First Look: Coco Chanel on Lifetime

With the fashion world abuzz at New York Fashion Week right now, it seems an apt time for Lifetime to premiere its look at the life of one of fashion's true icons: Coco Chanel. Coco Chanel stars Shirley MacLaine as the legendary designer (and Barbora Bobulova as the young Coco) who began life in a French orphanage and worked her way up through the fashion world, ultimately bringing us classic suits, the little black dress, and a perfume that's endured for decades.

Lifetime calls Chanel "a glamorous woman who was hard to love and harder to ignore," and that comes through in this trailer. Yes, there's the obligatory breathless "fashion! is! my! life!" declaration, but there are also some great scenes of MacLaine's Coco berating a woman for wearing a subpar outfit and literally ripping the skirt off her body. Oh, if only she could bring her sharp tongue to the Project Runway stage!

Biggest Victim of the Project Runway Debacle: Meredith Baxter

OK, so Lifetime doesn't have the greatest reputation. Sure, it's still better known for its women-in-crisis movies than, say, the pretty awesome Army Wives. But can we please stop blaming poor Meredith Baxter (Birney) for the network's less-than-stellar cred?

Ever since Project Runway announced it was leaving Bravo for Lifetime, writers have been searching for just the right phrase to explain Lifetime's image. And so many of them have come back to our poor ex-Elyse Keaton. Witness:

This one, calling Lifetime "the 'No. 1 network for women' and made-for-television movies starring Meredith Baxter Birney."

This one, stating that when most people think of the network, they think of "melodramatic made-for-television movies starring Meredith Baxter."
And this one, which argues that Runway-loving guys are going to have a hard time claiming they just stumbled upon the show because "the only other options on Lifetime are Meredith Baxter TV movies and Your Mama Don't Dance."

Yeah, so Baxter has done . . . let's see . . . a couple of dozen TV movies since Family Ties ended. Sure, she's played every kind of woman-in-distress under the sun. But it's not her fault that she's everyone's first thought when they need a woman to victimize (but always have come out on top). And hey, Dana Delaney was in those shoes once too, and she's real TV again now!

Maybe all this name recognition just means there's something great coming around the corner for Baxter - better, anyway, than being the sole face of "television for women." Right? Who's with me?

Seven years ago, before their starring roles on hit Fox series, in a land far, far away, Matthew Morrison and Zooey Deschanel were just two star-crossed lovers in Once Upon a Mattress. Disney's TV movie production may not have been what catapulted the two to fame toward Glee and New Girl, but we sure are glad this exists in the universe. I'm wondering if this song, "In a Little While," was on Morrison's audition tape for the part of Mr. Schuester.

Nicole, Zac, and Matthew Get Together in Cannes to Talk Paperboy

Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, and Matthew McConaughey met up in Cannes this afternoon to promote their film The Paperboy. The costars chatted about their project on the French TV program Le Grand Journal. Zac's face was freshly shaved after he took off from LAX yesterday with a scruffy mustache. Matthew, meanwhile, was looking handsome for his latest event following an appearance with fiancée Camila Alves at Baoli Beach Tuesday. Nicole traveled to the South of France during a break from filming her newest movie, The Railway Man, in Scotland. There are so many stars at the Cannes Film Festival already, and the fun continues until the end of the week so stay tuned for more from the glamorous overseas event.
