Brad Pitt's Plan B to Adapt Manga Series, Miki Falls

While Brad Pitt's been busy releasing photos of his new babies, his production company, Plan B, has picked up the rights to a four-volume manga series by Mark Crilley titled Miki Falls. Variety has more details:

Story chronicles the final year of high school for Miki Yoshida, the series’ protag who tries to befriend handsome new student Hiro Sakurai but is met with resistance. Stubborn Miki, however, refuses to take no for an answer, which leads to a surprising revelation about the secretive young man.

The writer they've tapped to adapt the books for the big screen is Sera Gamble, a writer and producer on Supernatural and a finalist on that filmmaker competition show Project Greenlight (remember that show?).

I'm curious to check out this series; it sounds like a cool project with a strong female lead, which is something we could always use more of. I wonder who could play this little miss Miki. . .

S and B, the Winchester Boys, and Tyra are Back for the CW

Fans of Gossip Girl, rejoice! There's another season of frenemy-making, backstabbing, and rabble-rousing from S, B, and the rest of the Upper East Siders coming our way.

Gossip Girl is one of six series that the CW renewed today. The others: the Thursday night lineup of Smallville and Supernatural, the comedy Everybody Hates Chris, the drama One Tree Hill, and America's Next Top Model - for not one but two more cycles. All six of the shows will return this Fall, according to the CW - which I assume ends the speculation that Gossip Girl could start its second season over the summer.

In the meantime, Gossip Girl will move to Mondays when it returns April 21 with the first of five new episodes. One Tree Hill will also have more new episodes in April, and Everybody Hates Chris returned to the air with new episodes last night. Smallville has more new episodes this month and in April, while Supernatural will return April 14. And, of course, the latest cycle of ANTM has only just begun.

TV Tonight: A Very Supernatural Christmas

In a night filled with quite a few repeats, the Supernatural Christmas episode seems like it could be a bright spot. The episode finds brother demon-hunters Sam and Dean Winchester investigating a series of mysterious murders in which the victims were sucked up through the chimney - kind of like Santa in reverse. In fact, the brothers realize their killer himself is a demonic Anti-Santa.

Meanwhile, the episode also has a healthy dose of brotherly love, with flashbacks to the brothers' Christmases as kids. Does that mean we get to see more Jeffrey Dean Morgan as papa Winchester? I hope so!

To be honest, I haven't seen much Supernatural - but with how much I've been enjoying Reaper, maybe it's time for me to give it a shot. To check out a preview for tonight's episode, just read more.

Kevin Smith Meets "Heroes," and More from Comic-Con

While Phasekitty was collecting news from many of the movie panels at Comic-Con in San Diego this weekend, many TV shows were breaking news of their own. Among the most exciting bits: Kevin Smith will be directing an episode of "Heroes: Origins," the spinoff that's set to air next spring. The announcement apparently took even the "Heroes" cast by surprise, as one member exclaimed, "No way! Are you serious?"

Some of the other tidbits:

At the panel for "24," producers said they were "98 percent sure" that the show was moving to Washington, D.C., for Day 7. According to executive producer Manny Coto, Jack Bauer will be put in front of a congressional committee and asked to answer for his perceived crimes.
"Ripper," the long-awaited "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" spin-off, could actually be happening. Joss Whedon announced at the convention that he's close to an agreement to bring the 90-minute film to the BBC.
"Battlestar Galactica" producers talked a bunch about what was coming up for them next season. I'm not sure what to make of the announcements - other than the news that Lucy Lawless will return for two or three episodes - so fans, have at it!
Team user KerryG is compiling all of the "Supernatural" reports from Comic-Con, including interviews with star Jensen Ackles.

TV News Roundup, 7/12

Ladies and gentlemen, we have our Supergirl. Canadian actress Laura Vandervoort has been cast as Superman's counterpart on "Smallville." Vandervoort, who most recently played Sadie on The N's "Instant Star" and had a role in The Lookout, will make her debut in the show's season premiere.
Meanwhile, Katie Cassidy - David Cassidy's 20-year-old daughter - will join the cast of "Supernatural." She'll play a demon hunter who meets up with the Winchester boys in the first episode of the next season.
Those of us who have been enjoying Lifetime's "Army Wives" are in luck: The show, which is the highest rated series in Lifetime history, has been renewed for a second season of 18 episodes. The season will start sometime in the spring of 2008.

Coming soon to a TV near you: "Car Talk," the animated series. The show will be based on the call-in radio show where brothers Tom and Ray - or Click and Clack, as they're known - answer questions about listeners' cars. The series, which will air on PBS, apparently will pick up when the radio show ends, delving into the brothers' personal lives.

Save One Show Results: CW Shows Rule

The results of E! TV writer Kristin Veitch's Save One Show poll are in, and after more than 6 million votes, Kristin's declared not one but two winners: "Gilmore Girls" and "Veronica Mars." Kristin has an interesting account of how the voting went down, including "Gilmore"'s last-second comeback against "Veronica," which had been the clear winner.

I'm not surprised about the love for "Veronica." A lot of you seem to like it, and while I've only seen a few episodes myself, the buzz about the show has always been that it's underappreciated. But "Gilmore Girls" was more of a shock. My impression was that fans have been frustrated since creator Amy Sherman-Palladino left the show, but apparently it still has more devoted viewers than I realized.

The third- and fourth-place finishers, interestingly, are also CW shows: "One Tree Hill" (last year's Save One Show winner) and "Supernatural." They were followed by a trio of NBC shows: "Studio 60," "Crossing Jordan," and "Friday Night Lights." Check out the whole breakdown here.

Why I Love ... Jeffrey Dean Morgan

Dear Hollywood: Could you please stop killing Jeffrey Dean Morgan?

His Judah Botwin on "Weeds" keeled over before the show even started, widowing Mary-Louise Parker's character and leaving us with only sun-dappled flashbacks. Then he wooed "Grey's Anatomy" intern Izzie - and me, and the female half of America - as heart patient Denny Duquette, only to die and leave me pining. And his turn on "Supernatural" ended early this season, when that show offed him too.

It's a shame, because I could watch the scruffy, husky-voiced Morgan all day long. He was a charmer as Denny and a cool dad as Judah - and frankly, it's not often I can find a guy sexy as both a dad and a boyfriend, so clearly Morgan's got a special talent. But mostly I like the sly smile he gives his characters, like he's laughing at some secret that he can't wait to spill.

Morgan was a classic "Hey, it's that guy!" for a while, with guest-starring roles on "Monk," "JAG," and "ER" and a part in a short film directed by the dude who played Brian Krakow on "My So-Called Life." But now it's more like "Hey, it's Denny Duquette!" His "Supernatural" and "Weeds" roles were great and all, but it's going to be a long time before I stop thinking of Morgan as the hot bedridden guy who make my heart flutter while playing Scrabble.

Luckily, I'm not the only person he's enchanted. He has six movies in various stages of development, and "Greys" creator Shonda Rhimes wants him for an upcoming show.

Let's just hope he survives at least one of them this time.

Vampire Diaries "History Repeating": The Good, The Bad and The Bloody

Dear The Vampire Diaries, I see your master plan now: it's to bring it every week now. Please continue to do so. Moving on, this week we learned more about Bonnie and her family ties, revealed Damon's master plan, and met the new mysterious, history teacher.

But that's not even half of the amazing things that went down, so to see the good, the bad, and the bloody from this week's episode, just read more.

The Good

Bonnie's talisman/necklace is bringing her nightmares and visions of her ancestor Emily, who we learn was definitely Katherine's handmaiden back in the day. Her appearances are so creepy, but I was kind of digging that the scares were coming from a non-vampire source.
Damon and Stefan's interactions this week are brilliant. The role reversal, where Stefan takes on Damon's persona and Damon mocks Stefan in kind, are priceless. There even seems to be some genuinely affectionate times between the brothers, but was it just Damon's vulnerability/lack of strength due to avoiding human blood?
New characters for this show have tended to be pretty intriguing, and new teacher Alaric Saltzman is no exception. The dreamy Alaric, played by Legally Blonde's Matt Davis, has a shady past (dead wife who was almost certainly murdered) and every sign points to him being a vampire: the sun-protecting ring, the lingering exchange of Jenna not inviting him in. It's almost too obvious. If he is a vamp and not some other supernatural being, then what role does he play? I'm sure he must know the Salvatores.
Gratification! In one episode, we get two mysteries solved: why Damon came back to Mystic Falls and what's up with Emily and her necklace. The master plan - and Damon's reason for return - is Katherine. Specifically, to rouse her from the spell that left her trapped but unharmed (well, relatively unharmed, considering she was already dead) underneath the church 100 plus years ago. It's news to Stefan that Katherine didn't perish in the fire, but that's not the only revelation about her; the boys trade barbs about their last encounters with their shared first love, and they both end up wounded. I think Stefan is lying when he insists that Katherine compelled the brothers into loving her and that it wasn't real; why else would he have come out of hiding to pursue Elena?
One seed-planting I appreciated: The Gilbert family history. You know Jeremy's on the verge of discovering something big. I have my theories.

The Bad

Right about now I feel the need to introduce something I'd like to call Twilight Corner. It'll be where I bring up any glaring similarities The Vampire Diaries has to that other vampire story. This week, it's Stefan leaving Elena, telling her it's for the best. I smirked early on, when Stefan tells Elena that he's backing off from school, that it's the right thing to do; but I pretty much spit my water out at the end of the episode when Stefan tells Elena he's leaving to protect her while they're in the woods. Shades of New Moon! Generally, the show has distinguished itself from Twilight but that's waaay too close for comfort.

The Bloody

Damon swears off drinking human blood in a demonstration of goodwill to Stefan after killing Lexie last week. My my. Damon, showing repentance? What is this crazy fake world coming to? However, he doesn't maintain his new diet for long: he takes a big bite out of a possessed Bonnie after she, as Emily, destroys the amulet and Katherine over the Fells Church ruins.
OK, let's talk past bloody: We got more of the story of the history of Mystic Falls, including what sounds like an epic, ongoing battle between vampires and humans. It was no accident that Katherine was in that church, having been rounded up by the townspeople to be killed. And she wasn't alone; Emily sealed up the whole church, full of other vampires, who potentially could have been freed upon the town this week. Stefan accuses Damon of not wanting to free Katherine out of love, but revenge, rather; he nearly introduces an army of angry, ancient vampires on the ancestors of the people who exterminated them. Personally I think it was a little bit of both for Damon - love and revenge. He almost has his soul mate and a group of allies back in his life.
I'm counting Damon's broken heart as a casualty this week, as cheesy as that sounds. I just can't ignore how wrecked his face looks at the end of the episode. We went from seeing how inhumane Damon is just last week, to being confronted by an emotional man who faces a final loss of love. Ian Somerhalder, you're rocking it.
