Now There's a Haunting in Georgia (48 More Hauntings to Go?)

After the success of the Spring thriller The Haunting in Connecticut, there's a sequel in the works, this time taking place in Georgia. So it's, you know, The Haunting in Georgia. The Connecticut version had a surprising box office take: "Connecticut became one of the breakouts of a surprisingly muscular first quarter at the box office, earning $55 million domestically despite no stars and a modest budget." Here's more on the plot:

The original supernatural thriller centered on a family that moves to a new state and begins to experience spooky events at their home. The new pic is expected to follow a somewhat similar path but with a new family in a new state.

The Haunting in Connecticut is certainly a spooky movie (this image, in particular, makes me want to vomit), but I wonder what about the Georgia version will be all that different from the one set in Connecticut. I also hope they're not working their way through all 50 - two states down, 48 to haunt!

Box Office: Fast and Furious Races to the Top

Wowza! The fourth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise debuted this weekend and earned an estimated $72.5 million, easily taking the No. 1 spot at the box office. Variety reports this represents one of the biggest box office surprises of the season and is the biggest April opening ever.

Monsters vs. Aliens continued to do solid business and came in second place with an estimated $33.5 million. The top five was rounded out by The Haunting in Connecticut, Knowing, and I Love You, Man in third, fourth, and fifth place respectively. Finally, a movie I really enjoyed, Adventureland, debuted at No. 6.

Did any of you see Fast and Furious? Did your theater have shaky seats?

Monsters vs. Aliens Wins Big at the Box Office

DreamWorks Animation's Monsters vs. Aliens scored the best opening of the year over the weekend earning an estimated $58.2 million. The movie's success signals to studios that audiences don't seem to mind paying an extra few dollars for movies in 3-D.

Meanwhile, the super scary-looking horror flick The Haunting in Connecticut was No. 2, grossing an estimated $23 million, followed by Knowing. Most of you said you'd be off to see I Love You, Man this weekend and the comedy hung out in the top five at No. 4, followed by Duplicity.

Does "Based on True Events" Make You More Interested in a Scary Movie?

This weekend's release of The Haunting in Connecticut is supposedly based on the story of a real-life family that moved into a home only to find that it was formerly a funeral parlor and is now haunted.

When horror flicks are advertised as fictionalizing "true events," it inevitably sends me to the Internet for some answers. A lot of the time it turns out to be a pretty nebulous claim like in the case of The Strangers, which was marketed as being "inspired by a true story" but that turned out to be only semi-accurate.

So what do you think? In the case of scary movies, is it all the more intriguing when it's supposedly based on a true story?

What Movie Will You See in Theaters This Weekend?

It's kind of a random time of year for movies, and I'm curious to see what audiences are in the mood for. This weekend has lots to offer, including a new animated feature, a horror flick, and some holdovers from previous weekends - including an Oscar winner.

Movie Preview: The Haunting in Connecticut

This movie doesn't open until sometime next year, but someone must have wanted to take advantage of the Halloween spirit by releasing the trailer for it now. The Haunting in Connecticut is a based-on-real-events movie in which a family moves to a spooky old home, only to be haunted by the terrible things that happened there years ago. Turns out, their new home used to be a mortuary.

It does look frightening, though most of this comes from jump-scares and glimpses of things that look like they might be really gross, but you don't know for sure so your mind fills in the blanks with gross things anyway. It's too bad this isn't coming out for a while; I'd be all for making this a Halloween-time must-see.
