Buzz Gift Guide: Pop Culture T-Shirts For the Ladies

Welcome back to my Buzz Gift Guide series for all the entertainment lovers in your life. This week is all about gifting your peers. Yesterday I suggested some gifts for the Sex and the City fan, and today I've rounded up a few of those gifts that keep on giving: TV- and movie-themed t-shirts.

I like wearing shirts with funny TV and movie lines on them because people are either like, "Ha! Yeah!" or "What is that from?" If it's the former, you've identified a fellow fan and if it's the latter, you've started a conversation about one of your favorite shows/movies. It's win-win, really.

Got an '80s movie fan in your circle of friends? Check out these t-shirts inspired by Dirty Dancing and Sixteen Candles. Here's a Twilight-inspired t-shirt for anyone you know who's into the movie or the book series (it cracked me up, anyway). Buzz In: Who Are the Meanest Teens to Ever Hit the Screen?

Lately there's been a glut of wholesome, good-natured teens (see Jonas Brothers, High School Musical, and Vanessa Hudgens's snuggly ode to sneakers). But this week's release of the 20th anniversary of the classic Heathers reminded me that onscreen teenagers can be really mean. Actually, they can be downright vicious.

The girl group in Heathers was so mean they were essentially psychopathic. And then there's the famous pack of mean teens that torments Lindsay Lohan in Tina Fey's Mean Girls. Rich girl Caroline Mulford in Sixteen Candles is incredibly cruel (well, until she spends an evening with the geeky Farmer Ted). And of course, they're not always girls: Ryan Phillippe's character in Cruel Intentions is about as scummy as it gets in terms of douchebag teen guys.

Clear your mind of Disney stars and tell me about the most memorable nasty onscreen teens.

Buzz In: How Has John Hughes Influenced You?

John Hughes' work is so far-reaching, he is still making news today despite having quit directing in 1991. The L.A. Times recently ran a story in which some of the most popular directors and actors today point to movies like Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, and The Breakfast Club as movies that made an impact on them as artists.

A ton of Hughes nostalgia has been popping up online lately, like this interview with Jon Cryer EW dug up in which he stated:

John had a real need to believe in teenage icons and create teenage iconography - that's what he was doing with Breakfast Club. I think he was really tortured in his high school, and [movies] were a way of him psychologically coming to terms with his youth and sort of reordering it in his mind as a storyteller. I think kids will always latch on to people saying, "Your experience is important. What you're going through right now is not trivial. We care about it, and we're right there with ya."

Which Do You Prefer: Sixteen Candles or Pretty in Pink?

There have been some pretty classic showdowns in my day - Bush vs. Gore, Jordin vs. Blake, Stewart vs. Colbert. But none have quite compared to this. Entertainment Weekly's Dalton Ross is taking on the crucial question for all fans of '80s teen comedies: Which is better: Pretty in Pink or Sixteen Candles?

In the mind of Ross, the answer's simple: Sixteen Candles wins hands-down, largely on the strengths of Jake Ryan, Anthony Michael Hall, and "that freaky dwarf lady from Poltergeist." But he also believes that guys drift toward the goofiness of Sixteen Candles, while women prefer the more romantic Pretty in Pink.

So, dear Buzz readers, where do you fall on this weighty question? And no, both is not an option. What, you thought I was going to make this easy for you?

The Results Are In: Recast Sixteen Candles

Every Wednesday on BuzzSugar, I post a Recast challenge, where I ask you to choose new actors for a classic TV show or movie. The reader who submits the best cast wins a BuzzSugar t-shirt!

For this week's recast challenge, I was surprised and impressed by your ideas for the part of Sam Baker in Sixteen Candles, a part Molly Ringwald made legendary. In particular I loved maeve's suggestion of Sarah Drew who played the lovably nerdy Hannah on "Everwood." I also liked tdamji's idea of Isla Fisher and nycpogo's suggestion of Allison Mack. As for Ginny, I could definitely see Anna Faris doing well in that part, as posited by HellooQueen, and I also thought Kristen Bell would be funny, as suggested by girlnone. Finally, I think total's idea of James Franco as Jake Ryan is a great one.

Well, we've recast The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink, so now it's time for the third of my favorite John Hughes movies: Sixteen Candles.

Sure, looking at this movie now there are some things that now don't seem quite right (Ted having sex with Caroline while she's passed out, say). But I still have a soft spot in my heart for this iconic '80s teenage romantic comedy.
