Memorably Geeky Super Bowl Commercials

Being scholars of the empirical battle known as Star Wars, naturally our favorite commercial during last year's Super Bowl game was Volkswagen's now-classic Darth Vader commercial. The TV ad showed, through a geeky lens, that not just extreme sports or models are needed to sleekly highlight a product. Beyond the mini-Darth spot, last year's game had its share of geek-approved commercials. Were these your favorite, too?

Bridgestone Reply All - It's the office drone's biggest fear: Reply All. The cheeky ad for tires tapped right into the tech nightmare that keeps us up at night.

Coca-Cola Fantasy Epic - A fantasy war worthy of a Tolkien treatment, this commercial showed you can buy a Coke in any world to make the locals smile.

Get enough action during the Super Bowl yesterday? If you were busy high-fiving your fellow fans between plays and missed the fun, funny, and sometimes "awwww"-worthy ads, then here's your chance to catch up.

Now through Feb. 10, you can watch all of the Super Bowl XLV ads on Facebook's official sports page, and vote for your favorites by "liking" them. The one who goes home with the most votes will be crowned the official 2011 Facebook Replay Winner! While I was definitely entertained by the commercials, I feel like most of them weren't as geeky as last year. Remember the Intel ads? Genius.

New Volkswagen Commercial: May the Force Be With Your Family

The force can be with your family . . . if you buy a $20,000 Volkswagen. That's the message that the German automaker's 2012 Passat commercial (that has gone viral) delivers. In it, a child dressed in a Darth Vader costume flashes the vehicle's lights with a flick of the wrists (via his onlooking father's automatic key fob). Making a car "family cool" is a tactic Volkswagen used in 2008 when a parody starring Brooke Shields was created to unload Routan minivans. And the entertaining tactic has become popular with other brands from Toyota to Evenflo, too. This spot was created to air during the Super Bowl, but you can check it out early.

Admittedly, I laughed when I saw this commercial on Super Bowl Sunday. The visual of a dog getting revenge on a taunting human hit home, but then I began to analyze the moral. Is it all in good fun or does it show that these collars are too cruel for a human (by his dramatic shocking) . . . but not too horrible to still use on pets?

Since my favorite commercial during last year's Super Bowl was Hank and his helper – I'm tearing up just remembering the sweetness – I was expecting big things from Budweiser again this year. Of the three spots featuring the famed horses, there was the Clydesdale immigrant from Scotland, the starcrossed lovers' horses with Daisy circus-bound and this cute clip of a fetching competition:

Since it also prominently starred a pup, I picked this clip to compare to last year's doggie horse trainer commercial (refresh your memory here), which furball-featured ad ranks higher with you?

Buzz In: What Were Your Favorite Super Bowl Ads?

The fun of the Super Bowl may be behind us (go Steelers!), but the ads will remain, at least for a little while. Not all of last night's ads had me laughing out loud, but there were a few I particularly liked - and I'm curious to know which ones caught your eye (besides the movie trailers - we're talking about those over here).

My top tier includes Hulu's "evil plot to destroy the world" ad with Alec Baldwin, Teleflora's offensive talking flowers (seriously, folks? Don't send me flowers in a box from now on!), Pedigree's giant pets, and cars.com's David Abernathy, boy genius ad (which reminded me a little of a Wes Anderson movie, though I was also oddly put off when I found out it was for cars.com). Others that made me laugh - maybe more than they should have - were SoBe's 3-D lizards, the Doritos crystal ball (which topped USA Today's ad meter), and the Denny's thugs. The dating Budweiser clydesdales made me "squee" a little, and of course I got a laugh out of Conan's Swedish ad. And even though it's basically a repeat from last year, I'm so glad the E-Trade baby has a friend.

Catch All the Super Bowl Commercials on AOL

C'mon. . . who realllly watches the Super Bowl for the football? OK, maybe there's a good portion of you, but usually I'm too busy drooling over the delicious dishes and whipping up fancy cocktails to pay attention to what's happening on the field. Although there is always one thing that piques my interest - the commercials! I can't wait to watch the big Monsters vs. Aliens 3D Trailer, but just in case I miss any of the commercials, I can also head on over to AOL's 2009 Super Bowl Commercial site where all the ads will be streamed!

Story Behind the Scenes: Clydesdales and Dalmatians

Dogs and horses, I'm sold! Of all the Super Bowl hits and misses, I've gotta say that the Budweiser commercial of a horse with a dream topped my list. Off the bat, I love checking out these horses and their doggie pals - did you know that the Dalmatian was introduced to the traditional Budweiser Clydesdale procession on Mar. 30, 1950 to celebrate the opening of the Newark brewery?! These companions to the hitch had a vital role during the early days of brewing, they were trained to protect the horses and guard the wagons while the drivers went in to make their deliveries. Nowadays, they typically ride shotgun, perched atop the wagon next to the driver anytime the Budweiser Clydesdales make a public appearance - each hitch, hamlet, and theme park usually has two Dalmatians each!

According to Jim Poole, general manager for Clydesdale Operations, the dogs and horses have a strong bond as they are introduced (and obedience trained) since puppyhood . . . and often the pooches sleep in the stables at night, too! "People really love the Dalmatians," added Poole. "Along with the Clydesdales, they are another great tradition and symbol for Anheuser-Busch." It makes so much more sense why they chose this doggie to inspire Hank to get in shape and join the ranks of the famed Budweiser Clydesdales - the pony and pooch were probably already good pals!
