Amy Adams Joins Wahlberg and Bale in The Fighter

Now that the filmmakers have finally settled on the two male leads for The Fighter, a lady love has been cast. The endearing Amy Adams will join Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale in the story about a famed Massachusetts boxer. Based on a true story, Wahlberg will play "Irish" Mickey Ward and Bale will play Ward's "trainer-brother" Dick Eklund, and the movie will follow "their early days on the rough streets of Lowell, Mass., through Eklund's battle with drugs and Ward's eventual world championship in London."

Amy Adams will take on the role of Charlene, "a tough, gritty bartender and former college high-jumper from Massachusetts who ends up dating Mickey." After playing so many cheerful, bright-eyed characters (ditzy Leslie Miller in Drop Dead Gorgeous, sweet Ashley in Junebug, optimistic Giselle in Enchanted, carefree Delysia in Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day - and even the innocent Sister James in Doubt), I'm curious to see what Adams' "tough, gritty" character is like. Before this, however, we'll get yet another Adams fix when she appears this August with Meryl Streep in Julie and Julia.

Which Pairing For The Fighter Is the Best?

Over two years ago, there was news that Mark Wahlberg and Matt Damon would star together in The Fighter, a drama about "Boston fighter 'Irish' Mickey Ward [Wahlberg] and how he was helped to the world lightweight championship by half-brother Dicky Eklund" (Damon).

Then, about seven months later, Matt Damon dropped out of the project and Brad Pitt was in talks to take his place in the role of Dicky.

Now Pitt's out of the picture and Christian Bale is joining the cast as Dicky (and the movie will be directed by David O. Russell).

Bale and Wahlberg make a nice-looking duo - but then again, so did Pitt and Wahlberg, and Damon and Wahlberg. Which pairing do you think is the best of these three?

Brad Pitt to Replace Matt Damon in The Fighter

Yup. Pretty much what the title says.
Matt Damon was originally signed on to star opposite Mark Wahlberg in The Fighter, but due to scheduling conflicts, Damon dropped out of the project. Brad Pitt is poised to take Damon's place in the film.

Refresh my memory...
As Variety puts it:

Pitt is in negotiations to play Dicky Eklund, Mickey’s half-brother and a talented fighter who once went the distance with Sugar Ray Leonard in a title fight but then turned to crime and landed in prison. He turned his life around and helped his underperforming brother find the spark for a remarkable run that led to the world title.

So... they're replacing one handsome boxer with another?
Yes! It would be very cool if all three of these actors could be in this movie, but alas, there's only room for two. Still, if Damon has to be replaced with anyone, I'm completely okay with it being Brad Pitt.

Mark Wahlberg and Matt Damon: Fighters, Not Lovers

Pending a rewrite by "House" producer Paul Attanasio, Mark Wahlberg and Matt Damon will probably sign on to star in an upcoming boxing drama called The Fighter. According to Entertainment Weekly, the movie is about "boxer 'Irish' Micky Ward's rise to the lightweight title with the help of half-brother Dicky, a boxer-turned-trainer who rebounded after struggles with drugs and crime." It's no remake of Brokeback Mountain - though I know many of you wish it were; in The Fighter they'll play half-brothers, so the whole romance thing is (hopefully) not going to happen.

The shoot will take place in Massachusetts, which should be nice for both of the Boston-born actors. Check out this NPR interview in which Wahlberg talks about his Boston upbringing. He says he worked hard to lose his Boston accent then had to revert to it for his role in The Departed; I think he did a great job.

I only wish I could say the same for Matt Damon's accent in Good Will Hunting.

Hugh Jackman Is the Real Steel Deal

Hugh Jackman is no stranger to a little heavy metal after spending so much time in Wolverine's claws, but he'll be all man in his next project. Jackman is in talks to star in Real Steel, an upcoming family film from Dreamworks set in the future. The movie follows a father and son duo who work to get a boxer back into fighting shape. Here's the kicker: their fighter is participating in an illegal human vs. robot boxing tournament.

You'd think jacked-up Jackman would play the boxer, but he's actually circling the role of the father. Steven Spielberg will be executive producing the project. This movie sounds like it could be fun, though I have to admit that I prefer my robots to be on the cute side rather than the badass side.
