Strangers with Candy Crew Reunites . . . For Kids

I wouldn't exactly name Strangers with Candy, the 1999 Comedy Central series, as an example of child-friendly fare. And if I were looking to make an actual after-school special - not a Strangers-style spoof - I don't think creator Paul Dinello and star Amy Sedaris would be the first people I'd call.

But Nickelodeon is apparently way, way cooler than I am: The network has hired Dinello to direct Gym Teacher: The Movie, which will air on Nick in September. The movie stars Christopher Meloni as an ex-gymnast who's up for a PE Teacher of the Year award. According to Entertainment Weekly, Dinello personally ordered Sedaris to "pack up her wig" and join him on set; she'll play the principal.

And this won't be the only time they collaborate with the kids' network: EW reports that Nickelodeon also has its eye on Tanner Hall, the Dinello-written, Sedaris-starring movie that got its start as a failed UPN pilot back in the day and features Sedaris and Chris Kattan as dysfunctional parents. Hmm . . . could the awesome Nickelodeon of my childhood be making a comeback?

How I Gained 30 Pounds in College (and Then Lost It)

In college, I was no stranger to the "Freshman 15." In fact, all that newfound freedom to eat whatever and whenever combined with the all-you-can-eat dining hall and late-night pizza runs made it the "Freshman 30." Now that I've been at a healthy weight for a while, I can look back on all the mistakes I made. I'm sharing these mistakes now in the hopes that I can help someone else avoid the sadness and insecurity that comes with weight gain.

Good-bye, Home-Cooked Meals
With no one to cook me healthy, balanced meals, or tell me to eat my broccoli and not a brownie sundae for dinner, I quickly made my own - unhealthy - meal decisions. This included ordering take-out, devouring junk food, and eating way more food than I did when home.

Is That Cookie Vegan?
My school population was 90 percent hippie, and I was already a vegetarian, so it's no surprise that becoming vegan was my next move. I didn't miss milk or eggs at all. Why miss it when there's decadent vegan ice cream, dairy-free cheese, and even a pizza place downtown serving vegan pizza? I was a total junk-food vegan and must have gained 10 pounds on vegan cookies alone. The late-night candy runs for Swedish fish didn't help either.

No, I Don't Need a Bowl - I'll Eat Out of the Bag
Chips, cookies, crackers, cereal; I ate a lot of my snacks with no plates or bowls because I was too lazy to do the dishes, which often meant polishing the entire package in one sitting.

Carrot Cake Counts as a Vegetable
I may have been vegan, but I hardly ate vegetables, unless you count tomato sauce on pizza, carrot cake, and greasy french fries. My diet was based around these four food groups: pasta, bagels, cereal, and cookies. Come to think of it, I hardly ate fruit either since it wasn't that easy to find on campus (or rather, not that appealing).

Who are you? Where am I? Costumes are scary and seeing Mom and Dad in masks or other bizarre ensembles can freak out your furry family (and kids). Similarly, all those spooky decorations, especially those that move and talk are equally frightful for observant pups.
No loose animals today. Don't leave pets in your yard on Halloween and bring indoor/outdoor cats inside. Disguises can cause people to behave differently and you don't want a pet to be teased, injured, scared (or worse!) by pranksters tonight.

Crowd control. If your pet will accompany your family trick-or-treating or to a parade, watch out for tiny pups under big feet. Make sure your dog is OK with strangers and noise before you set out and return home immediately if you see pooch is stressed. If you're throwing a pet-friendly bash, keep candy and chocolate away and follow these tips.
Minimal stress spots only. If you think a pooch will get panicked by the constant buzzer, or frustrated that he can't go out, either sequester him in another part of the house away from candy or place a sign on the doorbell asking for knocks only, please.

Use Fellow Gym Rats to Motivate a Better Workout

In a recent Facebook post, I asked readers "What annoys you most about your gym?" and you responded with tons of venting comments about your fellow gym goers. People hog machines, chat loudly on their cell phones, and don't wipe equipment down when they're finished, and their outfits (or lack thereof) are an annoyance as well. I totally hear you. People bother me too, but here are some ways you can use those other gym rats to get a better workout.

Compete With a Stranger
The next time you're on a treadmill, elliptical, stationary bike, or other cardio machine, use someone else's drive and passion to pep you up. Find someone on a machine that looks like they're working hard and pretend you're racing them. It's great inspiration to feed off their fire, and you'll be surprised at how suddenly you have a burst of energy. I find that I can go longer or faster when I'm mock competing with someone else.

Be a Copy Cat
Bored with your usual strength training routine? Casually check out other people to see how they're targeting their muscles to get ideas for new exercises. You might catch someone using a medicine ball and think, "Hmm, I never thought to hold one while doing abs - brilliant." Mixing up your routine with a few new moves can offer a more effective workout and will also prevent boredom.
