Coming Soon: Too Faced Smurfs It Up

Retro cartoons are increasingly popular within the makeup world - just witness the buzz around the forthcoming Hello Kitty collection for MAC. With its launch of a Smurfette collection, Too Faced is hoping to delight fans of the Smurfs before the live-action movie wraps up. WWD reports that the Too Faced collection will feature face powder, eye shadow, lip gloss, and liquid eyeliners. The items, heavy on blues, pinks, and lavenders, will land in stores later this month.

This might be smurfy news for some, but I'm going to pass on this collaboration. Even as a kid, I thought the story of Smurfette's genesis is as sexist as they come: Gargamel creates Smurfette to seduce and destroy the all-male Smurf clan. Alas, her dark hair, "big nose" and simple smock are not pretty enough to do so. Papa Smurf comes along, works his magic, and poof! Smurfette is, as Papa says, "new and improved" with long blond hair, a smaller nose, a shorter dress, and high heels. So, while it's just a cartoon and the Too Faced collaboration is meant to be fun, it's safe to say that Smurfette and I have some baggage to work through.

Smurfs Movie to Be CGI and Live-Action, Like Chipmunks

We've seen the very early basic designs for the CGI (and possibly 3-D) Smurfs movie, and today there's news that Sony has snatched up the film rights, and they plan to make it just like last year's Alvin and the Chipmunks movie - with live-action actors alongside the animated blue guys (and gal). Variety continues:

[Producer Jordan] Kerner said the genesis of the current project began during a holiday conversation with Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman-CEO Michael Lynton, who grew up with Les Schtroumpfs in the Netherlands. "He relished them as I do and suggested that it should be a live-action/CG film," he said. "(Studio topper) Amy (Pascal) felt equally that there was potentially a series of films in the making."

"The Smurfs are one of the best-known franchises, and among the most beloved collection of characters in the world," Columbia co-president Doug Belgrad said. "We're very excited to introduce a new generation to Papa Smurf, Smurfette and the other smurftastic Smurfs in all of their 'three-apple-tall' glory."

I don't know about you, but I might just pretend this isn't happening, until it does. In the meantime, the Smurfs' official website is actually really cute and informative, and there's a fun section devoted to the Smurfs' 50th anniversary - which is October 23 of this year!

Happy Hour: Smurfette

The Smurfs are turning 50 this year, and to celebrate, Stirrings - maker of my favorite on-the-go drink mixers - has created a specialty cocktail. While the classic cartoon characters were blue, the drink has a pretty burgundy color.

A combination of orange-flavored vodka and wild blueberry juice, the Smurfette is one potent cocktail. If you loved the Smurfs as a child, you will surely enjoy this cocktail as an adult.

Which Cartoon Family Best Suits Your Own?

When I lived with three roommates in close quarters, we used to compare ourselves to the Golden Girls. I was Dorothy. Now I think I relate more to The Flintstones with my husband calling my name in the "WILMAAAAA" fashion and my babe banging her fork and spoon on the table.

Are You Interested in Seeing a Modern Smurfs Movie?

Check out this very early peek at the 3-D computer-animated Smurfs movie, which recently surfaced over on ComingSoon. Even more than the Alvin and the Chipmunks movie, I'm not sure how to feel about a modern remake of the old animated series.

The Smurfs Trailer: Ready or Not, Here They Come

The first full-length trailer for The Smurfs is reminiscent of other cartoons-gone-live-action, like Alvin and the Chipmunks - and I don't mean that in a good way. Neil Patrick Harris and Glee's Jayma Mays star as the couple who accidentally happens upon the tiny blue creatures when they escape from their village and end up in New York City.

The smurfs are voiced by Katy Perry, George Lopez, and Alan Cumming to name a few, and as expected, there's no shortage of using the word "smurf" as a substitute for just about anything near a swear (the movie's tagline is "where the smurf are we?"). I will say, though, that I got a kick out of seeing Hank Azaria all dressed up as Gargamel. Even if it's a far cry from the cartoon we grew up with, I have a feeling that kids will get a big kick out of this one when it's released in August. Watch the trailer for yourself when you

If you were a child of the '80s, you likely spent Saturday mornings with The Smurfs while scarfing a heaping bowl of Smurf-Berry Crunch. But even if you aren't too familiar with small blue creatures that dominated television screens during the Reagan era, you're about to be.

Katy Perry Nails a Smurf Manicure

Thought Katy Perry might forget about her love of nail art with all the hair dying she's been doing? That's not Mrs. Russell Brand's style. Last night, she tweeted a photo of her nails with this holographic Smurf manicure. They look like they may be artificial nails, and it was for the premiere of The Smurfs, so it wasn't exactly out of the blue (ha ha). Regardless, Katy certainly hasn't lost her sense of adventure.
