3 Reasons I'm Excited For Tonight's Premiere of Mildred Pierce

Mildred Pierce premieres tonight, and ever since the trailer premiered last September, I've been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to feast my eyes on the new miniseries. For one, it's on HBO, which is known for its above par programming, but then you also have a cast of Oscar winners and director Todd Haynes. Simply put, it seems like a TV slam dunk. But if I had to pinpoint the reasons behind my anticipation, it really comes down to three things.

Kate Winslet. Who doesn't love her? Winslet plays the title character in the miniseries, which means she carries the majority of the work on her shoulders - she's reportedly in nearly every scene. But as her costars will attest, if anyone can handle the task, it's her. Winslet is an actress with such range and depth, and I can't wait to see her big screen presence on the small screen for a change.
The rich story. Whereas the original Mildred Pierce film with Joan Crawford added a murder to the story for a more film noir feel, this version supposedly sticks close to James M. Cain's 1941 novel. That means the story will mainly focus on Mildred and her relationship with daughter Veda (Evan Rachel Wood), so it's more about character development and the growth of Mildred as she fights the hardships of the Depression and single motherhood. That should definitely give Winslet plenty of opportunity to shine.
The styling! The series opens in 1931, and early critics are saying the details of the era are spot on. I can't wait to see the costume looks and hairdos they whip up for Winslet and Wood to wear. I'm sure they'll provide BellaSugar and FabSugar with plenty of inspiration.

TV Tonight: The Sing-Off Is Back

Wondering how you're going to spend your evenings now that your favorite shows are starting to go on hiatus? You're in luck (especially if you're a Glee fan): tonight Nick Lachey is back with the second season of The Sing-Off, a competition that puts talented a cappella groups head-to-head.

Last year's season proved to be a success (one of the groups even provided backup vocals for Glee's "Teenage Dream"), and I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing the new blood now that the show has a little more notoriety. Plus, in the age of auto tune, it's always refreshing to hear some raw voices harmonizing together. Are you excited for season two?

TV Tonight: Dancing With the Stars Makes Way For Skating

It's an evening of heated (or should I say icy?) competition on ABC tonight with the Dancing With the Stars finale, followed by the premiere of Skating With the Stars.

On Dancing, we're down to the final three as Jennifer Grey, Bristol Palin, and Kyle Massey battle it out for the disco ball trophy. Brandy got the boot last week in a surprising elimination, so it could be anyone's game at this point. We'll just have to see how the remaining contestants perform for their last spin before Tuesday's results show.

Afterward, Skating With the Stars debuts with six contestants taking to the rink. Johnny Weir is sitting at the judges' table, which has me pretty excited, but will viewers enjoy double axels as much as they enjoy a fun tango on Dancing? What say you? TV Tonight: The 2010 American Music Awards

The 2010 American Music Awards air tonight, and they're sure to be a crowd-pleaser. Rihanna will reportedly open the show with a song we've never heard her sing before, while New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys will close out the evening with a mashup - and you already know how excited I am about that. They're not the only ones who will be taking the stage: Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera, and more artists are scheduled to sing for the crowd (honestly, it's hard to choose who I'm looking forward to most!).

TV Tonight: TBS Gets Frat-tastic With Glory Daze

I hope you've been practicing your keg stands, because TBS premieres Glory Daze tonight, the network's new look at college in the 80s (think of it as a cross between ABC's Greek and Hot Tub Time Machine). The series centers around a group of buds trying to make it through university life and fraternity pledging without losing their dignity - or their pants.

Though TBS hasn't had huge success with its original programming (rest in peace, my beloved My Boys), I'm hoping Glory Daze gets a fighting chance. TV Tonight: The Weeds Season 6 Finale

Weeds's sixth season comes to a close tonight, and if the show's past finales are any indication, we're in for a big cliffhanger. Nancy and the boys have been on the run all season long, but the tables have turned now that Guillermo and Esteban have finally tracked her down. As usual, our heroine seems to be in a bit of a pickle. The show couldn't go on without her, so how do you think Nancy will squeeze out of this one? Will she and Andy finally head to Copenhagen?

Though the latest season hasn't been my favorite, I have to admit that it's grown on me. I particularly loved the twist with Silas's father, and of course, the Mark-Paul Gosselaar cameo. You all were looking forward to the show's return back in July, but how do you feel about it now? Are you geared up for the finale?

TV Tonight: Conan Is Back!

Ladies and gentlemen, the time has come: this evening is the premiere of Conan O'Brien's new late night show, Conan! With all that nasty business from earlier this year behind us, the funnyman will reclaim his spot as TV host on cable network TBS. After myriad promos and a sneak peek in the form of "Show Zero" last week, tonight we'll finally be able to watch O'Brien back in his element: behind a desk, interviewing celebrities and cracking jokes (and hopefully with a decent amount of the string dance).

Visiting Conan's new stomping grounds tonight are inaugural guests Seth Rogen, Lea Michele, and musical guest Jack White. Not that I need an extra incentive to tune in - I've missed my favorite redhead's TV presence intensely in the past few months (and evidently you have too), and I'm welcoming him back with open arms. Will you be watching Conan's return?

TV Tonight: The Women of SNL Reunite on NBC

As someone who grew up watching Saturday Night Live, I have a soft spot for sketches like Mary Katherine Gallagher, The Delicious Dish, and the Spartan cheerleaders (fun fact: I actually did a skit as Arianna in my high school talent show). So tonight's The Women of SNL special has me particularly jazzed, as several of the female veterans reunite to relive their favorite clips and bring us some new material.

Tina Fey, Ana Gasteyer, Nora Dunn, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Cheri Oteri, Amy Poehler, Molly Shannon, Maya Rudolph, Rachel Dratch, and Kristen Wiig will all be appearing, and if this early photo of them reenacting The Real Housewives is any indication, it's going to be fun times. The special starts on NBC at 9 p.m. EDT - are you going to tune in?

TV Tonight: The Walking Dead Premieres on AMC

Could Halloween night be any more appropriate for AMC's new zombie drama, The Walking Dead, to make its debut? I think not. I've been looking forward to the series, an adaptation of the graphic novels by Robert Kirkman, since he and the cast electrified the crowd at Comic-Con with footage and details about the show. Like the network's main standout Mad Men, the producers have promised a character-driven story, and not just a horror series.

Here's why I'm sold: there's the trailer, which looks dramatic and spine-tingling, and then there's Love Actually's Andrew Lincoln, who plays the show's human hero, Rick Grimes. The only reservation I have is whether it'll be too gruesome for me to stomach (I guess I'll find out tonight when I watch the premiere). TV Tonight: A Rocky Horror Glee Show

The episode you've all been waiting for is just a few hours away: tonight, Glee takes on the Rocky Horror Picture Show! I've been looking forward to this since we first heard about it at Comic-Con, and the sneak peeks at the gleeks all decked out in costumes and makeup have given me high hopes for tonight's performances.

The video leaks have already given us a taste of "Time Warp" and "Dammit Janet" (check 'em out after the break), but what other songs are you looking forward to? Personally, I can't wait for John Stamos to make his singing debut on the show, and I'm also very interested to see how Mercedes will pull off her role as the infamous Dr. Frank-N-Furter. It should be rife for comment fodder, so be sure to come back tomorrow to break down the episode bit by bit!
