HBO Documentary Tonight: Helen Thomas, in Her Own Words

Helen Thomas has had the unique experience of covering every president since JFK from the front row of the Beltway press corps. She began the tradition of ending each presidential press conferences with a signature "Thank you, Mr. President." Fittingly, this is the title of a documentary about her career that will premiere on HBO tonight.

Thomas first came to my attention as that feisty lady asking President Bush some seriously tough questions about the war in Iraq. I also fondly remember her participation in the controversial Stephen Colbert bit at the 2006 White House Correspondence dinner in which he jokingly referred to her as "Doubting Thomas."

When I heard HBO and Rory Kennedy (daughter of Bobby Kennedy) were doing a documentary on her life, I pried the screener DVD from my friend Citizen's hands (though she later asked me for my take) and hunkered down to learn about being a woman in a male-dominated field, how the heck she earned that position in the first place, the toughest questions she ever asked a president, her perspective on journalism today, etc. To see what I thought of the doc and to view a trailer,

Well, what I got was a bit unexpected: a cheery 40-minute tribute-ish program that is definitely entertaining but far too shallow for my tastes. It left me wanting more, and got me thinking. . .doesn't a woman of this stature and with this much experience deserve a longer, more in-depth documentary devoted to her? I think so.

But if you've also been intrigued by Helen Thomas over the years, tonight's documentary will definitely make you smile, even though you might want for more.

For the eyes, she suggests using a shimmery white like Diamond in the inner corner and contouring with a warm, sandy brown like Twig. Finish it up with a swipe of cream eyeliner on the upper lid only. Try blush in an apricot hue, like Sandalwood, and finish with a generous swipe of lipstick in classic red. And just like that, you're ready to sidle on up to the hottest dude at the bar and purr something along the lines of, "Happy birthday, Mr. President." If he looks confused, don't worry-he's just wondering who is this sex goddess that strolled up.

Glee-ful Highlights From Episode "I Kissed a Girl"

Everyone's got election fever on this week's Glee, and we find out the results of both the student body and congressional race. Because of the political ad threatening to expose Santana, we watch her deal with her sexuality, and the support she gets (and doesn't get) from those around her. It brings out a soft side of Finn (no, that's not a reference to Santana's preferred insults for Finn), who asks everyone to sing a song celebrating women. Sue also gets taken to task for her love life, but her tactics end up hurting Coach Beiste.

Meanwhile, Puck and Shelby take their forbidden relationship to the next level, and Rachel does something to help Kurt, but she ends up hurting the whole glee club. It's a surprisingly emotional episode, and there are lots of great lines (Santana and Sue really outdo themselves this week), but what made it for me are this week's upbeat, encouraging musical numbers. The second episode of Glee's third season has quite a bit more emotional meat than the premiere did, bringing Rachel's birth mother Shelby back to shake up both Rachel and Quinn's worlds. Meanwhile, the glee club begins dance practice and the school's musical starts its auditions, which affect Kurt in a few negative ways.
