TV Tonight: The Greek Finale

We've pondered and discussed the question of who Casey should be with - Cappie or Max (or no one!) - and in tonight's finale of Greek, Casey will finally make her decision. Many of us have an assumption of who it'll be (and the clip after the jump only confirms this) so now I'm tuning in to find out how the "chosen one" will react!

Here's what else we can expect from tonight's finale: "Kappa Tau hosts an 'End of the World' party, and Casey struggles with conflicting feelings she has for Max and Cappie. Meanwhile, Ashleigh is accused of sabotaging a homecoming float, and Dale and Calvin take a purity pledge."

It'll be a bittersweet night as the season comes to a close, but thankfully we don't have long to wait until the next "chapter" begins on Monday, Aug. 31. To check out a clip from tonight's episode, in which Ashleigh has some tough-love words for Casey, read more.

Wedding Party Moments: A ZBZ Bachelorette Party on Greek

From the previews for this week's episode of Greek, it looked like Max was going to propose to Casey! If you haven't yet watched the episode, I won't say what happens, but I will say that there is a wedding on Greek - for former Zeta Beta Zeta sister Kiki, who was Frannie's big sis (so, Casey's grand-big sis, and now Jordan's great-grand-big sis). Kiki (played by Colette Wolfe, whom I've seen everywhere lately, from Observe and Report and 17 Again to a recent episode of Reaper) wants to have the wedding at CRU and she enlists the help of her old ZBZ sisters.

Included in this whirlwind wedding weekend is a bachelorette party for Kiki at Dobler's, but going through Kiki's "scavenger hunt" list ends up revealing more about Casey, Frannie and especially Rebecca than it does about Kiki. If you've seen the episode (or don't mind some spoiler-y stuff), you can check out Kiki's bachelorette party scene from Greek if you read more.

Greek's Spencer Grammer Talks About Senior Year

Big things are brewing on ABC Family's Greek, which returns with new episodes tonight. (I know, because we needed another show on Mondays.) We return to Cypress-Rhodes at the start of Casey Cartwright's senior year, after her defeat in the ZBZ election and her big Summer internship. Recently, Spencer Grammer hopped on the phone to chat about Casey's career crisis, this season's guest appearances, and boy drama. Read on for highlights:

The last season ended on a pretty big cliffhanger, and when we come back, it's the next school year. How quickly will we find out what happened right at the end of that cliffhanger?
You'll find out at the beginning of the episode - as soon as Casey gets back to Cypress-Rhodes - what's going on. And then of course there's always a twist - it's Greek. So be ready for a surprise.

And how much do we see of what happened over the Summer?
There's a little piece of it. Right at the beginning, you see the tail end of that. You start to realize what Casey's summer was really like, and it sort of changes her perspective on what this semester's going to hold for her.

Yeah, we saw a little of Casey's career drama and questions about her future in the last batch of episodes. Now that she's a senior, will that be a big part of her story?
I think that it makes Casey's year just a little bit more serious She realizes since she isn't president of the sorority like she originally thought that she was, that she is gonna buckle down and get a little bit more serious about her career and school. But whenever you have plans like that, something always comes along to change them.

Casey's been the ZBZ top dog for so long. Is it tough for her to step back and support Ashleigh now that she's president?
I think it's a little strange at first, of course, but ultimately, friendship always wins in the end. . . . I think it's a big growth thing for Casey as a character to see her change and realize that she can be supportive in a friendship even though she might not have gotten everything that she wanted.

To hear about guest stars, Casey's challenges, and boys (of course), read more.

I was actually watching some of season one a little while ago and realizing how much it seems like Casey really has changed. Season one, she didn't tell anyone she had a brother, she was maybe more questioning how secure her status on campus. How do you think she's grown?
I really think she's become more accepting - of her brother especially, and just generally being more accepting of people and realizing everyone can make mistakes and things can always change. She's learning a lot. I think there's a lot of growth that happens between her and Rebecca in the second season, so you see that relationship change also. Those are big steps to take, when you start to be able to forgive people and move forward with your life.

Is there something that's happened to Casey so far that's surprised you?
Casey sometimes lies about stuff, and that's always uncomfortable for me. Maybe by not mentioning things - but that's always a weird thing for me because I feel like honesty is such an important part of having integrity, so that's always a struggle when my character does that. She does it for selfish reasons and ultimately you have to see her grow and fail. . . . In losing the presidency, she definitely made it more about Frannie and putting her down than actually what she could do for the sorority. You have to deal with the consequences of your actions, and I think it was a big stepping stone for Casey.

Presumably we'll get some new boy twists coming up this season . . .
Of course! We always get those. We have some great guest stars too. Jesse McCartney is awesome, he's so much fun, and we also have Janeane Garofalo.

And do we see more Max?
Yes, you do. Max and Casey are still together after the summer.

And tell me about Jesse McCartney's character.
He comes on the show as a new rushee. He's like the new, hot kid on campus that all of the fraternities are trying to get to rush their fraternity.

It kind of sounds like the frat version of the Rebecca story from the beginning of Greek.
Exactly - that's exactly what it's like. And what's great about this season is you get to see Rusty being an active and his role in the fraternity and how he's trying to prove himself to everyone in the fraternity - and the same goes for Rebecca.

Are there any people on the show you get really excited to work with?
I work with almost everybody on the show, I've worked with them at least once, but I would love to do more scenes with Paul James [Calvin]. He's so much fun. I've done, like, one episode where we had maybe a couple of scenes where we talked toward each other a little bit. . . . I would love to have more scenes with him, and I would love to start working with Jake [McDorman, who plays Evan] again. I miss working with him. We don't have a lot of scenes this season, but maybe in the next cycle.

Without being too spoilery, are there particular big things that you would recommend we pay special attention to when the show comes back?
There's a lesbian storyline this season that's kind of hot and interesting, so that should be fun for everyone. It's not, like, brooding - it's the way our show is, making light of things that are controversial. I totally am excited about it.

Now that you're seniors, how much of senior year will this batch of episodes cover?
I think this goes to midway through the Fall.

So you can be a senior for a while.
Yeah, I'll be a senior for a while. It's gonna be OK.

Source

First Look: The Return of Greek

Can March 30 come a little sooner, please? That's when Greek returns to ABC Family for the second half of its second season, and I wouldn't be lying if I said it was literally marked on my calendar. There's just something about this sweet little show that always gives me a pick-me-up, so it seems appropriate that it'll be coming back just as Spring is dawning.

The mid-season finale in the Fall left the show in a crazy place, with a ton of power in the hands of Rebecca Logan. I'm curious to see what will happen with that, especially considering this big spoiler about the fate of one ZBZ sister (seriously, don't click if you don't want to know). Meanwhile, the show is plus-one in the cute factor after adding Jesse McCartney to the cast to play a freshman jock who will be hotly pursued by both Kappa Tau and Omega Chi.

Anyone else ready for all the fun to start up again? You can check out a promo and a clip from a McCartney video with even more scenes if you read more.

TV Tonight (and Today!): Greek

Oh yes, it's time. Fall is quickly approaching, schools are in session, and my beloved Greek is on the air again!

The show returns to ABC Family for its second season tonight, on a new night and time: 9 p.m., following The Secret Life of the American Teenager. Secret Life has spent the Summer pulling in the highest ratings in ABC Family's history, and I hope its popularity translates to some big numbers for Greek, which (sorry, Molly Ringwald) I think is better-written and better-acted by far.

I've seen the season premiere, and while I wouldn't dream of spoiling anything, I will say that it's a completely delightful episode that answers a few of the questions from the Spring Break-themed finale and delivers a few new cliffhangers of its own. The setting is the annual Greek Week Olympics, which brings out the competitiveness in our Cyprus-Rhodes kids: Casey sees another chance to prove she deserves to be ZBZ president for real, and Rusty and Calvin struggle to stay neutral while their houses are yet again competing against each other. But the plot summary is only the slightest hint of what makes the episode good; you'll have to catch all the one-liners and shocking moments for yourself tonight.

If you're home today and looking to catch up on Greek, you're in luck: ABC Family will be airing nine episodes from the first season back-to-back starting at 11 a.m. EDT and PDT. Meanwhile, to watch a promo, just read more.

First Look: Greek's Second Season

Is it bad that some of my favorite moments during The Secret Life of the American Teenager come when ABC Family airs the promos for the upcoming new season of Greek? I've made no secret of my love for this show, and the first season ended on such a high - and suspenseful - note that I'm more excited than ever for it to return this month.

Could my ever-growing Greek obsession have anything to do with the news that Lauren Conrad's joining the show for an episode, or the fact that the cast was absolutely adorable partying together each other at the TCA press tour? Possibly. But mostly I just think Greek has a lot going for it: a great mix of humor, drama, self-awareness, and on-point pop culture references deployed at exactly the right moments. I can't remember the last time I got invested in a show so fully and so fast - and I watch a lot of TV.

Plus, this is just a great promo. There are boys in cheerleading skirts. There are hugs and tears. And there's a boy - but who? - opening the door at the end for one very nervous-looking Casey. Anyone else have a big circle around Aug. 26 on your calendar? To watch the promo, just read more.

Lauren Conrad to Play Casey's "Spiritual Adviser" on Greek

Lauren Conrad, spiritual guru? Maybe in your dreams . . . if you're Greek's Casey Cartwright, anyway. Conrad will be guest-starring in the second-season finale of the ABC Family show, playing herself in a dream sequence when Spencer Grammer's character asks for help with a big decision.

Hmmm . . . could this cameo have anything to do with LC telling us she'd just started watching Greek? Oh, to have that kind of power . . .

Anyway, the scene sounds pretty awesome. As Greek creator Sean Smith told Michael Ausiello: "It's a dream sequence in which Casey and LC are best friends," with a feeling like "when Frankie Avalon is telling Frenchie what do to in Grease. Casey holds LC in that high esteem."

Hey, who hasn't, at least briefly, thought it might actually be sort of cool to be friends with LC? Her episode is scheduled to air as the season finale on Oct. 28. Greek begins its second season on Aug. 26, and believe me, my calendar is already marked. You?

TV Tonight: The Greek Finale

OK, confession time: Greek has gone from a guilty pleasure of mine to something bordering on obsession. I love to hate (and not just sort of dislike, but hate) Rebecca, I'm wary of Frannie, I love-love-love Ashleigh and I get a kick out of every time Casey goes "Yay!" in that forced-enthusiasm way she has. I have a huge crush on Cappie (while also understanding the frustrations of actually dating guys like him), I think Evan is smug and manipulative, Rusty is endearing and Dale is hands-down one of the funniest and most well-realized characters on TV right now. Finally, I love that ABC Family features a gay character - a gay frat boy, no less - and actually gives Calvin some meaty storylines (as opposed to watering him down to a depressing stereotype). I genuinely crave Greek episodes. It's entirely possible that I will TiVo tonight's episode and watch a few minutes per day this week, just to make it last. See what I mean about obsession? Right. Moving on. . .

You might've guessed that I'm saddened by tonight's season finale. Titled "Spring Broke," the synopsis is as follows: "The gang hits the beach for Spring break! Casey leaves all her emotional baggage back at school for some fun in the sun. While Rusty realizes that the beach bum lifestyle isn't for him and reunites with old friends on his way back to CRU."

Are you as hooked on this show as I am? Maybe just a little bit? To check out a featurette with the adorable Amber Stevens (who plays Ashleigh) giving a tour of the Spring break beach set, as well as see a preview of the episode, just read more.

Why I Love . . . Greek

I've already admitted Greek is a guilty pleasure of mine, and many of you also came out and admitted that you too love this show. That got me thinking: What is it about this ABC Family series that is so addicting?

After all, Greek has some cheesy and predictable plot lines, is asking me to care about beautiful young people whose biggest concerns include smuggling beer into parties, and concludes most episodes with some tidy lessons about friendship, life, and college. Why are grown-ups like me drawn to a khaki-filled, cutesy show clearly aimed at the young'ns?

The folks behind the show must know they have some older fans, because they slip in some great little references designed to appeal to those of us who can drink legally. It's like making Spencer Grammer's character, Casey, a big fan of Frasier, or quick little lines like when a sorority girl told the Dean (played by Alan Ruck) that she thought Ferris Bueller's Day Off was like the Great Gatsby for a new generation - a joke that works best when you know Ruck played Bueller's best friend. But there's more to it than just its pop-culture cred. While the kids of Greek look like college students and concern themselves with sorority sister problems, they're acting out scenarios familiar to the adult world. To see why I think some primetime adult shows could stand to take notice, just read more.

The Greeks of Greek are, for the most part, a far cry from the hard-partying youth of Animal House. The elite frats and sororities in the fictional Cyprus-Rhodes University are mini-training grounds for the best and brightest to secure themselves a place in the boardrooms and capital buildings of America. It's a high-stakes world where power changes hands on a regular basis, and by the time you might begin to wonder why you care if Casey will become Zeta Beta Zeta president, it's too late. You care - and you're on the edge of your seat.

The already likable, well-thought-out characters are made even more appealing by the show's often hilarious and clever dialogue (one department where many network series could use some help). Clark Duke, for example, is hysterical as a nerdy, Confederate Flag-loving Baptist who fronts a band called Darwin Lied. He could be the least-tolerant of the bunch, but he often comes out seeming the most compassionate. And I don't care how old or cool you are: No one is safe from Cappie (Scott Michael Foster) and his free-wheeling, movie-quoting charms.

When I think about how easy the Greek writers make creating genuine and believable (OK, a little cheesy, but still believable) friendships and motives for the characters look, it makes me wonder why the same can't be done for grown-up entertainment like Lipstick Jungle or Cashmere Mafia, which so often seem to be shoehorning their characters into situations that simply make no sense. Greek just gets it right.

And besides: When you give the actress who launched to stardom via her YouTube series Lonelygirl15 lines to the effect of "My roommate is an agoraphobe and never leaves our room. She's like, Lonelygirl15" . . . well, I'm sold.

Source
