Top 10 Most Memorable TV Dads

Father's Day is fast approaching, so what better time to honor some of the most memorable television fathers? I've compiled a list of my top 10 dads (and a few father figures) to go along with my great movie dads list from the other day. There were so many stern, sweet and just plain goofy men to choose from, ranging from Sandy Cohen on "The OC" to George's dad on "Seinfeld" to Al Bundy on "Married with Children," so be sure to let me know your favorites. Here's who made my final cut:

No. 10: Philip Drummond, "Diff'rent Strokes"
Philip Drummond often went around with an expression of good-natured surprise. He was utterly patient with his one natural child Kimberly and his two adopted boys Arnold and Willis. The three kids somehow found their way into crazy stressful situations (riding in cars with strangers, bank holdups, learning how to "just say no" to drugs, etc.), and then there were the hand-wringing moments, like when Philip was in the hospital after a car crash and had amnesia! But the sweet, even-tempered Philip Drummond always bounced back, and provided a supremely healthy living environment for all his kids - both adopted and natural.

No. 9: Joey Harris and Michael Taylor, "My Two Dads"
Nicole's hot city apartment with its spiral staircase and giant high-heeled chair more than made up for her strange and awkward situation: With her mother deceased, joint custody was awarded to both Joey and Michael, both of whom had had a thing with Nicole's mom. The way I saw it, Nicole had the best life, living with two dads who were remarkably opposite. There was the hot, free-wheeling dad (Greg Evigan) who could totally show her how to lighten up and party, and the uptight nervous dad (Paul Reiser) who could help her with school and who was great for anxious comedic relief. Plus, if Nicole ever needed womanly advice, "Night Court"'s Judge Margaret W. Wilbur was there to lend a hand. Besides having lost her mother, she had an awesome arrangement!

read more No. 8: Jason Seaver, "Growing Pains" To some extent, we have Jason Seaver to thank for giving stay-at-home dads a good name on TV. By working from home while his wife took a series of journalism jobs, Jason was present for all of the misadventures of his two troublemaking sons and brainy daughter.
No. 7: Henry Warnimont, "Punky Brewster" Everybody's favorite multi-colored multi-print orphan, Punky Brewster, showed up in Henry's apartment building and they were instant soul mates! Well, okay, she had to grow on Henry a little bit. And even then she was a major handful. But still, one could not hope for a funnier, cuter, more loyal little girl, and Henry knew this, even if he was kind of on the elderly, grouchy side. The two made an unlikely - but heartbreakingly adorable - pair, and I'm not sure I miss any TV duo the way I miss Punky and her Henry.
No. 6: Steven Keaton, "Family Ties" For some reason, one of my earliest TV memories is watching Alex P. Keaton (Michael J. Fox) tell his father, Steven, to stop acting like it was the 1970s. But Steven never really stopped being a hippie, and I always got a kick out of watching him try to reconcile his flower-child, liberal, public-television perspective with the views of his stodgy, conservative kids. No. 5: Charles, "Charles in Charge" OK, so Scott Baio's Charles wasn't technically a dad. But as a live-in babysitter for not one but two different families, he helped all the Pembroke and Powell kids through their awkward years - while also nabbing a perfect girlfriend, reigning in eccentric best friend Buddy, and rocking many a pair of suspenders. What child of the '80s didn't secretly want "Charles in charge of our days and our nights"?
No. 4: Jack Bauer, "24" Jack Bauer is gruff and grumbly, fierce and loving, protective and sweet. His relationship with daughter Kim (Elisha Cuthbert) is rocky at times, and he puts her life in danger more than a lot. But the thing is, Kim is one character who can always (always!) pout, "My dad is coming for you - and he's gonna make you pay!" and totally be right about that. Every time Jack Bauer saves his blonde-haired little girl (who's actually like, 25 years old), I have to cheer. No. 3: Homer Simpson, "The Simpsons" Possibly the greatest television oaf of all time, Homer's belching, beer drinking and crude humor might not make him the best role model. But he's always done his best - however bumbling he may be - to show Bart, Lisa and Maggie that he cares for them. I mean, what other father would demand that his son cut school so they could steal grease together? That's love.
No. 2: Danny Tanner, Joey Gladstone and Jesse Katsopolis, "Full House" Unsure of how to parent his three little girls after his wife's death, Danny Tanner did the only thing he could think of: He recruited his best friend and his wife's little brother to move in. As a result, Danny, Uncle Jesse and Uncle Joey teamed up for eight cheesy but wonderful seasons chock full of life lessons. No matter how serious the topic - drinking, drugs, abuse, meat loaf - it was nothing that couldn't be resolved with a heart-to-heart between Danny or the Uncles and their girls. I loved how almsot every episode seemed to freeze-frame on a father-daughter hug.
No. 1: Cliff Huxtable, "The Cosby Show" Was there any doubt Cliff would be my No. 1? He was the kind of dad we all wanted (and some of us were lucky enough to have): stern but sensitive, endearingly goofy, and serious without being preachy. He was close to his son, Theo, but also knew how to navigate the challenges of raising four daughters. It's no wonder he was your favorite sitcom dad, and it's going to take one heck of an amazing TV father to ever knock him from this perch. Did You Find Modern Family's "Little Bo Bleep" Controversial?

Oh you silly Lily! Last night's episode of Modern Family had First Amendment advocates cheering, the No Cussing Club fuming, and parents everywhere nodding their heads through the shared experience as 2½-year-old Lily seemingly dropped the F-bomb throughout the episode (it was bleeped out and pixelated so viewers never heard or saw it).

Hearing a toddler say a cuss word isn't anything new for experienced parents (though this may be the first time it was done on TV), and I, for one, found dads Cam and Mitchell's reactions quite real - in our home, we often find ourselves hiding our laughter as we utter the necessary admonishments for bad behavior.

Glee-ful Highlights From Episode "Yes/No"

Glee is back from Winter hiatus and makes a big splash this week with a genuinely awesome episode. It's super cheesy and full of multiple dance numbers and guest stars, which is essentially the recipe for Glee success, and I'll admit it gave me goose bumps more than once.

Nearly everyone's emotions and relationships are challenged in this episode: Mercedes is torn between two guys, Will contemplates taking the next step with Emma, and Finn's got big ideas for his future with Rachel. Rob Schneider Talks About His Wife as the Real-Life Inspiration For New Sitcom Rob

Saturday Night Live alum and frequent Adam Sandler collaborator Rob Schneider is coming to TV with his own series, Rob. The CBS show's title isn't the only thing that's inspired by Schneider: the premise of the midseason show, about the newlywed relationship between Rob and his Mexican-American spouse (played by Claudia Bassols) and her family, is based on Schneider's own relationship with his wife. Schneider hit the Winter TCA along with showrunners and other stars like Cheech Marin to talk about the love story behind the show.

Schneider, whose wife Patricia is from Mexico City, said their home life has inspired the show. "It's like a sitcom at our house," he said, because his wife is so funny, and since her first language is Spanish, there's often humor found in that. She's prone to saying things like "in Spanish I'm much funnier, you have no idea," and "translator off!" meaning she's not going to listen to him anymore at certain times of night.
Schneider recounted his love story with Patricia, highlighting their mutual ethnicities as a factor. "My dad's German," he explained, "they're not touchy feely," but "Mexicans kiss you when you see them and when you leave." He called it a beautiful thing, and when he first met his wife (he was a guest on a show in Mexico that she was producing), and she kissed him to greet him. He said he then begged her to go out with him for weeks, and finally she accepted, flying from Mexico to LA with her mother to meet.
Costar Bassols, who plays Rob's wife on the show, said that she has met Schneider's wife Patricia, but has not taken notes for her performance. "She has that something special that's impossible to imitate," Bassols said, and gushed about how sweet Schneider's relationship with his wife is. "Every time Rob talks about his wife, his face lights up," she said, adding that "their love story inspires this whole story." When she was done, Schneider softly said thank you to her. Since CBS released its new sitcom 2 Broke Girls, in which actress Beth Behrs plays a recently humbled heiress, Caroline, who moves to Brooklyn to hide out after her father loses their family fortune in a Ponzi scheme.

Caroline winds up living with her perpetually poor fellow waitress, Max, played by Kat Dennings, and the two hatch a plan to save their wages and start a cupcake business.

Recession-era cupcake businesses have been all the rage lately (see: Bridesmaids), but shows addressing personal finances - or lack thereof - with humor and honesty is something we don’t see very often. Caroline and Max manage to plan for their future while hustling for their present - and survive on a shoestring with admirable grace. We love that these characters live richly, even on a tight salary: After all, that's what LearnVest is all about.

And, of course, any show where the leading ladies discuss interest rates is right up our alley.

Beth Behrs: Literally up until we shot the pilot, I was working as a nanny five days a week and then as a bartender and concierge at The Geffen Playhouse on the weekends. So, I can definitely relate to being broke, right out of college and working tons of odd jobs to just pay the rent.

Stay Fit (and Sane) All Holiday Season With Alison Sweeney

We are excited to share one of our fave stories from Fitness Magazine here on FitSugar!

She has two kids, two jobs, one lofty fitness goal and a crazy holiday schedule ahead . . . how does Alison Sweeney do it? The host of The Biggest Loser and star of Days of Our Lives, who is currently training for the L.A. Marathon in March, has a few tricks to keep her life organized, manageable and healthy all at the same time. We recently spoke with Sweeney to snag some secrets and learn more about her relationship with Bob, Jillian, and this season's two new trainers, Dolvett Quince and Anna Kournikova.

How do you stay fit during the holidays?

It's really important to find a workout that you can do with no excuses (Get Sweeney's routine here!) And I keep track of my nutrition. With so many treats around, it's really easy to just pop brownies without thinking about it! You may not even be hungry. I also eat before going to parties so I'm less tempted when I get there and am satisfied with a smaller amount of the treats.

Do you and your family have any seasonal traditions?

We shop for gifts and pick out a tree together. When I was young, my parents always took me skiing in the Winter, which was really festive since I grew up in LA. It was so fun and exhausting - you're basically burning calories all day long! Now, when I'm skiing with my family, I take a picture at the top of the mountain and email it to my dad. I thank him daily for instilling this love of activity at an early age.

So you mentioned that you shop and travel - as a busy working mom of two, how do you stay connected and keep track of your to-buy lists and events this month?

There are so many distractions during the holidays, so I try to use technology to keep my family together. I use my Windows phone, which syncs with my computer, to keep track of my calendar and get photos texted to me. It's really family-oriented and you don't need a manual to understand it!
