Buzz In: Who Should Get Their Own Behind the Music?

There once was a time, long before Real Housewives reruns on Bravo, where you could count on VH1's Behind the Music series to be on the air at just the moment you're too lazy to do laundry or pay bills. Those were the good old days (between 1997 and 2006, to be specific) when you could learn all kinds of things about people like Leif Garrett, Billy Idol, and Red Hot Chili Peppers from the cable channel's rock documentary series.

Well now, the network is bringing the series back, and its first subject will be - yes! - Lil Wayne. Great first pick. This revamp is apparently going to "focus more on contemporary artists than the veteran talent of previous incarnations." Which brings me to my question: Who do you want to see get their very own Behind the Music? I think a Jonas Brothers one would be kind of hilarious (I just imagine the little one saying something like, "I struggled my whole life until I found the music!") and I think Kings of Leon would make a good subject as well.

Madea's Box Office Reign Continues Despite the Jonas Threat

Even when competing with a Jonas Brothers 3-D extravaganza thingy, Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail did not falter during its second weekend in theaters and scored the top spot at the box office again.

Disney's Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience was expected to win the weekend partly because of the extraordinary success of last year's Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour. The Jonas Brothers' movie earned an estimated $12.7 million and is considered a disappointment in comparison to the estimated $29 million that Miley's movie debut earned.

Meanwhile, Variety reports that Slumdog Millionaire "enjoyed the biggest post-Oscar bounce since Titanic at the domestic box office, grossing an estimated $12.2 million as it boldly expanded to 2,943 runs in its 16th sesh."

What to Download: New Music Today

Tuesdays are big in entertainmentville: Not only do all the new DVD releases hit Netflix, but new music also pours into stores. So I take a spin through each week's music releases and pick out some albums and tracks worthy of a download. In addition to my pics below, you can download Jonas Brothers tunes from their upcoming 3D movie experience thingy, too. Here are today's selections:

Let's rock! Sometimes I'm in the mood for some good old-fashioned garage rock, and Black Lips usually fits the bill. The band's fifth album is out and it's full of good stuff. If you're new to the band, start with "Starting Over" and the swinging "Drugs." I'm also liking the slower, psychedelic, slightly depressing "Drop I Hold."

Cover art: I'm always a little wary of covers (why mess with the original?) but when an album of covers is for a good cause and has intriguing tunes, I figure why not give it a chance? I already took a listen to TV On the Radio's cover of David Bowie's "Heroes" from this new album of covers, the proceeds from which go to War Child, a nonprofit that helps children affected by war. I'm also enjoying Estelle's take on Stevie Wonder's "Superstition," The Hold Steady's version of Bruce Springsteen's "Atlantic City," and Franz Ferdinand singing Blondie's "Call Me." The album's just $3.99 at Amazon's mp3 store today.

Jamming: K'naan (born Kanaan Warsame) fled Somalia in 1991 to escape the horrors of a civil war, and it's this experience with conflict that so clearly influences his music and most of the songs on his second album. He's also clearly taken some cues from Bob Marley and Wyclef, which should give you a sense of what he's all about. I'm taking a listen to tracks like "Bang Bang,", which features Maroon 5's Adam Levine singing the chorus, and the hopeful anthem "Wavin' Flag."

2008 Kids' Choice Awards: And the Kids' Choices Are . . .

Big stars! Lots of slime! Silly good times had by all! It can only mean one thing: Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards were back yet again over the weekend, and I have to say, I'm impressed with the turnout. Big stars walked the orange carpet to promote big films, including Harrison Ford and Shia LaBeouf, who showed up to get the kids pumped for the return of Indiana Jones.

However, to this crowd of tweens, no one - not even Harrison - could hold a candle to the superstar bonanza that is Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers. Apparently the screams were off the hook (as the kids say) when those acts took the stage. Oh, and then there was the moment when Heidi Klum was hoisted into the air on a cable and, as Reuters put it, "had to pop balloons with spikes attached to the derriere of her jumpsuit." That's fierce.

As for the actual honorees, Cameron Diaz took home the Wannabe Award for being a role model and raising awareness about environmental issues, which is certainly a step up from her previous Kids' Choice Award for burping. To see who else the kids voted for, just read more.
