Blake Lively Shows Her Soderbergh Support at the Haywire Premiere

Blake Lively was decked out in Dolce & Gabbana last night for the NYC premiere of Haywire. She's not in the movie, but leads Ewan McGregor and Gina Carano were there from the cast, along with director Steven Soderbergh. The picture hits theaters tomorrow on Jan. 20, and so far the Haywire reviews are great. Justin Bartha and Elizabeth Banks also rolled through to check out the screening, and joined the festivities at the afterparty, held at Sons of Essex.

Blake and Steven will work together soon, though. It was recently announced that Blake will star in Soderbergh's The Side Effects opposite Channing Tatum and Jude Law. For now, it's Gossip Girl that's Blake's main focus, as is her relationship with Ryan Reynolds.

Matt Damon and Marion Cotillard Bring Their Infectious Smiles to NYC

Matt Damon arrived hand in hand with his lovely wife, Luciana, at tonight's NYC premiere of Contagion. The couple posed for photos before Matt went on to meet up with Marion Cotillard and director Steven Soderbergh on the red carpet. It was a wild day for Matt, who kicked things off before dawn with appearances on The Today Show and Live With Regis and Kelly. Matt touched on the seriousness of infectious disease, the focus of the film, and then switched gears to a lighter subject when he revealed he'll be dropping three of his daughters off for the first day of school this week. Marion arrived on the East Coast with her son, Marcel, recently and was also busy hitting the talk show circuit. She dropped by Late Night With Jimmy Fallon this afternoon and is scheduled to visit The Daily Show With Jon Stewart tomorrow. Matt and Marion's costar Gwyneth Paltrow stepped out to promote the film in Venice over the weekend, but tonight she missed out on the Big Apple screening. Instead, Gwyneth partied with friends in London.

George Clooney Says U.N.C.L.E. For Steven Soderbergh

George Clooney's a secret agent man. The actor is reportedly in talks with Steven Soderbergh for the director's latest, a big screen adaptation of the sixties TV series The Man From U.N.C.L.E.. The show follows two secret agents working at the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement, or U.N.C.L.E. for short (though Mad Men fans may know it best as one of Sally Draper's favorite shows).

This is all familiar territory for Clooney. If he signs on, it will be his seventh collaboration with Soderbergh, and it isn't his first spy-type film either (lest we forget his recent movie, The American). I'm dying to hear who will play his partner in espionage. Maybe Matt Damon is available? Just a suggestion.

Damon, Law, Winslet, and Cotillard Are Contagious

Who needs an ensemble romantic comedy when you can have an equally star-studded action thriller? Steven Soderbergh has lined up three Oscar winners - and one nominee (sorry, Jude) - for his upcoming film, Contagion. Matt Damon and Jude Law are already on board, while the lovely Kate Winslet and Marion Cotillard are circling the project.

Contagion focuses on the posing threat of a deadly virus, telling the story through multiple arcs and plot lines (think Traffic meets Outbreak). Even if the premise sounds a bit stale, the ridiculously talented cast is more than enough to get me worked up about this one - especially since we know how well Jude Law and Matt Damon play off each other (just think The Talented Mr. Ripley).

The Informant!: Funny If You Can Focus!

What would happen if Michael Scott were dropped into the movie Michael Clayton? If you're wondering what to expect from Steven Soderbergh's The Informant!, the visual of Michael bumbling his way through a corporate thriller is a good place to start.

The movie is campy right from the start, almost making an announcement as cheesy music plays over the neon bubble letters of the credits. There's even the rarely seen "Matt Damon IN... The Informant" - Soderbergh isn't trying to hide anything here, though the move is set in the early '90s despite the '70s ambiance. While many of the jokes hit you over the head, don't expect the key plot elements to have the same effect.

To see what I mean, just

Matt Damon literally transforms himself into Mark Whitacre, the vice president of real-life lysine developing company ADM. On the surface, Whitacre fits right into the upper-middle class Midwestern stereotype; he's an overweight, mustachioed man who sits down to dinner with his wife and sons every night. In what seems to be a sudden attack of conscience, Whitacre takes it upon himself to rat out ADM's price-fixing schemes to two FBI agents (played by Scott Bakula and a straight-laced Joel McHale). The more involved Whitacre gets with the FBI, the more eager he is to help take down the company that made him rich. The agents (and the audience) quickly begin to wonder - what's in it for him?

Most of my laugh-out-loud moments came from Whitacre's inner monologue. At first his thoughts give us clues about the decisions he makes - he seems to be obsessed with John Grisham novels and conspiracy theories, so it's no surprise that he's relishing in his involvement with the FBI. As time goes on, however, his stream of consciousness shifts from wacky observations about the world at large to ways he can manipulate it to his own benefit.

Soderbergh has a solid lineup of supporting comedians (Patton Oswalt and Tony Hale also make appearances) but Matt Damon is the mastermind here. He shines through all that hair, makeup, and extra pounds to deliver a highly enjoyable performance that keeps you guessing. Damon's no stranger to comedy, but his role as Whitacre is a far cry from Stuck On You.

The movie has a sluggish start, and loses its focus towards the middle - but try not to doze off, since almost every loose end is eventually tied up. While only a manageable 108 minutes, the film still feels like it's a half hour longer than it should be. If I had been watching it at home, I may have been tempted to turn it off, which is a shame since many of the laughs and most of the excitement happens in the end.

There's fun to be had here, if you manage your expectations. This is not your typical comedy: the humor is dry, but the laughs are there - just try not to lose focus along the way.

Damon and Douglas to Play Lovers in Liberace Movie

Bet you never thought you'd see Matt Damon and Michael Douglas coupled up on-screen, but get ready. Steven Soderbergh has confirmed that Douglas will play Liberace in his upcoming film about the life and death of the popular 1950s performer. Damon is taking on the role of Scott Thorsen, Liberace's assistant and boyfriend who eventually revealed Liberace's sexuality to the public.

At the Deauville Film Festival, Soderbergh said, "We've already done some costume and wardrobe tests on Michael, and they're very, very, very good. I swear to you, Michael amazed me. He crushed it . . . Matt accepted the challenge. But I have to say I'd already convinced him to gain 30 pounds for The Informant."

I saw The Informant last week (more on that later), and it was really refreshing to see Matt playing an atypical character from what we're used to seeing - I'm looking forward to watching him spread his wings again. Then again, I might be more dazzled by Michael Douglas covered in sequins.

Matt and Luciana Are Glamorous and Informed in Venice

Matt Damon and Luciana stepped out in their finest formal wear at the Venice Film Festival premiere of The Informant! yesterday. The duo has already made a bit of a vacation out of the trip including a date night before Matt's photo call for the film. His weight gain for the role seems to be all anyone can talk about before the movie comes out in a few weeks, but Matt was svelte as ever in his three piece suit hand in hand with his wife. Matt's friend George also dropped his anchor down at the festival yesterday so we'll see if the buddies can get in any more QT after their Lake Como weekend earlier in the Summer.

Matt Brings His Fun Film and Luciana to Venice

Matt and Luciana Damon left LA last week and headed to Venice to promote The Informant! at the city's film festival. They stepped out for dinner last night, before Matt was up bright and early today for a photo call with director Steven Soderbergh. Matt opened up about the process of making the movie, which involved piling on the pounds, saying, "It was probably the funniest time I ever had working because I didn't have to think 'I have to go to the gym after work', and I just basically ate everything that I could see." He's already back to his usual hot shape and adding sparkle to the cinema event with his charming smile.
