Saved By the Bell Is Coming to The N

If you've missed hanging out with Zack, Kelly, Slater, and Screech at The Max, you might want to see if your cable package includes The N. The network just bought the rights to all six seasons of the show, and episodes will start airing in January - hopefully at a more decent hour than those 7 a.m. airings on TBS.

The N - best known (to me, anyway) for showing Degrassi: The Next Generation - has been sharing time with another network, Noggin, for several years, but as of Dec. 31, the two are splitting up. To prepare, the network has snapped up some classic teen shows, including That '70s Show, which will start airing in June.

The network also has some other original shows on the way, including a reality series called Queen Bees that attempts to reform the meanest mean girls. But other than Saved by the Bell, I'm most excited about the return of Degrassi for its seventh season, starting Jan. 18.

What other teen shows would you like to see turn up on The N? Personally, I wish someone would get the rights to Good Morning, Miss Bliss and Hang Time. Oh man, anyone else remember Hang Time?

Get Psyched for "Degrassi"!

Alright, let's talk: Who else besides me is super-excited for tonight's season premiere of "Degrassi: The Next Generation"? The N will show the first of five new episodes tonight, as Craig returns - and brings a little bit of his rock star lifestyle back with him. There's a a pretty cool promo for tonight's episode, "What's It Feel Like to be a Ghost?" But I'm much more intrigued by this teaser for the whole season, which promises in a slightly evil voice that someone will die. Check it out.

Get Ready For More DeGrassi

Apparently, you guys share my love for the juicy teen drama "DeGrassi: The Next Generation." The only problem with the Canadian show, which airs on The N cable network, is figuring out when the new mini seasons begin and end. Well, you're in luck, because I've got the scoop on the new episodes!

On Jan. 5 at 8:30 p.m., The N will air the first of five new DeGrassi episodes, which will see the cast welcoming a rock star and bidding farewell to a popular character. According to The N:

New episodes of "Degrassi: The Next Generation" will include a guest appearance by famed rock band Taking Back Sunday, who play themselves in an upcoming episode premiering Friday, January 12. Bad boy Craig joins the band for a one night only gig but for this recent high school grad who has taken to “partying like a rock star,” he’ll find that his new drug habit may soon get in the way of his dream career and dream girl. Finally, Degrassi fans are in for the shock of their lives on Friday, January 26 as they prepare to say good bye to one of their most beloved characters when tragedy ensues on campus.

DeGrassi Gets Syndicated

I have a confession to make: I love "Degrassi: The Next Generation." Whenever I happen to catch this Canadian teen drama on The N cable network-ok, so sometimes I TiVo it-I can't help but watch. Seriously, what more could you want in a guilty TV pleasure? Teen pregnancy? Check. Drugs? Check. Eating disorders? Check. Slow-motion scenes that freeze-frame on teen actors looking deeply conflicted? Check.

So imagine my delight when I read that Degrassi will soon be syndicated in the states. Basically, that means that even TV viewers who don't have digital cable and The N can now watch "Degrassi," since the deal will bring the show to at least 60 percent of U.S. households. The show will start airing next Fall, just in time for back to school.

Ellen Page and Alia Shawkat Score HBO TV Show

Don't say you don't make friends on the derby rink. Ellen Page and Alia Shawkat, recent costars in Whip It, have scored a deal to write and produce a TV show for HBO. Another costar from the movie, Sean Tillman (AKA Har Mar Superstar, pictured here), is also collaborating.

The show, called Stitch 'N Bitch, will be about "two painfully cool hipster girls as they relocate from Brooklyn's Williamsburg neighborhood to Los Angeles' Silver Lake enclave in hopes of becoming artists." It sounds obvious who these characters will be based on - both women fit that 'painfully hip' description, but there isn't a confirmation yet that they'll be starring. I'd love to see them in the roles, but also hoping this isn't one of those projects that will cause scheduling conflicts for the Arrested Development movie!

It's Official: Steven Tyler Is Out of Aerosmith

Joe Perry has taken to his Twitter account to break the news that Aerosmith is looking for a new lead singer. Steven Tyler has apparently dropped out amid rumors that he's looking for a solo career - which the front man alluded to himself in an interview earlier this year. Perry assured fans that the band is not breaking up tweeting, "You just can't take 40 years of expiriance and throwitinthebin!"

I'm sure I echo most people's sentiments when I say this is a sad day in rock 'n' roll. I feel like the group should call it quits, because I can't imagine anyone replacing Tyler's swagger. Joe Perry has done solo projects before, but when it comes to Aerosmith, he and Tyler have always been a package deal in my mind. Although, perhaps I'm being too pessimistic - after all, Van Halen did go on to have a successful run when Sammy Hagar took over for David Lee Roth.

90210 vs. Melrose Place: Which Was More Scandalous?

This week's CW drama block may have its share of cool guest stars like N.E.R.D. and Samantha Ronson, but, on the whole, it's a total mess. On the one hand, you've got the unstable girls of 90210 having emotional breakdowns at the drop of a hat; on the other, the Melrose Place residents are busy sneaking around to cover up their crimes. Personally, I was a bit annoyed by all the over-the-topness - especially you, Annie. Oh, and you, Ivy. But hey, at least it gives us a few surprising moments.

Ready to dissect each show and decide which packed more punch? (Warning: major spoilers!) Take a peek at my arguments and then weigh in with your own when you read more.

90210 point: Sasha is officially a nut job. First she tells Dixon that she's pregnant, but when Debbie gets wind of it, she questions Sasha even further to catch her in her baby lies. But the best part? When Debbie says the line, "It starts with you're not pregnant, and it ends with stay away from my son." Oh, snap! Congrats Debbie, you just went up a notch on the list of cool TV moms. Sasha backs off, telling Dixon she had a "miscarriage."
Melrose Place counterpoint: Did David kill Sydney? They sure try to make it seem that way. David tells Ella that he was blackout drunk that night after finding out that Syd was sleeping with his father - and then he has a flashback where he wakes up with blood all over himself and a knife in his hand. I gasped a little over the big reveal, but I'm not entirely convinced that David wasn't set up by someone else.

90210 point: Annie is getting in way over her head with Jasper, and unfortunately, she seems much too insecure to dig herself out. When Navid hears that Jasper is a dealer, he tells Annie and she confronts Jasper about it. Jasper wigs out, making Annie cry and beg forgiveness. Later, we see Jasper selling drugs to someone, so we know the rumors are true. For more on his buyer, keep reading.
Melrose Place counterpoint: Jonah makes out with Kendra, the hot movie producer, literally within the first five minutes of the episode. (That didn't take long.) He stops things from going further, but when he comes clean to Riley, he gets on her case again for her kiss with Auggie. She apologizes profusely, but the damage has already been done. By the end of the episode, I was thinking, Wait, did they actually just break up?! I don't think so, but if you stuck around for next week's promo, things do not look good for the engaged couple.

90210 point: Jen is back, throwing around her prima donna wicked attitude. She walks in on Ryan during his date with the bartender from the previous episode and goes into attack mode with the verbal jabs. ("You look older closer up.") Ryan is actually turned on by her jealousy, and the two become exclusive. But what I can't understand is why, after he knows that she lies, does he actually trust her story about Liam coming on to her? He totally buys it!
Melrose Place counterpoint: Auggie finally gives his a-hole boss Marcello a piece of his mind, er, fists. Marcello passes off one of Auggie's recipes as his own, and then he makes a few lewd comments about Riley - and you know how Auggie feels about Riley. He starts swinging, knocking Marcello out. Back at the apartment later, Violet shows up, and in a moment of what I can only blame on Auggie's emotional distress, the two finally knock boots. I'm guessing this means we'll be seeing Violet's worst kind of crazy very soon (right before she and Auggie say sayonara).

90210 point: Adrianna is inching closer to her previous life of drug use. It starts when she plays a song asking for Navid's forgiveness. (So cheesy!) He turns her down, so she continues sulking in bed, sobbing. Silver and Naomi want her to go to a meeting so she can stay clean, and with due concern - at the end of the episode, we see her buying from none other than Jasper.
Melrose Place counterpoint: Ella's squeaky-clean client, Jessie, is hospitalized with major cocaine in his system, so she begs Lauren to write a fake report citing an allergy as the cause of his stay. Lauren refuses. (Anyone else confused about why Lauren continues to take the high road, despite her side prostitution gig?) Ella then discovers a wad of cash in Lauren's room and realizes her Pretty Woman secret. Of course Lauren denies the accusations, but no matter - Ella decides to let her star take the fall anyway and promises to never question Lauren again.

90210 had way more melodramatic outbursts, but those ladies were so crazy that it kind of turned me off. (You girls give women a bad name. Even Violet seemed normal this week compared to you.) So I'm giving this week to Melrose by default: I was genuinely shocked at David's bloody flashback and the fact that Jonah has suddenly broken out of his perfect-fiance persona. I expect scandal from someone like Auggie or Ella, but from Jonah? Come on!

Motherhood: A Harried-Mom Tale That Often Feels Tired

When you have a parenting movie set in New York, you should know better than to expect a warm-'n'-fuzzy story about the joys of having kids. In fact, Motherhood is out to prove that mothers have it rough.

The film follows Eliza Welsh (Uma Thurman), a Manhattan writer dealing with a cramped apartment, busy husband, and side-street parking while raising her two kids. A day in her life feels like a really, really long 24 hours. Eliza runs around frantically trying to prepare for her 6-year-old's birthday while composing an essay for a parenting magazine contest and squeezing in a sample sale with her mommy friend Sheila (Minnie Driver). We know that Eliza was once a great writer, but when she had kids, she decided to give up her job to raise her family. Now, she's a shell of her former self in frumpy clothes and messy hair. Simply put, Eliza is dealing with the classic parent conundrum: how do you care for your kids and still retain something for yourself? The answer? It ain't easy.

Eliza doesn't try to feign martyrdom. In fact, she often whines about her plight in a way that screams, "I'm angry, dammit!" And at first, you're angry for her too. (No woman deserves to put up with all that she does.) But as the film goes on, Eliza's bitterness knocks you over the head, and you have to you wonder - is she like this every day? Yeesh.

Luckily we have Eliza's friend Sheila for some needed comic relief. Sheila is the cool single mom to the more neurotic Eliza - she mouths off cheeky one-liners and uses her son's motorized bath toy for her "alone time." Jodie Foster also delivers a hilarious cameo as a celebrity mom swearing at the paparazzi on the playground - aka, herself. Both women keep Eliza's "what-can-go-wrong-will-go-wrong" storyline from wearing too thin.

Mothers will probably identify with either Eliza or Sheila but what about the rest of us? While the actors perform well and the movie provides laughs for those who can relate (read: parents), most of the jokes don't feel fresh, and you've probably seen similar setups on shows like The Middle or In the Motherhood or any of the other dozens of family comedies in recent years. Props to the filmmakers for giving mothers their due, but if you're not one yourself, an hour and a half with Eliza may be enough to make you rush out of the theater and buy birth control.
