Playlist: The Summer Road Trip

We're smack-dab in the middle of Summer, and to me, there are few more quintessential Summer vacations than a good old-fashioned road trip. Of course, any good road trip needs a great Playlist, and there is no shortage of songs that pay tribute to motorized wanderlust.

In fact, when I made my trip cross-country several years ago, I asked all of my friends to burn mix CDs so I would have plenty to listen to en route. Of course, that was before these newfangled iPod Playlists, but I've used those original CDs as inspiration for my summer road trip iMix. Song of the Day: My Morning Jacket Covers the Band, "It Makes No Difference"

A while back I posted a Death Cab for Cutie track from the new Band tribute album, Endless Highway. But Death Cab could learn a thing or two about Band covers from Kentucky rockers My Morning Jacket, who contributed their interpretation of "It Makes No Difference" to the compilation.

It's fitting that MMJ should cover the perpetually touring Band, since My Morning Jacket is also incredible live, with its shows approximating a head-banging, guitar-shredding circus. On this song, MMJ frontman Jim James lends his usual reverb-drenched singing style to beautiful Band-inspired vocal harmonies, while rock-heavy guitars and snare rolls play off a more traditional lazy organ. Song of the Day: Death Cab for Cutie, "Rockin' Chair"

Tribute albums can be hit or miss, but the forthcoming Endless Highway: The Music of the Band sounds pretty promising. Due Jan. 30, the disc has My Morning Jacket doing "It Makes No Difference," a rendition of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" by the Allman Brothers, and this cover of "Rockin' Chair" by Death Cab for Cutie. It well preserves the integrity of the song, but Ben Gibbard's voice with the commanding piano adds a more sensitive-dude vibe to the tune. Buzz In: Who Should Get Their Own Rock Band Game Next?

Following in the footsteps of this Fall's release of The Beatles Rock Band, similarly seminal band The Who may also get their own version of the game. Roger Daltrey has been quoted as saying that it's planned for next year, but the news is still unconfirmed by reps for the game. More certain is the fact that you probably won't be able to smash the peripherals when you're done playing.

Honestly, though, the thing I'm most excited about is the road ahead for more acts to get Rock Band games. I'm a fan of The Beatles Rock Band and would love the chance to play another band's catalog. Rock Band has already hit up Metallica, Guitar Hero's already gotten Aerosmith; I think it makes sense to have a Rolling Stones game, or perhaps Led Zeppelin or U2. Maybe they could even use a younger band like Green Day or Pearl Jam? Which band would you like to see get their own Rock Band game?

Buzz-Worthy Video: Beck, Feist, Wilco Performing Together

Guaranteed way to make me drop everything I'm doing and press play: tell me that Beck, Feist, and Wilco are collaborating. It's true; Beck recruited the folk chanteuse, the rock band, and British singer Jamie Lidell to join him to perform a tribute to '60s musician Skip Spence.

Their cover of Spence's song, "Little Hands," was recorded in the famous Sunset Sound Studios in Hollywood in ultrahip black and white. The song is beautiful, but I'm still just beaming to see some of my favorite artists in one room together (including Jeff Tweedy's son Spencer on drums!). And Beck, you're rocking that devil's haircut.

Video of the Day: The Office's Kelly and Erin's Subtle Sexuality Music Video!

As much as I heart The Office, one of my biggest gripes about the show is that there's not nearly enough Kelly Kapoor. If you're in the same boat as me, then I've got a very special Thursday treat for you! In a new string of websiodes, we'll get to follow Subtle Sexuality, the new Dunder Mifflin girl band consisting of Kelly and receptionist Erin.

Their first video, "Male Prima Donna," is not at all subtle, but everything you'd expect from celebrity-lovin' Kelly: gold lamé costumes, fierce dance moves, and a whole lotta auto-tuning. There're even some pretty stellar cameos from Andy and the male prima donna himself (spoiler alert: it's Ryan)! What to Download: New Music Today

T.G.I. Tuesday! I've already sorted through the big DVD releases of the day, but now I have new songs to revive your iPod, Just take a look at these three albums. (And if you want to see your own music reviews featured on Buzz, submit them in the Music Review Group in the community!)

Music mash-up: Seems like everyone is releasing a holiday album lately - remember Bob Dylan's? Now, Tori Amos is trying her hand at the genre with Midwinter Graces. It's a big risk for Amos, who puts her own spin on classic carols. Traditionalists might cry foul when she mashes up "What Child Is This" and "The First Nowell" for "What Child, Nowell" or re-purposes "Silent Night" into a love song, but at least Amos is thinking outside of the box. The quieter songs work best, thanks to Amos's ethereal voice. I recommend "Emmanuel" or "Winter's Carol."

All over the place: Wale references Kanye West in the first track on his big studio debut Attention: Deficit, and the mention is fitting. Wale seems like a Kanye in the making, mixing in sparkly, bragadocious tracks with songs that raise controversial social issues (like "Shades," which tackles racism). He also brings in a long list of collaborators, including Lady Gaga (on the already-released "Chillin'") and Mark Ronson. As a result, the album jumps around like, as the title hints, a kid with ADD. You may recognize Wale from this year's VMAs, and he's undoubtedly one to watch. For now, download "Pretty Girls" and "Diary," which samples from one of my favorite films, Amelie.

A classic formula: Bon Jovi fans really love Bon Jovi, and on the band's newest release, The Circle, the rockers aren't afraid to deliver exactly what their followers want - even if it feels recycled. "Working For the Man" should appeal to those who enjoy pumping their fists along to songs like "Living on a Prayer," and "When We Were Beautiful" almost feels like a U2 copycat. The guys cover the regular themes there - love, leadership, the highway of life, etc. - so there are no big surprises. Still, as far as guilty pleasure Bon Jovi goes, it doesn't disappoint.

It's Official: Steven Tyler Is Out of Aerosmith

Joe Perry has taken to his Twitter account to break the news that Aerosmith is looking for a new lead singer. Steven Tyler has apparently dropped out amid rumors that he's looking for a solo career - which the front man alluded to himself in an interview earlier this year. Perry assured fans that the band is not breaking up tweeting, "You just can't take 40 years of expiriance and throwitinthebin!"

I'm sure I echo most people's sentiments when I say this is a sad day in rock 'n' roll. I feel like the group should call it quits, because I can't imagine anyone replacing Tyler's swagger. Joe Perry has done solo projects before, but when it comes to Aerosmith, he and Tyler have always been a package deal in my mind. Although, perhaps I'm being too pessimistic - after all, Van Halen did go on to have a successful run when Sammy Hagar took over for David Lee Roth.

Twilight Leads the People's Choice Awards Nominations

The 36th annual People's Choice Awards nominees are here, and last year's Twilight is leading the charge! American Idol's Kris Allen was among the announcers this morning for the nominees, which also include lots of nods for The Proposal - but of course, everyone's favorite bloodsucking love story landed in many categories, including favorite on-screen movie team.

Why didn't they look to 2009's New Moon? Because last year's nominations debuted before the first movie in the Twilight saga.
