Adrien Brody vs. Zachary Quinto: Who'd Be the Better Spock?

Adrien Brody recently said in an interview that he was up for the role of Spock in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movie, but ultimately he was passed up for Zachary Quinto (who plays Sylar on "Heroes").

Brody says he's disappointed to not be playing the role made classic by Leonard Nimoy. What do you think? Should he have been cast as Spock instead of Quinto?

Apparently...
Zachary Quinto, the "Heroes" villain Sylar who everyone loves to hate (or is it hates to love?), has made it clear that he would love to play Spock in JJ Abrams' Star Trek movie whenever, you know, Abrams gets around to casting that little project. A while back a few film blogs took Quinto's comment and ran with it, saying he's "definitely in negotiations!" to play the iconic role.

Now...
...it's still a rumor, but more and more sources are claiming that the negotiations are for real, and that Paramount is inching towards sealing the deal.

So what, exactly, did he say in the first place?
Quinto: "I missed the Superman Returns boat ... so I'm angling for Star Trek. People are constantly telling me I bear some resemblance to Leonard Nimoy." Wow. It must be nice to go from making that jokey comment to negotiating with Paramount for a huge role in the Star Trek movie!

If this does come to fruition, I would be thrilled. I think Quinto is a fantastic actor and could definitely do the part of Spock justice. What do you think?

14 Geeky Languages to Learn With Your Love

Love may be a universal language, but we're not sure that phrase includes the sci-fi alien races and fantastical creatures that rule the far depths of the galaxy, who express love in words beyond our human comprehension. When you're thinking of a unique way to woo your valentine this year, plan a tutorial to learn together one of these 14 geeky languages. While several of these Trekkie, Tolkien, or computer gaming-inspired languages have enough depth to warrant a university level class, many are not fully realized, so have fun discovering select words and phrases to bring to future geeky date outings.

Wookie - Made up of three dialects, the main Wookie language is Shyriiwook. As you'd expect it consists of lots of barks and grunts, but don't you dare say that to Chewbacca. The Star Wars Christmas Special has detailed examples of this mystifying tongue.
Klingon - The language of Klingons, the sometimes ally of the Federation, is arguably the best known of the imagined star languages. Described by its Hollywood creators as gutteral in tone, dedicated Trekkies maintain the Klingon Language Institue, preserving the galaxy's "fastest growing language."
Vulcan - Known as the language of Spock, one version of Vulcan looks like musical notes. Much of the language is available online today as Gene Roddenberry was insistent when making Star Trek: The Motion Picture that the Vulcans receive their own linguistic treatment.
Romulan - As biological cousins of the Vulcans, the Romulan language is difficult to differentiate from Vulcan to the untrained ear. The Central Institute of the Romulan Language ensures you get the right training to one day know the difference.
Cardassian - Residents of the Alpha Quadrant, Cardassians are a fearsome foe of the Federation. Little is known of their language, maybe because of its rectangular-shaped letters and script.
Andorian - The blue-skinned moon species from Andora appeared throughout the Star Trek series and would of course show up in the directory of a PADD.
Elvish - With a background in linguistics study from Oxford, Tolkien did not take the creation of the Lord of the Rings languages lightly. Based on Welsh and English, you can study Liv Tyler's Arwen in the film trilogy for pronunciation and read the many online Elvish resources, including an English to Elvish dictionary.
Dwarvish - Also called Khuzdul, Tolkien is said to have drawn inspiration for the secret language of the Dwarves from Hebrew, reflecting many of the same sounds and structure. As many Lord of the Rings languages, it's been almost fully realized and you can study up with the Dwarvish dictionary.

Have You Heard? Elf Ear Surgery Is the New Thing

Looking like Mr. Spock might not be every woman's goal, but for Jordan Houtz, it's a dream come true. This young woman has had surgery to make her ears look more pointed, much like an elf's or Vulcan's look. "It was just something I thought would be fascinating," she told Good Morning America.

She's certainly getting attention for this odd body modification, which is performed by people like Steve Haworth. The body modification expert creates the elfin look by severing the ear cartilage and sculpting it upward. The $600 procedure takes 20 minutes, but because Haworth isn't a doctor, he's legally not allowed to give people pain medication during the process. If the procedure goes wrong, cosmetic surgeons say, infection could destroy the entire ear within a matter of days. And if it goes right, well, hope you don't have second thoughts, because it's almost impossible to return the ear to its original shape.

Leonard Nimoy Attends His Final Star Trek Convention

Leonard Nimoy, science fiction fan favorite for his portrayal of Spock on Star Trek: The Original Series, attended his final Star Trek convention last weekend. He bid farewell to the convention circuit at a convention in suburban Chicago, which was also celebrating the 45th anniversary of Star Trek.

During the event, Leonard gave an hour-long presentation of his life and career, including his struggles to become an actor, which even included a gig as a cab driver who once had a very famous passenger - John F. Kennedy. Fellow Star Trek star Jonathan Frakes (Riker to fans), who was also on hand for the farewell, estimated Leonard has attended about 125 conventions, all to see and connect with the fans who made the space show popular.

Leonard concluded his speech by telling the audience "May each and every one of you live long and prosper" and flashing the Vulcan V sign. He'll continue to work on his other passions, including photography and the arts.

5 Must-See Events at the Las Vegas Star Trek Convention

This year marks the 45th anniversary of Star Trek, and the Las Vegas Star Trek Convention is bringing the big names from the entire series to one fan-filled location. The convention schedule can be a bit tricky to navigate, so we narrowed down the five events no Trekkie can miss once in Vegas.

Leonard Nimoy photography seminar, Friday, August 12 at 7 p.m. - The original Spock will lecture on conceptual photography, a subject he knows much about with his recent photography exhibit Secret Selves, portraits of people dressed as their fantasy personalities.
The Captains on Stage, Sunday, August 14 at 1:20 p.m. - In the main theater, former Star Trek captains Sir Patrick Stewart, William Shatner, and Kate Mulgrew will take to the main stage in front of thousands of awestruck fans.
World record of most Star Trek costumes in one place - Need to beat the current world record set by the European convention FEDCON this May of 691 costumed attendees. Saturday, August 13, at 4:15 p.m., the Star Trek Las Vegas Convention will attempt to beat the record.

I've often heard Bruno Mars's song "Lazy" on the radio, but had no idea until recently that there's an alternate video for the song starring Leonard Nimoy. The original Spock seems to be a good sport about the whole thing - wandering around in his PJs, picking his nose, buying porn mags, and flipping the bird - all while taking time off from his real-life retirement to entertain geeks everywhere. It's pretty fantastic and a nice pick-me-up for your Wednesday. Check it out below!

Now You Can Boldly Go With Star Trek Fragrances

Sometimes - when I have - had - a little too much - to DRINK - I pull out my - William Shatner impression. It's always a hit, and you know why? Because anything featuring Bill Shatner is funny. Even the word Shatner is funny. So it's no wonder that I'm getting a kick out of the forthcoming Star Trek fragrance collection. Surprisingly enough, the licensed scents aren't a tie-in to May's Star Trek movie; they're a throwback to the original TV show.

Tiberius, a cologne for men, is inspired by the Cap'n Kirk of the Mirror Universe. And Red Shirt is a fragrant homage to the tireless crew of the USS Enterprise. Pon Farr, a perfume, gets its name from a mating ritual in which frisky Vulcans go crazy in heat. (Not sure I'd want to smell like Spock when he's petting his tribble.) Trek Movie has pictures of the packaging, but you'll have to wait until spring to get your hands on the real deal. Until then, I'll continue to enjoy Shatner's singing, which you simply must experience. Do it up when you
