Announcing the 2012 Independent Spirit Award Nominees

Kate Beckinsale and Anthony Mackie were up early this morning to present the nominees for the 2012 Film Independent Spirit Awards. The Artist and Take Shelter lead the pack with five nominations apiece. Right behind it was Drive, which picked up four nods, including one for leading man Ryan Gosling. The Descendants also scored four nominations, though George Clooney was left off the list this time. Though two of our favorite movies of the year didn't pick up quite as many nods, I was happy to see that Beginners and 50/50 got some love, including nominations for best feature.

The 2012 award season is underway, and so far, there are a few sweet surprises and shocking snubs in the latest round of nominations. Ryan Gosling is getting recognition, but his Ides of March costar George Clooney was left off the Spirit Awards list. Kate Beckinsale Wears Sexy Lace to Announce the 2012 Spirit Award Nominations

Kate Beckinsale, dressed in a lace dress and nude patent Brian Atwood pumps, and Anthony Mackie joined forces this morning in LA to announce the 2011 Spirit Award nominees. The Artist and Take Shelter were the front-runners with five nominations each while Ryan Gosling's Drive was right on their heels picking up four nods. Ryan himself was recognized in the best male lead category along with Demián Bichir, Jean Dujardin, Woody Harrelson, and Michael Shannon.

Kate and Anthony aren't in the running this year, though the pair have a long list of projects due out in the upcoming months. Kate's kicking off the new year with Mark Wahlberg in Contraband, opening Jan. 13, before moving on to promote the latest installment in the Underworld franchise, Underworld Awakening. Meanwhile, Anthony's also starting 2012 with a bang when his thriller, Man on a Ledge, hits theaters on Jan. 27. Later he'll share the big screen with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in the highly anticipated Fall drama, Gangster Squad.

Little Miss Sunshine and Half Nelson Have Spirit (Awards)

The big ol' Oscars get all of the attention, but the Film Independent Spirit Awards are the a nice little antidote to all of the Academy Awards' grandness. Held on the Saturday night before the Oscars, this year's ceremony honored one major Best Picture nominee (Little Miss Sunshine) and some great little pictures that could, like Half Nelson.
