TV Tonight: The Secret Life of the American Teenager Returns

The Secret Life of the American Teenager is one of those shows I just can't quit. Sure, the show's made me roll my eyes plenty of times over its two seasons, and it still hasn't lived up to Greek in my personal ABC Family series power rankings, but it's also succeeded in sucking me in completely to the world of Amy, Ricky, Ben, and the rest.

And now, with the show's third season premiering tonight, I'm even more curious to tune in than usual. When it started, Secret Life was about a teenager trying to deal with the complications of an unexpected pregnancy and her tortuous decision about what to do next. Now, though, it's about a teen mother with a new infant to care for, a continuing battle between her son's father and her boyfriend, and a bunch of new issues with her own mom that should create some drama in the weeks to come. How will things be different for the show now that there's a baby around?

I can't think of many shows that have followed a teen pregnancy and then stuck around to show us what it's like after the baby's born. Is that a story you're interested in seeing - and will the show's relatively huge audience come back to watch it? Do you wish they'd kept Amy pregnant for a while longer? Or do you just tune in to check up on what Molly Ringwald's doing these days?

Buzz In: What Teen Show Best Captures Your Own Experience?

The New York Times recently ran a story comparing the portrayals of teenage life in Gossip Girl, The Secret Life of the American Teenager, and the British show Skins. As I read through the reporter's description of each show, I wondered which teens, if any, see themselves represented in these three seriously different shows. Though they're fun to watch, none of these three shows quite captures my own teen years.

For example, the Times describes Secret Life as "steeped in moralizing" (my teen years weren't as pious), Gossip Girl as a place "where jetting to Aspen from Teterboro" is normal (yeah, not my experience either), and Skins as "nihilistic in its mood" (my hormones were raging, but I wouldn't say I was a nihilist).

So what teen drama did come closest to my own youth? Strange to admit it, but Saved by the Bell comes pretty close (sometimes I related to Jessie Spano. There, I said it. Except during this scene). Or maybe My So-Called Life (because of this scene, I did my fair share of bed dancing) - but even that still isn't quite right. What about you? What teen show - past or present - best sums up your own teenage years?

ABC Family has ordered 13 more episodes of The Secret Life of the American Teenager, writes the Hollywood Reporter.
According to Variety, Don Cheadle will get to star in and produce a movie he has long wanted to make: a drama based on the memoir Marching Powder: A True Story of Friendship, Cocaine and South America's Strangest Jail.
Will Ferrell and friends will be poking fun at both racism and split personalities in the movie 2-Face, writes the Hollywood Reporter.
The LA Times wonders if the Emmys are out of touch with what viewers are watching.
AdWeek has the story of how the Project Runway legal battle went down in court this week (short story: no decision yet).
A Chinese artist is suing DreamWorks over what he says is an "insulting" depiction of China's national symbol in Kung Fu Panda, Variety reports.
According to Pitchfork, Jarvis Cocker is working on music for The Fantastic Mr. Fox, Wes Anderson's forthcoming film.

First Look: The Secret Life of the American Teenager

ABC Family's The Secret Life of the American Teenager has a clunky title and a premise disconcertingly close to that of Juno. But it also has Molly Ringwald, and for that alone, I want to check the show out when it premieres July 1.

The show is, at face value, the story of Amy (Shailene Woodley, aka the first Kaitlin Cooper of The OC), a band geek who finds herself unexpectedly pregnant. Of course, like any show about high school and/or suburbia, her life isn't the only one full of secrets below the surface - there's also a Christian cheerleader whose decision to wait till marriage is tough on her boyfriend, the bad girl who might just be a covert nerd, and more.

The show comes from the mind and pen of Brenda Hampton, best known for creating 7th Heaven, and Secret Life seems to have a few things in common with that show - notably some over-the-top soapy dialogue and questionable child acting. And yet, it looks sweet and almost comforting, not unlike the Heav at its best.

Twilight Leads the People's Choice Awards Nominations

The 36th annual People's Choice Awards nominees are here, and last year's Twilight is leading the charge! American Idol's Kris Allen was among the announcers this morning for the nominees, which also include lots of nods for The Proposal - but of course, everyone's favorite bloodsucking love story landed in many categories, including favorite on-screen movie team.

Why didn't they look to 2009's New Moon? Because last year's nominations debuted before the first movie in the Twilight saga.
