Solange Knowles, Kat Graham, and More Rock SXSW Looks to Inspire Music Festival Style

Now that SXSW has wrapped, we can take a closer look at the boho-cool style to emerge from the plethora of showcases, blowout concerts, and interactive panels. While Coachella may be known for its Indio heat-soaked, hippie-inspired fashion, and Bonnaroo is notorious for Woodstock-esque wares, Austin's week-long festival presents an interesting mix of freespirited prints and urban-chic pairings. This year, The Vampire Diaries Kat Graham and UK sensation Cher Lloyd donned '90s influenced pieces - think flannel, ripped up denim, and Madonna-esque crop tops, while Solange Knowles opted for a bright iteration of sleek colorblocking. Santigold kept it funky in striped jeans and a tuxedo blazer, Kreayshawn embraced her grungier Kurt Cobain side, and Kimbra played up the sweetness of a Peter Pan collar. Would You Want to Attend a Film Festival?

It used to be that Cannes or Sundance were the main film festivals you always heard about (I'm going to the latter later this month, so check back for my coverage of that). But nowadays, the market is expanding. Even music showcase South by Southwest has been getting in on the act in recent years by adding movies to its lineup.

Just today SXSW began announcing some of this year's flicks, and the opening night debut is none other than fanboy favorite Kick-Ass. Also on the list? A documentary by James Franco titled Saturday Night about the making of an episode of Saturday Night Live (hmm . . . yet another curious gig for the actor). Bottom line, these aren't just films with unknowns, which makes me think even more folks will flock to check them out.

What about you? If you're a movie addict, then chances are you'd jump at the chance to watch new films for days on end. Or maybe that sounds like overload, and you'd rather just wait for the best of the bunch to hit regular theaters (or maybe a fest is just too pricey!). So I'm curious - are you interested in going to film festivals?

This Year's SXSW Film Lineup Looks Awesome, Y'all

After seeing the just-announced lineup of films showing at the South by Southwest festival this year, I'm salivating. There are some movies premiering at SXSW that I've been patiently awaiting for what feels like forever, like Run, Fat Boy, Run with Simon Pegg and Hank Azaria. Then there are others that I'd just love to see before they are actually released, like Forgetting Sarah Marshall (later opening April 18), the Kevin Spacey casino movie 21 (opening March 28) and Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (April 25).

What's really putting me over the edge is that there are Sundance titles here that I never got into and desperately wanted to see, like the adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's Choke, the high school noir film The Assassination of a High School President and the documentary Young@Heart.

The festival takes place March 7-15 in Austin, Texas. What about you? Do you live close enough - or are you willing to make a trek - to see some of these films at SXSW? And are you chomping at the bit as much as I am?

2007 SXSW: A Festival in Photos

Most of us weren't lucky enough to get down to Austin for Southwest by Southwest, but that doesn't mean we can't relive the experience through good music and very cool photos. (Combine the two, and it's almost like being at a concert!)

Looking through some of the best shots from SXSW, I was struck by what a British Invasion there was this year, from keynote speaker Pete Townsend to much-discussed performances by Lily Allen, Bloc Party, Amy Winehouse, and The Pipettes (above). 2007 SXSW Music Fest: I'm Already Overwhelmed

I'm not even in Austin for the South by Southwest Music Festival this year (but oh how I wish I were), and I'm still overwhelmed by the surplus of amazing bands taking the stage at any given moment.

Today marks the kickoff of the music (and most major) portion of this multimedia bonanza, which is known for breaking new indie acts. On day one alone, there'll be performances by Cyann & Ben, Rosie Thomas, Loney Dear, The Mountain Goats, Blonde Redhead, The Pipettes, The Rapture, and Peter Bjorn & John. Whoa. Then, of course, there is everything else, including the Iggy and the Stooges reunion and hotly anticipated performances from Mika and Amy Winehouse.

But don't worry: There are plenty of ways to get a handle on this musical madness, so

SXSW is offering a downloadable "torrent" of MP3s from hundreds of festival artists.
Rolling Stone has rounded up its 10 can't miss shows for 2007.
If you're a DirecTV subscriber, you can watch many of the performances in your living room.

The Springfields of the United States will battle for the right to hold The Simpsons Movie premiere, according to the Associated Press.
Piz - er, Chris Lowell from "Veronica Mars" - has been cast in the "Grey's Anatomy" spinoff, TV Guide reports.
Genesis will kick off their first tour in 15 years in September, says Variety.

The South by Southwest independent film festival kicked off on Friday in Austin, Texas, says the Hollywood Reporter.
The AP reports that John Mayer has joined the lineup of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Yeah, "Your Body is a Wonderland" totally swings.

will.i.am of Black Eyed Peas will help Michael Jackson with his comeback album, tentatively due by the end of 2007, says Billboard.

Meet This Year's James Beard Award Winners

The time has finally arrived: the James Beard Awards, or the Oscars of the food world, have just been announced. After months of suspense following the announcement of this year's semifinalists and subsequent finalists, the results were announced at a star-studded gala in New York's Lincoln Center, where a smattering of top talent from Grant Achatz to Top Chef winner Paul Qui walked home with medals.

For the first time ever, there was an Outstanding Bar Program award, and it went to Jim Meehan, owner and bar manager at PDT in New York City. Other highlights? Eleven Madison Park's Daniel Humm nabbed top prize for Outstanding Chef; Wolfgang Puck spoke at length as he accepted a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Christina Tosi of Momofuku Milk Bar fame took home title of Rising Star Chef; the pastry wunderkind declared that if she could cook anything for James Beard, it would be turkey pot pie. Read ahead to see the full list of 2012 James Beard Award winners.
