Movie Preview: Tina Fey and Steve Carell in Date Night

I freaked out a little (OK a lot) when it was announced that Tina Fey and Steve Carell would play a married couple in the comedy Date Night. Well, the trailer is here, and I'm still enthusiastic about it - though I wasn't expecting it to be so action-adventure-y.

The movie revolves around a single night out for typically bored (but atypically hilarious) married couple Claire and Phil Foster. When they take another couple's dinner reservation, their romantic evening turns into an issue of mistaken identity, and they spend the night running from trouble. While I'm not thrilled by the setup, there are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments in this first preview, including some amazing appearances from Mark Wahlberg and James Franco.

Are You Surprised by Forbes's Top-Earning Men in Prime Time?

Forbes recently released the list of Prime Time's Top-Earning Men. Who made the cut? In order, they are: Simon Cowell, followed by Donald Trump, Ryan Seacrest, Charlie Sheen, Steve Carell, Howie Mandel, Kiefer Sutherland, Jeff Foxworthy, Hugh Laurie, and at No. 10 (a tie!) David Caruso of CSI: Miami and Patrick Dempsey.

Simon Cowell at No. 1 is a no-brainer, thanks to the unstoppable machine that is American Idol (not to mention all of his other shows). But there are a few names that made me do a double take. Jeff Foxworthy, for instance - who knew that Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader was such a money generator? And where's Jeff Probst? I guess the Survivor franchise doesn't carry as much clout as I thought.

What about you? Other than maybe Simon Cowell at number 1, do you find this list surprising?

Movie Preview: Despicable Me, Starring Lots of Famous Voices

The same guys who brought us the Ice Age franchise are back to create another potential hit with the 3-D CGI Despicable Me. Seems like every animated movie nowadays wrangles A-list names, but the Despicable roster is even starrier than most. Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Will Arnett, Kristen Wiig, Mindy Kaling, Jack McBrayer - it's like a laundry list of my favorite comedy people. And while I sort of wish we could see them all acting together in the flesh instead of just lending their voices, their involvement really has me hyped.

The story follows the world's No. 2 villain Gru (Carell) on his plot to steal the moon - a plan that gets thwarted by three little orphan girls who challenge his evil ways when they want him to be their dad. The trailer doesn't reveal much, but I'm sure we'll get more footage as we near the June release date. In the meantime, check out the cute preview when you read more.

Steve Carell Teeing Up For the Missing Links

So I may not play golf, but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate a good comedy based on the game. (Remember that scene in Happy Gilmore when Adam Sandler squares off with Bob Barker? Classic.) Now Steve Carell may be joining the ranks of Sandler and Chevy Chase (Caddyshack!) with a golf movie of his very own.

The Office star is reportedly in talks for Missing Links, based on a novel from ESPN sportswriter Rick Reilly. The film follows a golf enthusiast and his buddies as they hatch various elaborate strategies to get onto an exclusive course. Costars haven't been announced yet, but I'd love to see Paul Rudd or maybe Thomas Lennon as other members of Carell's foursome - just picture those guys donning goofy checked caps and argyle socks!

Carell is always reliable for a few laughs, so I have high hopes for this one - what about you? Who would you cast as his golfer friends?

Is the Jim and Pam Wedding Episode Overhyped?

The big moment we've all been waiting for is just about here: Jim Halpert and Pam Beesly will finally be married in an hour-long special episode of The Office tonight!

NBC (and the entertainment world in general) has gone all-out for the event, including an EW cover, video teasers, talk show appearances, even their own wedding site.

I can't wait to finally see Pam and Jim tie the knot, but you'd almost think we were being prepped for the series finale given all the promotion. What do you think - are you more excited than ever or is there too much buildup to Jim and Pam's big day?

The Office Season Premiere Is Something to Gossip About

Tomorrow is Sept. 1, which means Summer is officially over as far as I'm concerned. Time to move on to bigger and better things - like Fall TV! Back at the TCA, I was lucky enough to explore the set of The Office and chat with the cast about the upcoming season, which starts on Sept. 17. We already heard about Pam and Jim's wedding - not to be confused with John Krasinski's real-life engagement to Emily Blunt - but here are a few fun tidbits about what else we can expect in season six:

Jenna Fischer on trying on Pam's wedding dress: "It really is very neat. Trying on the dresses for Pam was emotional and really felt significant. It feels like she's a person I've been rooting for for so long and to see her finally getting her dream come true is neat."
Producer Paul Liberstein on what we can expect from Michael: "We're trying to get him a little wackier. We'll see. I enjoy the wacky Michael."
Liberstein on keeping the show in the actual office: "We're staying in the office a lot more than we did last season. I think there's a kind of a feeling that people enjoy in-the-office stories more when all of the characters are together, interactions between the characters. And so that's - but after 100 episodes, it's hard. But we're trying harder to do it. Some episodes are out."

If the quotes aren't enough for you, NBC has also rolled out two new promo videos to get us fired up. In the season premiere, "Gossip," the cast starts speculating on Pam's secret pregnancy, which of course turns into all kinds of hilarious, yet absurd, rumors about the other co-workers. There are also some cute behind-the-scenes interviews with the actors talking about their on-screen counterparts.

The Office Rundown: Episode 28, "Company Picnic"

Aw, you guys, for a comedy, this season finale of The Office is pretty darn sweet! Jim and Pam traditionally have big moments in Office finales, but there's another love story at play here when Holly Flax - and boyfriend AJ - meet up with Michael at the company picnic. There's also volleyball and "soup snakes." Want to see some of my favorite moments? Just read more.

Eeep! Pam's pregnant! I mean, we didn't actually hear the words - isn't it funny that Jim and Pam's biggest moments this season have been silent? - but her smiley reaction totally gives it away. I love the bug-eyed look on Jim's face, and then the joy as he swoops in for a hug.
Backing up: Pam and Jim only plan to stay at the Dunder Mifflin company picnic for a few minutes because they don't seem to have much luck at big office gatherings. Some drunk guy hit on Pam last year and said he was grabbing her for balance. Pam: "You don't grab these for balance." I love the mischievous look on Jim's face.
Dwight shows up at the picnic with his friend Rolf, who's the perfect companion for him. Dwight says they met at a shoe store: "I heard him asking for a shoe that could increase his speed and not leave any tracks."
Aw, the moment when Michael first sees Holly is so adorably awkward. He and Holly hug a little too long, then he pretends not to remember AJ, then when AJ asks for an iced tea he semi-jokingly tells him to go to hell. All episode long, he manages to just barely tolerate AJ: "So, what is up with you two, Holly?"

Michael's planning on finding the perfect moment to read through his list of bullet points for why he and Holly should be together, which includes the fact that they're "soup snakes." Which is apparently supposed to be "soul mates."
Charles is still so mean to Jim! And he only has one joke, about Jim being sleepy. Pam asks if she should beat him up. Jim: "No, I shouldn't have to ask you to do something like that. You should just do it."
Nobody from the Scranton branch is any good at volleyball except for Pam, who's kind of a superstar. Kevin keeps getting hit in the stomach, Ryan's on the phone, but Pam has this killer serve. "Maybe I played a little in junior high. And high school. And a little in college. And went to volleyball camp most Summers." She gets them all the way to the final faceoff against corporate.
Rolf is so mean to Angela, calling her a whore and saying he doesn't hear "cheaters, tramps, or women who break my friend's heart." Eventually, though, Dwight tells him to cut it out - does that mean they're going to reconcile soon?
When AJ tells Michael he and Holly are designing a house, Michael reveals he's designing chair-pants. I love that Holly's heard this idea before!
So Michael and Holly go through a bunch of movie parodies for their skit (Jaws: "Dunder . . . Dunder . . .") before finally settling on Slumdunder Mifflinaire. It's actually going relatively well - no laughs, but hey, Stanley's into it - until they accidentally reveal that the Buffalo branch is closing.
Which, by the way, is completely David Wallace's fault. Why on earth would David Wallace tell Michael any secret company information? He should know better.
Holly and Michael's moment after the skit is so sweet! And it's awfully big of him to just enjoy her company without telling her how he feels about her. "I think that today was just about having today. I think that we are one of those couples with a long story when people ask how we found each other."
One of the funniest moments in that scene, though, was this exchange:

Michael: I guess we shouldn't have mentioned Buffalo."
Holly: "Hindsight."
Michael: "Should have had hindsight."
And, in the end, all of Dwight's stalling tactics on the volleyball court ("How many people need to get hurt before we learn a valuable lesson? One? Two? Three?") are for naught, because there appears to be a Beesly baby on the way!

Wow, I can't wait to hear your thoughts on this finale!

The Office Rundown: Episode 13, "Prince Family Paper"

First of all, it took me way too long to get the "Prince"/"prints" pun in the name of the family-run company that Michael and Dwight go to visit. But anyway. This week's episode of The Office has Michael grappling with his personal feelings over a business issue while the rest of the office has a formal debate about whether or not Hilary Swank is "hot."

One of my favorite things about this episode? Kevin. He is on fire this episode! So much Kevin goodness. For some of his best lines and other parts of the episode I enjoyed, read more.

Ha: Jim prank! He runs a red wire from Dwight's desk all the way outside and up a utility pole.
As they all start arguing over whether or not Hilary Swank is hot, Kevin says, "She looks like a monster." A monster?!
Wait . . . does this IHOP vs. Denny's argument between Dwight and Michael in the car lead to Dwight calling Michael a socialist? Just checking. Because that's hilarious.
They practice the signal that means they need to leave: Licking their lips. Which Dwight insists on doing as big and wetly as possible.
Michael explains that in nature there is something called the food chain, which consists of all sharks eating the smaller sharks until you get down to the "single-cell sharks." If you replace all the "sharks" with "paper companies" in this analogy, it is all you need to know about business.
Michael gets to know this small, family-run business owner, who opened up shop when he returned from Vietnam. "Oooh, Vietnam. I hear it's lovely."
See, this is The Office I know and love - some out-of-office stuff while all the remaining employees engage in some kind of inane craziness within the office itself. Such as having a formal debate over whether or not Hilary Swank is hot. Kevin wants to be firm about the differences between "attractive," "beautiful," and "hot." "A painting can be beautiful, but I don't want to bang a painting."
Michael: "Laughter is my job. Tears are my game. Law is my profession."
Kevin, after almost being lured by Jim to the "Hot" side: "It's 'is she hot?' Not 'would you do her?' Respect the game."
Angela doesn't even get the debate - "Hot is a temperature, people" - but she wants Kevin to lose, so she joins the "Hot" team, saying Hilary Swank is hot as heck. "She's a female Boris Becker."
Kelly is upset because if Hilary Swank's not hot then that means she's not hot because she's not as hot as Hilary Swank! Is it sad that I've thought things like this before?

Ha! Dwight and Michael waggling their tongues at each other as they are about to leave the office. Then they try to peel out of the parking lot but only end up damaging the car, which only brings out more kindness in the Prince family.
These presentations for the "Hot" side and the "Not Hot" side are hilarious:
Pam: "Ladies. Are we prepared to let the Kevins of the world decide anything for us? Anything at all? We don't even give him full Internet access." (Kevin: "Wait, what?")
Oscar talks technically about the symmetry of facial features in order to prove that while yes, Hilary Swank is attractive, she's not hot.
Stanley dramatically, passionately says that finding fault with Hilary Swank is "no way to live life."
I love that as Dwight and Michael walk back into the office, Jim's saying "All I'm saying is Kevin's not necessarily a feminist, is all I'm saying."
Dwight is not familiar with the expression "Live and let live." "It doesn't make any sense . . . of course I'm alive . . ."
Michael's heart does not want to give David Wallace the list of the Prince's clients. Dwight reminds Michael that his heart makes terrible decisions and Michael agrees. "Jan. . . Ryan. . ."
Dwight then resorts to telling Michael about Frodo and The Lord of the Rings. But it doesn't work and Michael wants to get rid of the list, so Dwight chases after him and grabs the list, saying that it's business, not personal.
Michael: "I'm not a shark!"
Aw, "bittersweet": Dwight, after Michael gives the client list to David Wallace: "Well guess whose stock just went up, Golden Boy."

The Office Rundown: Episode 12, "Duel"

Aaaaaand we're back! This new episode of The Office starts out with Michael running as fast as he can past the new radar gun set up just outside Dunder-Mifflin and ends with Dwight handing over his bow and arrows to the box of weapons Jim is holding. Only Office fans can truly make sense of this. It's a crazy day for Dunder-Mifflin employees: Michael's been summoned by David Wallace (who wants to talk about "big picture stuff") and the truth about Dwight and Angela is finally revealed to Andy, which leads to a duel between the two men.

Andy comes in and asks if he can have the floor. He then expresses his concern that no one has RSVPed for the wedding yet. Awkward! Jim says it's been 17 days and Andy still doesn't know about Angela and Dwight's affair, but that he'll figure it out when his kids turn out to have giant heads and beet-stained teeth.
I love Kevin and Oscar figuring out how to leverage their knowledge of Angela's indiscretions while still keeping their little insults relevant to work. It's kind of an interesting challenge, really. Kevin: "How about, 'I'm sorry I did such a whorish job filling out this form'?"
Dwight: "Rule 17: Don't turn your back on bears, men you have wronged or the dominant turkey during mating season. There are 40 rules all Schrute boys must learn before the age of five." Then, a little song from Dwight's childhood: "Learn your rules, you better learn your rules. If you don't you'll be eaten in your sleep - arrrch!"
Michael wants Andy to know about the affair, but then he can't seem to bring himself to tell Andy until he's practically pulling out of the parking space. So he tells Andy through his car window and then quickly drives off. I liked this moment because it's so totally the way Michael would tell someone this information, but how sad is it to see the confused Andy alone in the parking lot?
Andy: "Just answer the question. Are you sleeping with Dwight?"
Angela: "A little bit."
Poor Andy. I really do feel for him.
David Wallace says that Michael's branch is doing very well and he wants to know what Michael is doing right. Michael launches into a long and convoluted sentence about nonsense, later explaining: "Sometimes I'll start a sentence and I don't even know where it's going. I just hope I find it along the way. Like an improv conversation. An improversation."
Andy: "I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for lying to my face and not telling me what's been going on this entire time."
Creed, happily: "You're welcome!" Man, Creed makes every scene just that much funnier.

Dwight and Andy decide on a duel. Andy says his weapon will be his bare hands. Dwight says that's stupid and he'll use a sword and cut off Andy's bare hands. Meredith calls dibs on the loser of the duel.
Jim goes around collecting all of Dwight's weapons from the office, including a scythe behind the copying machine. (Dwight: "How'd that get there?")
Once in the parking lot, Dwight only finds a letter from Andy attached to some bushes which includes, among other things, this line (probably my fave of the night): "The soft underbelly of my refined upbringing is my soft underbelly."
Best screaming match ever:
Dwight: "You're not a man, you don't know how to take care of her. All you do is dress fancy! And sing! Lalalalalala. What does that mean? You can't even protect her!"
Andy: "Protect her from what? Bears? You idiot! When was the last time you saw a damn bear in Scranton?"
Dwight: "Last year, idiot!"
Ha! Andy: "Go away, Tuna, I'm winning this!"
Dwight: "Sasquatch is only the strongest animal on the planet! So fine, call me a Sasquatch."
Dwight is stunned and hurt to find out that Angela had slept with Andy, too. The two men silently return to the office where Andy cancels the wedding cake (the one shaped like a sailboat) and Dwight deliberately throws his bobblehead doll of himself (which he used to use as a signal to Angela that they should meet) in the trash.
Back in New York, Michael is beaming from his meeting with David Wallace. "Just goes to show ya, leave Scranton, exciting things can happen!" This is, of course, hilarious because the Scranton office has had a pretty exciting day, too.
