What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

"Weeds": Season 2
The super-intense cliffhanger of the "Weeds" second season finale still has me reeling. If you thought the first season of this Showtime comedy was impressive, you ain't seen nothing yet. I'm so glad the show continues to get recognition in the form of Emmy nominations because I think both the writing and the acting on this show are stupendous. I know I'm gushing, but the series is seriously amazing, and this second season is particularly mind-boggling.

Mary Louise Parker is still Nancy Botwin, everyone's favorite pot dealer in the wealthy California suburb of Agrestic - only this season she strikes out with her business partner Conrad who defiantly carves his own path away from his domineering (and drug queen) aunt. Zooey Deschanel makes a guest appearance as the hilariously weird Kat, Andy gets down with his Jewish roots and Shane learns some, ah, important lessons from his uncle. Need I say more? Definitely watch these DVDs before the third season starts up again on August 13. You will not regret it!

The Host
Unfortunately, I never got the chance to see this in the theaters, but based on all the critical praise, I wish I had. In particular, I am awed by this quote from the Time review: "If this madly entertaining movie has a fault, it's that it's too ingenious for the genre it ostensibly inhabits." Wow. The Host is a bona fide monster movie with all the shivery horror-flick trimmings, though it has elements of a traditional dramedy as well (that same Time article called it "sort of a Little Miss Korean Sunshine"). The story follows the Park family who own and operate a snack shop near the Seoul's Han River. When a slithery, mischievous sea mutant makes off with one of the Park girls, Hyun-seo, the family is devastated, but they soon discover she's still alive and resolve to save her.

Zodiac
Zodiac is one of those movies that impressed me when I saw it and then grew more impressive the longer I thought about it. As 2007 continues, it remains one of my favorite films of the year so far. The movie is a psychological thriller about a real-life San Francisco serial killer from the 60s and 70s who called himself the Zodiac. In the still-unsolved case, the Zodiac taunted police and journalists by sending letters and cryptograms to the offices of the San Francisco Chronicle. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey Jr., the film follows the investigators and reporters who became obsessed with this killer-turned-media phenomena. For more on Zodiac check out my review.

Buzz-Worthy Video: Conan O'Brien on Zach Galifianakis's Between Two Ferns

This is pretty much my dream scenario: Conan O'Brien and Zach Galifianakis sitting down, shooting the breeze. You know I'm a fan of Galifianakis and his awkward Between Two Ferns interview series on Funny or Die. (His off-color remarks to Natalie Portman still make me giggle.) For this latest installment, he questions the Tonight Show host and his sidekick, Andy Richter.

In the video, poor O'Brien keeps lobbing jokes, but Galifianakis shoots them down. (Watch for the "cricket riding a tumbleweed" button.) Oh, and in a random cameo, Andy Dick stops by, forcing O'Brien to move to the floor.

Is it too early for a holiday music video? Not when it's one starring a host of comedians like Patton Oswalt, Paul F. Tompkins, Weird Al Yankovic, and Rob Huebel, plus many more. Even Mary Lynn Rajskub pops up for a verse or two!

The song, "Do They Know It's Christmas?", was originally written in the '80s for a group of celeb musicians, but this one is very different, and very tongue-in-cheek. Just take the, um, "special appearance" by Thomas Lennon and Ed Helms.

Taylor Swift pulled double duty for Saturday Night Live this weekend as both the host and musical guest. After her cute musical monologue (where she called out Kanye and Taylor Lautner), Swift did her best Bella Swan in a Twilight spoof and poked fun at celebs like Kate Gosselin and Shakira. When the show was over, Swift did a quick backstage interview with Jason Sudeikis. The jokes didn't end with the show - check out the video below where they recap her favorite moments and show a few bloopers from rehearsal.

Ricky Gervais - Love Him or Leave Him?

Ricky Gervais is trying his hand at yet another workplace-centered TV comedy! The soon-to-be Golden Globes host and scribe behind The Office is lending his talents to PhoneShop, which follows a guy working at a phone store at the mall. Mundane jobs are Gervais's specialty, so it's bound to be hilarious - but for now, it's only set to air in the UK.

I've always taken a liking to Gervais, between The Office, Extras, and the fact that he keeps popping up at various awards shows. I've also seen him perform his stand-up routine live, so I guess I may be a bigger fan than most people.

What's your take on the guy? Are you obsessed with him (and his brand of humor), or is he not your cup of tea?

Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin to Host the Oscars - Together!

Earlier today I was sad to hear that Robert Downey Jr. and Ben Stiller had turned down an offer to host the Oscars together, but the biggest awards show of the year has landed an equally hilarious duo: Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin! The comedians will team up to take over for Hugh Jackman, and I'm already giddy thinking about the high jinks that will ensue. I love that we're getting two well-seasoned vets in the humor department (a la Billy Crystal), and we've already seen how great these guys are together after Steve's guest appearance on 30 Rock last season.

So many questions come to mind: Will there be duets? Dance numbers? (Man, I hope so). Are you excited for dual hosting duties or are you worried that we'll get another harried repeat of the 2008 Emmys?

Are You Getting Tired of Competition Dance Shows?

So You Think You Can Dance is now in full swing, and Dancing With the Stars is nearing its season end, but it looks like there won't be any time of the year when you have to go without a dance competition show. It's just been announced that Kathy Griffin has signed on to host Let's Dance, where stars re-enact famous dance routines from pop culture. While it sounds kind of awesome, I feel overloaded with similar news, since Oxygen has just given its competition reality show Dance Your Ass Off a new season.

I love a good dance show (and good dance movie), but I worry this may be too much of a good thing. Are we in competition dance show overload?
