TV News: Casting, Recasting, and Some Dream Casting

We now mostly know what shows will be on our TVs come Fall - but who will be starring in them? After pilot season comes a flurry of casting and recasting, as actors whose shows didn't get picked up look for work and networks change up the lineups on some of the forthcoming series. Today, there's word of a big casting, some recastings, and Joss Whedon's dream casting:

The casting: Freddie Prinze Jr.'s ABC comedy pilot wasn't picked up, but the actor didn't have to wait long for a job: He's joining the cast of 24 as a Marine who dreams of becoming a sort of Jack Bauer Jr. He joins a growing number of new cast members for the season, including Anil Kapoor, John Boyd, Chris Diamantopoulos, and Jennifer Westfeldt.
The recastings: A few pilots-turned-series are already searching for replacements for their lead actors. Among those now out of work: Julia Ormond, who was supposed to play the head of surgery in CBS's Three Rivers, and two lead actors in ABC's The Forgotten, Reiko Aylesworth and Rupert Penry-Jones.
The dream casting: Summer Glau is out of work following the cancellation of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, but Joss Whedon might have a job for her. As you read this, he's trying to come up with just the right role to get her onto Dollhouse next season. He doesn't really want her to play an active, though - so what else could you picture her doing on the show?

Men of the Year Party With the Women Who Are Obsessions

Two out of GQ's four cover boy Men of the Year came out to celebrate at the Chateau Marmont in LA last night. Jon Hamm and Leonardo DiCaprio both lived up to their steamy covers while Michael Phelps and Barack Obama (surprise) couldn't make it to the red carpet. Obsession of the year Megan Fox looked hot in pink and kept her boyfriend Brian Austin Green close for photos. Sarah Silverman and Jimmy Kimmel still don't want to define their relationship, but things seem very on again for this duo. January Jones looked glamorous as ever posing without her on-screen Mad Men husband Don Draper, but if the second season of the show taught us anything it's that Betty is just fine by herself. The party may have been about the men of the year, but the women held their own before heading in for a night of fun.

TV Tonight: Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which returns to start its second season tonight on Fox, is one of the more interesting stories of last TV season. The show premiered during the doldrums of the writers' strike, got a mixed critical reaction, and somehow by the end of the season became a buzzed-about show.

How? I'm not sure, but I think the show's innovative casting probably had something to do with it. I mean, Brian Austin Green as a badass? (Showrunner Josh Friedman told the very funny story behind that one back at Comic-Con, ending with him asking the onetime 90210 star "When did you get to be so hot?") This year's entry into the Annals of Improbable Casting is Garbage lead singer Shirley Manson, who's playing a technology company CEO.

But choosing interesting actors won't go too far if the story's not good, and Terminator: TSCC seems to be picking things up on that front as well: At the show's Comic-Con panel, producers announced that someone on the stage would die before the end of season two. The cast reacted with relative horror; it seemed they didn't even know which one of them was the goner. I guess that's one of those things we just have to watch and see.

Last night at the 2008 Teen Choice Awards in Los Angeles, the overall beauty look on the red carpet was casual chic. Although I'm sure the gals took a long time primping for the big night, they managed to create an effortless, age-appropriate effect.

One of the hottest hair styles of the evening was quintessential summertime sexy beach waves. Creating this carefree hairstyle is easy to achieve with either store-bought or homemade beauty products. What do you think of this look? Is it something you'd like to don for a special event?

WonderCon 2008: Connor Chronicles Convos

If you haven't been tuning into Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles lately, you've been missing out on some sweet geeky hotness (i.e.: Brian Austin Green and Thomas Dekker). . .and that's about it. The show itself is pretty comical (not in a good way), but definitely action packed - if you like sweaty men running around with guns that are being hunted by cybernetic organisms from the future. And who doesn't, right? Right. Despite the backlash of viewers accusing the show of having continuity and character issues, it's still doing pretty well for itself since crushing the competition its opening week.

Although I'm not a big fan of the show, I am a fan of Summer Glau. And on day three of WonderCon, I was not alone. Many of my Firefly and Serenity comrades were in the crowd as well to support our "River Tam." On the fun they have behind the scenes: "Thomas comes in each morning wearing sunglasses – even if it's raining – and rehearses as a different character, not as John Connor. It makes the directors nervous."
Writer Josh Freidman on convincing producers to bring a Reese back from the dead: "I was sitting in a coffee shop with James Middleton, and I was like, "Dude! I know what I'm gonna do - I'm gonna bring Kyle Reese back" and he said, "You're gonna get Fu**ing killed!" I had this whole thing worked out and he was looking at me like I was crazy. So I was like, "How 'bout his brother?" and he said "Oh, that would be good."

Summer on reading the show's message boards: "I can't go on the boards. . . but I let my mom send me some of the good links and she'll say "See? People like you! And I'll click on that."
Josh's reply when asked if he's heard that there's going to be a T4: "There is!?"

Knights of Badassdom Trailer: Ryan Kwanten Ditches True Blood For Medieval Times

Knights of Badassdom revolves around a group of modern day men involved in medieval times LARPing (live-action role playing, for the uninitiated), but the truly bad-ass thing about the movie is the cast. It features small screen stars I adore, like True Blood's Ryan Kwanten, Game of Thrones' Peter Dinklage, and Community's Danny Pudi. Steve Zahn and Summer Glau round out the group, who get so caught up in their cosplay (that's costume play) that they accidentally unleash a demon woman. To get rid of her, they have to summon up the LARP skills they've been accruing and actually put their swords and armor to good use.

There are some funny moments in the trailer, but it's truly worth it just to see Kwanten doing comedy (which I need after his recently creepy story arc on True Blood). Check it out when you
