Dueling Snow White Movies: How to Tell Them Apart

2012 will be the year of Snow White. There are currently two films from two different studios in the works based on the classic fairy tale: Universal's Snow White and the Huntsman, due June 1, 2012, and Relativity's Untitled Snow White Project, which is scheduled for March 16, 2012. As they race to the theater, it's been tough keeping up with the separate casts and trying to not get them confused, so I'm helping you out. I've got the two casts split up by movie so you can tell each project apart. Check them out before next year, when you'll have the chance to determine which movie is the fairest of them all.

Fans Go Wild For New Superman Henry Cavill at WonderCon's Immortals Panel

Henry Cavill was announced as the new Superman just two months ago, but at WonderCon today, it quickly became apparent that the handsome hero already has a following. Cavill took the stage along with Luke Evans and Isabel Lucas, director Tarsem Singh (The Cell, The Fall), and producer Mark Canton (300) to present never-before-seen footage from their upcoming mythology action flick, Immortals. Freida Pinto, Mickey Rourke, and Kellan Lutz also star, though they were unable to attend (Lutz unfortunately missed his flight after a Breaking Dawn shoot went until 6 a.m. this morning!).

The movie tells the story of the Greek Perseus, a warrior who gets handpicked by Zeus (Evans) to save humankind from evil King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke). Lutz plays Poseidon, Lucas steps in as Athena, and Pinto costars as Perseus's love interest. But even though the stars were at WonderCon to talk about their new action project, Superman was a very hot topic.

Canton and Singh opened up the show with a first-ever look at footage from Immortals. The clip showcased Cavill and his crazy physique from training for the role, along with quick moments from other members of the cast (though I didn't catch Lutz in the teaser unfortunately). But more so than the actors, Singh's visual aesthetic is the obvious star of the project. The director said he approached the film as a mix between a Caravaggio painting and Fight Club, but mainly, it feels very reminiscent of 300 - and no wonder, since it has the same producers. The camera shots are artistic and several of the scenes are in slo-mo for maximum dramatic effect.
One difference audiences may notice is the young spin the film is taking with some of the characters. At only 32, Evans is nearly half the age of the most recent version of Zeus we've seen onscreen (Liam Neeson), but director Singh gave an explanation that actually makes a lot of sense: "If you wanted to live forever, would you want to look like anyone in their 40s or 50s or 60s, like me and Mark, or would you want to look like that?"

Clash of the Titans Remake Gets Incredible Hulk Director

Aw, here's some news that just might break my dad's heart, seeing as Clash of the Titans is one of his favorite movies of all time. It's just like when we get indignant and protective over our most beloved movies getting makeovers (Footloose, Teen Witch, Friday the 13th, etc.). I definitely sympathize with the dismay he'll feel at knowing that Titans is getting remade, most likely with CGI Medusa snakes and everything.

Louis Leterrier, director of the most recent Incredible Hulk movie, will direct the script which is getting reworked by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan. Variety explains the story:

In Clash of the Titans, Perseus, the son of Zeus, must overcome a series of obstacles to save his beloved Princess Andromeda, including cutting off the serpent-tressed head of Medusa, who can turn a man to stone with a single glance.

Interestingly, another epic movie having to do with Greek mythology just got greenlit, with director Tarsem Singh (The Cell, The Fall) at the helm. Titled War of the Gods, the story is "set in war-torn ancient Greece, as the young warrior prince Theseus leads his men in a battle against evil that will see the gods fighting with soldiers against demons and titans." Variety points out that this "Hollywood toga party" will mean that the two movies will engage in "a full-fledged chariot race to be first."

Immortals: One Divine 3D Experience

Everyone may be jumping on the 3D bandwagon these days, but Tarsem Singh's sword-and-sandals epic Immortals is a movie perfectly fit for the 3D screen. The opening scene foreshadows the predictable plot to come, but that doesn't make this film any less of a bloody-good visual masterpiece. And while it's impossible to ignore the obvious comparison to 300 (it has the same producers, after all), Immortals has a few tricks up its sleeve, allowing it to stand apart. The brutal and psychotic King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) and his Heraklion legions are on a quest for the invincible Bow of Epirus. Once it's in his possession, he will be able to unleash the Titans and overthrow the gods on Mt. Olympus. On a seemingly insignificant pillaging spree, he comes across Theseus (Henry Cavill), a lowly stonemason at the very bottom of the social food chain.

Little does Hyperion know, Theseus has been trained by Zeus in disguise on Earth and is one hell of a fierce warrior (not to mention a generally gorgeous creature). After Theseus's mother is murdered by Hyperion, Theseus goes on a quest to take the king down. But as the movie progresses, Theseus's mission evolves when he realizes this crusade has a far larger reach than a personal vendetta. Once a nonbeliever in the gods, he comes to understand that they are on his side. Keep reading to learn where Immortals is truly visionary and where it needs divine intervention.

Lily Collins Is the Fairest of Them All

If you're keeping track of the competing Snow White films, you know that Kristen Stewart has been tapped to play the heroine in one, Snow White and The Huntsman. Now its rival film, The Brothers Grimm: Snow White, has its female lead, too. Lily Collins, best known for The Blind Side, has signed on to play Snow White in the film, which is being directed by Tarsem Singh.

Although Saoirse Ronan was rumored to be getting the role when Armie Hammer signed on to play the Prince, Singh joked with me that Collins won the role thanks to her full eyebrows this past weekend at WonderCon!

Armie Hammer Is Snow White's Prince Charming

File this one under Perfect Casting: Armie Hammer has been cast as Prince Charming in The Brothers Grimm: Snow White. The actor is best known for playing both Winkelvoss twins in The Social Network, and the tall, blond Hammer seems like a perfect fit for Prince Andrew Alcott in the dark, grown-up version of the fairy tale. Though no one has been cast as Snow White, Saoirse Ronan is reportedly in talks for the role.

Not to be confused with the other Snow White movie in the works with Kristen Stewart attached to star (Snow White and the Huntsman) this film is being directed by Tarsem Singh and also has Julia Roberts set to play the wicked queen.

Julia Roberts Throws On Her Bikini to Kiss and Swim With Her Husband Danny Moder

Julia Roberts wore a bikini yesterday to play on the beach in Kauai with her husband Danny Moder and their young children Phin, Hazel, and Henry. The Roberts-Moder clan is off enjoying a tropical vacation between projects for Julia. Earlier this Summer, she made the press rounds on behalf of her Tom Hanks-lensed Larry Crowne. The film was a minor hit at the box office - and, according to a news story that seems hard to believe, Tom Hanks gave two unhappy viewers their money back recently at a California gas station! Hopes are nonetheless high for Julia's next movie. She's starring in one of the two upcoming Snow White films, and her version, to be directed by Tarsem Singh, will also feature Armie Hammer and Lily Collins.
