The Votes Are In: The Best Reality and Sci Fi Shows of 2008

In my best of 2008 polls, you weighed in on which shows in different genres you thought were the highlights of the year. Today, it's time to name a couple of winners: the readers' picks for the best reality show and best sci fi show of 2008. The results:

Best Reality Show of 2008
Project Runway

It may not have been the easiest year for Project Runway, but that didn't keep it from winning Buzz readers' love as the top reality show of the year. It didn't run away (. . . heh) with the category, though: So You Think You Can Dance was a strong second and had lots of vocal support in the comments. The Hills was third, despite some dispute over whether it was truly "reality" or not, and Top Chef was barely behind in fourth.

Other Bravo shows were the top write-in contenders, including The Rachel Zoe Project and Top Design.

Best Sci Fi Show of 2008
Fringe

Fox's newcomer Fringe won this category pretty handily, and supporters cited its steady improvement throughout the season and the hilarious Walter Bishop as their reasons for picking it. Heroes came in second, apparently shaking off its second place finish in the shows-that-need-makeovers category, and Battlestar Galactica and Supernatural weren't far behind.

The biggest write-in candidate was Lost, with lots of people making convincing cases for why the show should be considered sci fi. Other write-ins included Doctor Who? and Torchwood.

The Votes Are In: The Best Breakthrough Album and "Everywhere Song" of 2008

In my best of 2008 polls, you sounded off on the music that kept you rocking all year long. Which artist had the best breakthrough and which song did you never mind when it got stuck in your head? Read on . . .

Best Breakthrough Album
Leona Lewis, Spirit

Most of the artists in this category got great feedback in the comments, but it was Lewis's Spirit that ultimately surged ahead with a little more than a quarter of the vote. Behind Lewis, it was a virtual tie for the second spot between MGMT's Oracular Spectacular and Katy Perry's One of the Boys, with Vampire Weekend's self-titled debut not too far behind.

Suggestions among the write-ins were Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, and Duffy.

Coldplay, "Viva La Vida"

Apparently, most of you didn't mind too much that "Viva La Vida" was everywhere this year - it won this poll with a solid 20 percent of the vote. Just a couple of dozen votes behind was Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl," with Leona Lewis's "Bleeding Love" in third. After that, three songs were bunched close together in the voting: Britney Spears's "Womanizer," Rihanna's "Disturbia," and Estelle's "American Boy."

For my best of 2008 series, I asked you to pick the best new TV show and new character of 2008. One of the decisions was easy, while the other was a fight to the finish. Who came out on top? Read on . . .

Best New TV Character of 2008
Holly, The Office

Holly, come back! Amy Ryan made her first appearance as Holly Flax in the fourth-season finale of The Office, and she immediately endeared herself to Office fans, winning almost a quarter of the vote in this crowded field. It's just a shame that she's not scheduled to be in any more episodes after her cruel transfer to New Hampshire.

Kevin McKidd's hunky Owen Hunt of Grey's Anatomy came in second, and third place was a virtual tie between Megan (JoAnna Garcia) of Privileged and Walter Bishop (John Noble) of Fringe.

Best New TV Show of 2008
Tie: Fringe and True Blood

Even after some extra prodding, this poll remained so close that I eventually had to just call it a tie between Fringe and True Blood. Each show rallied a large (and nearly identical) number of fans, with each getting about 22 percent of the vote.

Not too far behind in third was The CW's Privileged, which also pulled away from the pack with 18 percent of the vote. Lipstick Jungle finished fourth. A couple of write-in votes went to Worst Week and My Own Worst Enemy.

The Votes Are In: Best Television Relationships of 2008

This roundup of my best of 2008 poll winners is all about the relationships: I'm naming your top vote-getters for the best platonic relationship, best romance, and best romantic tension on TV this year. Who gets the awards? Let's see . . .

Best TV Platonic Duo or Trio of 2008
Marc and Amanda, Ugly Betty

Now repeat champions, Marc and Amanda took this category pretty easily with 25 percent of the vote. But it wasn't as much of a landslide as the 2007 contest, though. For the second year in a row, House and Wilson of House came in No. 2, but the competition was tight for third place between Liz and Jack of 30 Rock and Serena and Blair of Gossip Girl.

Denny Crane and Alan Shore, in their parting season as Boston Legal buds, got some write-in support, as did a number of pairings of characters from Greek, including Rusty and Cappie and Rusty and Calvin. McSteamy and McDreamy from Grey's Anatomy were another popular couple, as were some folks from Pushing Daisies - but more on that in a second.

Chuck and Blair, Gossip Girl

Honestly, it wasn't even close. Mr. Chuck Bass and the Upper East Side's Queen B are clearly tops when it comes to heating up your screen with their particular love-hate relationship. They ended up with more than half the vote, blowing all the other competitors out of the water. The only people who could even come close were House and Cuddy of House, who ranked second, and Cristina and Owen of Grey's Anatomy, just behind them in third.

That said, I think Chuck and Blair would have had some strong competition from Bones and Booth of Bones, who were the leading write-in candidates by far (by far). A few of you also supported Chuck and Ned from Pushing Daisies; as amanda44ni wrote, "What's more tense than not being able to touch?" I considered them a full-out romance for the purposes of these polls, though, which brings us to . . .

Jim and Pam, The Office

Ned and Chuck definitely had their supporters here, coming in a strong second, but in the end they just couldn't beat some delicious Jam. Jim and Pam took their relationship to the next level this year with Jim's sweet proposal, and for that, they've solidly won your support as the best romance of '08.

Another Office romance also made a dent on the list, with Holly and Michael's all-too-brief tryst coming in at No. 3. There was some write-in support for Sookie and Bill from HBO's True Blood, too.
