket Covers the Band, "It Makes No Difference"

A while back I posted a Death Cab for Cutie track from the new Band tribute album, Endless Highway. But Death Cab could learn a thing or two about Band covers from Kentucky rockers My Morning Jacket, who contributed their interpretation of "It Makes No Difference" to the compilation.

It's fitting that MMJ should cover the perpetually touring Band, since My Morning Jacket is also incredible live, with its shows approximating a head-banging, guitar-shredding circus. On this song, MMJ frontman Jim James lends his usual reverb-drenched singing style to beautiful Band-inspired vocal harmonies, while rock-heavy guitars and snare rolls play off a more traditional lazy organ. Song of the Day: Death Cab for Cutie, "Rockin' Chair"

Tribute albums can be hit or miss, but the forthcoming Endless Highway: The Music of the Band sounds pretty promising. Due Jan. 30, the disc has My Morning Jacket doing "It Makes No Difference," a rendition of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" by the Allman Brothers, and this cover of "Rockin' Chair" by Death Cab for Cutie. It well preserves the integrity of the song, but Ben Gibbard's voice with the commanding piano adds a more sensitive-dude vibe to the tune. The Oscars air on Sunday, Feb 26, and any movie lover already has the date penciled in. In case your plans are even grander than simply watching the show and you want to throw a viewing party for friends, then why not pick a theme based around one of the best picture nominees? I'm suggesting The Artist as inspiration, the delightful silent film that's been creating a deafening award season buzz. Here's how to pull it off.

How to decorate: All your decorations should be black and white, with art deco accents. Play The Artist movie soundtrack or big band music while guests are arriving. And if you know anyone who owns a Jack Russell Terrier, borrow him and pretend he's Uggie.
How to dress: In glam 1920s Old Hollywood garb. Think tuxes for men, and flapper dresses or diaphanous gowns and long pearls for women.
What to serve: Lots of champagne, of course, along with Manhattans and Sidecars, cocktails popular in the '20s.
How to act: Ask everyone to be as silent as possible, but expressive with their face and hands. It sounds crazy, but at least you won't have to shush anyone when the show starts.

I don't usually get very fancy with my yoga clothes. A fitted tank with a built-in sports bra is my usual go-to top. It keeps my girls covered and in place, and the fitted body stays put when I go upside down. But some days ~~you ate too many cookies~~ you just don't feel like wearing something tight. You could sport a loose shirt but it doesn't offer the most flattering look, and as soon as you start moving, it can end up exposing your belly even more than a tight tank. Flawless Valentine's Day Makeup Looks in 5, 20, or 45 Minutes

Valentine's Day is the perfect time to experiment with bolder, brighter makeup looks. But the problem is not always a matter of what kinds of palettes and color combinations to try: it's a matter of how much time there is to actually get it all on. According to celebrity makeup artist Emily Kate Warren (who has worked with stars such as Jennifer Jason Leigh and Abigail Breslin), a quick, flattering makeup look shouldn't take longer than five minutes. So whether you have hot date-night plans or you're heading out on the town with your friends this Valentine's Day, start those stopwatches. Here are Warren's suggestions for getting an easy-peasy five-minute look, along with tips on creating 20- and 45-minute palettes.

To get a speedy, five-minute look . . .
Warren recommends applying a black mascara, a red lip stain (or a matte lipstick tapped on with the fingertips), and a bright, pink-toned blush.

And if you have 20 minutes . . .
Warren suggests applying full foundation, all of the products listed above in the five-minute palette, and highlighter on the cheekbones. You can also try adding a haze of bronze around the lash lines for a warm and glowy finishing touch.

And if you have 45 minutes . . .
Apply all of the above, plus half-lash strips, along with a black liner on top to conceal the lash bands. And for that extra pop of color? "A full-on red lip could work, as well."
