What to Download: New Music on iTunes

Tuesdays are big in entertainmentville: Not only do all the new DVD releases hit Netflix, but new music also pours into stores, including iTunes. So I take a spin through each week's iTunes music releases and pick out some albums and tracks worthy of a download. Here are today's selections:

Not just Beyonce's little sister anymore: I posted the video for Solange Knowles's single "I Decided" a while back and now the entire album is available. This new album blends classic Motown melodies with elements that are little more far-out and groovy. I've already purchased "Would've Been the One" and "Sandcastle Disco." It's only on slower tracks that the album gets weak - the funky tempos, not her voice, make this album shine.

A sparkling duet: Remember when I told you about that really cute duet called "You Don't Know Me" by Regina Spektor and Ben Folds that's from his upcoming album? Well, now it's available on iTunes and remains extremely cute! Hurry up and get it while it's hot!

Oldie but a goodie: The members of The Verve have not made an album together for almost a decade, so it's pretty cool for fans that there is now a whole new album full of very Verve-ish songs. The track "Judas" is great and "Love Is Noise" is addictive and wonderful. A pretty great reunion album as far as I can tell!
Politically correct: As the campaign season truly kicks off this week with the Democratic National Convention in Denver, not only do we get to learn more about the candidates' positions but, apparently, we also get great new music. You may have caught John Legend's performance of "If You're Out There" last night, and it's available on iTunes as well. Music Video: Solange Knowles's "I Decided"

There has been a spate of pseudo-celebs releasing their "singles" and "videos" onto the Web, like the recent one from Lindsay's little sister Ali Lohan. I've felt a little barraged with these "songs" because they're pretty lame - over-produced, unoriginal, etc. The videos are often worse. If they're not rolling around a beach in their bikini they're gyrating in a club and the whole production is basically strobe lights and sweaty mid-sections.

So I was so happy when I finally caught the video for Beyonce's sister Solange Knowles's song "I Decided" on TV because it is so good. Visually, it's totally absorbing with all the beautiful colors and retro images taking us through the Motown era right up until the '90's. The song itself is catchy and different - blending current R&B beats with something a little doo-wop.

Check it out for yourself and let me know if this is one famous sibling who actually has some talent and perhaps even an artistic point of view (instead of just a reality TV show and/or famous DNA). To watch,

Cute Alert! Solange Knowles Makes Green and Coral Work

At yesterday's Elle's Women in Music Event, Solange Knowles looked radiant in bright, multidimensional eye makeup that she paired with a bold coral hue on the lips. It's a stunning color combination that's seasonally appropriate, especially when topped off with a floppy hat. Scarlett Johansson Brings Her Brother to Back Obama With Anna Wintour

Scarlett Johansson cohosted an Obama fundraiser in NYC last night with Vogue editor Anna Wintour. The "Runway to Win" event was held at a Theory store, and instead of new boyfriend Nate Naylor, Scarlett brought along her brother Hunter. Anna and Scarlett gathered a large group of fashionable New Yorkers, like models Karolina Kurkova, Chanel Iman, Karlie Kloss, and Joan Smalls. Designer Rachel Roy was also in attendance, as was Solange Knowles.

Both Anna and Scarlett are longtime Democratic activists and donors. Anna, in particular, has been identified as one of Obama's top "bundlers" for her ability to get the president's reelection campaign a great deal of funding. Yesterday's gathering was unique, however. Twenty-three top fashion designers, including Tory Burch, Diane von Furstenberg, Marc Jacobs, Narciso Rodriguez, and even Beyoncé Knowles, customized gear that supporters could purchase, with proceedings benefiting Obama 2012. Beyoncé herself swung by after seeing Jay-Z's second Carnegie Hall show. Scarlett spoke of the importance of "Runway to Win", commenting, "I think the most important thing is that the fashion world has an international spotlight shown on it. To be able to use that spotlight on a cause like this is incredible."

Carol's Daughter Launches Multiracial Ad Campaign

In developing its new promotional approach, Carol's Daughter took a look at the latest US Census data, which reveal that more people are checking the "other" box (or multiple boxes) when it comes to race. To reflect the diversity of the population, the beauty brand has launched a polyethnic campaign. "When I say polyethnic, I mean women who are made up of several ethnicities," the brand's Steve Stoute told WWD. "If you ask them what they are, they're going to use a lot of different words to describe themselves."

The new campaign will feature Selita Ebanks, who is of African, Indian, Irish, and Jamaican heritage; Solange Knowles, who is of African-American and French Creole descent; and Cassie, who is of Filipina and black ancestry. "Today, people are blended, and I think the three of us are a prime example," Selita explained. "Women in my family range from vanilla to the deepest chocolate."

Expect to see the models' ads out in June, along with a complete repackaging of the line rolling out by next year. Also, Mary J. Blige, who enjoyed much success with her Carol's Daughter-aligned My Life fragrance, is set to follow up with a flanker scent, My Life Blossom, slated for an August release.

Beyoncé Has a Ladies-Only Valentine's Day Lunch

Beyoncé Knowles celebrated Valentine's Day yesterday out at brunch in LA with her sister, Solange, and her former Destiny's Child bandmate Kelly Rowland. Their meal was also a belated birthday celebration for Kelly, who reached the big milestone of 30 on the 11th. It was Beyoncé's latest instance of supporting the women closest to her, after she attended Sunday's Grammys and cheered on her pal Gwyneth Paltrow during her performance with Cee-Lo Green. Cee-Lo's stylist spoke about Beyoncé being in the wings to root for Gwyneth, saying the ladies hugged afterward just offstage! The good times continued for Beyoncé following the show, as she was among those who got to see Lady Gaga perform at a post-show party along with her husband Jay-Z.

We've had Solange Knowles's downtown-cool style on our radar for a while now, but the look she wore while attending an Opening Ceremony event in NYC totally solidified our style crush. She dressed up a plain strappy white tank by tucking it into a pair of bright red, floral-printed pants - and kept the focus on her fun bottoms by choosing a pair of nude lace-up heels. Beyoncé and Solange Take Their Sister Act Front Row at Fashion Week

Beyoncé Knowles attended the J.Crew presentation this morning during Fashion Week with her sister, Solange Knowles, before heading to Vera Wang and Rodarte shows. The sisters struck a pose at Lincoln Center as Beyoncé showed off her growing baby bump in a shimmery, gold dress. The superstar, who's expecting her first baby, looked radiant during the stylish festivities today. Beyoncé was without husband Jay-Z as she took a look at some of the latest womenswear, but the pair were together recently for a couple's brunch and the US Open. Jay and B headed back home to the Big Apple last week after a trip to Croatia and Venice in celebration of Beyoncé's 30th birthday, during which they caught up with good friends like Erykah Badu and Gwyneth Paltrow and enjoyed some time yachting on the water.
