Sleepless in Seattle to Become Broadway Musical

"Horses, horses, horses, horses. . . ."

I hope one of the songs in the Sleepless in Seattle Broadway musical begins like that, patterned after Meg Ryan's little moment singing along to the holiday tune in her car. According to Variety, the script for Sleepless in Seattle - The Musical is about half finished, and about 18 songs have been written. The article notes, "Sticking to plot of the Sleepless pic, the new tuner follows a cross-country romance arranged by a young boy for his widowed father. Storyline will remain set in the early 1990s."

I'm glad to hear that, since I think part of the movie's greatness is that it's so quintessentially '90s - back before Internet dating made it not so unusual at all to find love 3,000 miles away (actually, before the Internet made it much easier to find people in general) and before acronyms (like Jessica's MFEO = Made For Each Other) were commonly used as text message communication. I'm not going to lie, I'll probably see this production, just to find out how on earth they do it.

The Results Are In: Recast Sleepless in Seattle

As for the recast lists themselves, this week posed a serious challenge in choosing just one list as the winner. Most of all, I loved so many of the Sam-Annie pairings. Some of my favorites include Mari_Sofi's idea of Hugh Jackman and Elizabeth Banks, sweetrae80's adorable suggestion of James McAvoy and Jenna Fischer, jopperma's pairing of James Marsden with Keri Russell, cleegiants' coupling of Matthew Perry and Lauren Graham and the Lee Pace-Jennifer Garner combo that sfmastiffmom suggested.

There were many great Becky ideas as well, like ChrissyBaby's Leah Remini (perfect!), alethe16's idea to cast Angela Kinsey and supertramp's suggestion of Melissa McCarthy (Sookie is ever the best best friend!). Finally, I have to say I loved the suggestion of Sarah Chalke playing Annie, as put forth by leeluvfashion. Such great ideas!

Recast Sleepless in Seattle and Win a Prize!

I hope you're in a romantic mood because this week I've set my sights on a great romcom: Sleepless in Seattle. The movie was, as you probably remember, a big hit featuring box office stars Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks (who managed to have a lot of chemistry despite spending about five minutes on screen together). I have a special place in my heart for this movie and for the film's writer/director Nora Ephron.

If you could recast this film today, who would you pick for the two romantic leads? Remember, Tom Hanks' widowed character Sam Baldwin is old enough to have a school-aged son and Meg Ryan's Annie Reed is an accomplished journalist engaged to be married. Who would be Annie's quick-witted BFF Becky, originally played by Rosie O'Donnell? And then there are the two little ones: What little boy could you see as Sam's son Jonah and his acronym-slinging pal Jessica, played by Gabby Hoffmann? If you'd like to recast Annie's nerdy fiance Walter (Bill Pullman), as well as Sam's best friends Greg (Victor Garber) and Suzy (Rita Wilson), go for it.

How to Be Romantic If You Can't Get Away

Tight on time or money? You can still fit some romance into your Summer itinerary. It's amazing to look forward to a one-on-one trip out of town with your significant other, but there are plenty of travel-free ways to escape everyday life together and make meaningful memories. You can plan for a special meal in or out, or take advantage of the sentimental offerings of your own town or city. Here are more specific ideas to help you feel the excitement of escape without ever leaving home.

Plan a fancy dinner out. Without waiting for a special occasion like a birthday or an anniversary, make a reservation at one of the best restaurants you can afford at least a few weeks in advance. The intimate dining experience will give you something to look forward to, and you can count down the days just like you would for a vacation.

Play hooky together. It might be impossible to fly away to Hawaii or Paris, but you can still enjoy some time off from work together. Schedule a vacation day and spend it sleeping in and cuddling, lounging on the couch in your PJs, or picnicking in the park. Promise each other you won't do your laundry, clean the house, or worry about any errands that normally take up your free time.

Get nostalgic. To feel like young kids in love, grab a chocolate-dipped ice cream cone and enjoy it hand in hand, head to a bowling alley for some friendly competition, or pack a blanket and catch a drive-in movie. The old-fashioned fun will likely put you in a flirty mood.

Do something new in your town. Pretend you're a tourist in your own city, and do what a couple on a romantic vacation would do if they were visiting your hometown. If you're in San Francisco, walk across the Golden Gate Bridge, or in New York promise to meet each other at the top of the Empire State building after work à la An Affair to Remember and Sleepless in Seattle. As a local you may sometimes scoff at tourists participating in clichéd activities, but playing romantic traveler for a day can fill your Summer quotient of unabashed love. And exploring a part of town you've never seen can give you the feeling you've traveled far away.

Cook a special dinner at home inspired by your last romantic vacation. Did you bond over a mutual love of paella on your last trip to Spain or fall for gumbo on a weekend away in New Orleans? Plan a night in with each other based on your last vacation or the destination you're dying to explore together with a menu to match. From a local cocktail to a traditional dessert, there are plenty of ways to experience a different place and culture together from the comfort of your own kitchen.
