First Look: Single With Parents Starring Alyssa Milano

Like Castle, Alyssa Milano's Single With Parents is another of ABC's growing roster of midseason shows. This one stars Milano as Lou, a single woman in her 30s who finds herself being the dumping ground for her parents' wild behavior and irresponsibility. They seem to be the ones off living fabulous lives while she stays behind to watch after their kids or hears their stories about having sex in a helicopter.

There have been a lot of young-slackers-behaving-badly comedies over the past few years, so it's kind of refreshing to have a show in the mix where the adults are the ones acting silly. And if I were going to choose people to play parents living life with reckless abandon, I could do a whole lot worse than Beau Bridges and Annie Potts. The trailer didn't exactly win me over, though, and it felt way longer than its 100 seconds, which can't be a good thing.

There are some awkwardly funny moments here, though, so I'll be curious to see how this one develops. To check out the trailer, just

ABC Picks Up Five Shows for Midseason

The Fall TV season hasn't even started yet, and already, at least one network is looking a few months ahead. ABC, which only has one new scripted show (Life on Mars) on its Fall schedule, has picked up three dramas and two comedies for midseason.

Among them: Rob Thomas's Cupid, his remake of his own 1998 show, which now stars Sarah Paulson and Bobby Cannavale (at right). I've been curious about that project for a while now, so I'm glad it's taken the next step toward becoming a series.

The other dramas:

Castle - Starring Nathan Fillion, the show focuses on a horror novelist who helps the NYPD solve crimes.
The Unusuals - Starring Amber Tamblyn, this one's described as an "ensemble dramedy" set in a police precinct.

Better Off Ted - Jay Harrington stars as a moral man trying to do the right thing in this office-set show.
Single with Parents - This comedy from How I Met Your Mother producer Kristin Newman stars Alyssa Milano as a woman juggling a dysfunctional family.

ABC Entertainment President Steve McPherson hinted to the Hollywood Reporter that some of ABC's other pilots might be getting the go-ahead later on. The network still has Captain Cook's Extraordinary Atlas starring Janel Moloney and Rob Thomas's other pilot, Good Behavior, as well as the Alicia Silverstone/Alia Shawkat comedy Bad Mother's Handbook, as possibilities. In Defense of the Chronically Late Mom

T for tardy. T for turd ball. T for totally inept mother.

We are late for school with such alarming regularity it’s embarrassing. The last time we were on time, after a mini snowstorm that excited my children enough to urge them into their snowsuits and outside at 6:30 a.m., we got to school five minutes early to find it dark and empty. Delayed opening. I was apparently the only mother who didn’t get the memo.

Being late for school brings up a vicious brew of conflicting emotion in me. On the one hand I just don’t care. Life is short. Far too short to risk traumatizing your children with a bullwhip and terrorizing morning walkers and squirrels, not to mention my own white-knuckled children, speeding our way to school like Toad on a motorcar bender each weekday morning.

On the other hand I am ashamed, deeply embarrassed, to be “that mom.” All the other moms can do it, even the single ones. Why. Can’t. I? What’s wrong with me?

I complained about this once to a woman from South Carolina who I met on my Guatemala trip and she told me her school started at 7:30. She also made it clear her kids were never late.

Never late.

Gwen, Gavin, Zuma, and Kingston Split Their Weekend Between Parties and the Park

The Stefani-Rossdale family kept to a busy schedule this weekend with plenty of time allotted for outdoor activities. Gwen and Gavin took their sons, Kingston and Zuma, to a birthday party on Saturday. Yesterday they all went to the Malibu Country Mart to check out the playground, and later visited the Troutdale ponds for some fishing. The superstar parents have spent most of the new year close to home while Gwen keeps working on new music with No Doubt, and Gavin enjoyed a short break from touring. He resumes playing hits from Bush's new album, The Sea of Memories, this Friday when the band stops by The Tonight Show to perform their latest single, Baby Come Home. Gavin resumes touring next month on Feb. 14 in Taipei, Taiwan, while Gwen could be planning a trip to the Big Apple for this year's Fashion Week. The Fall L.A.M.B. collection is schedule to hit the catwalk on Feb. 11, however, last season Gwen missed the show due to studio and family commitments on the West Coast.

Cloth Diapers? Not For This Mama!

I use disposables. I believe they are easier, more convenient, faster and more hygienic than cloth. I like using them – at least, I like them as much as a parent can like a diaper. I have never considering changing. I have never tried cloth. Why would I?

My husband and I had one conversation about cloth vs disposable, three years ago before our daughter was born. It went as follows:

Me: (opening discussion by using the universal family signal: pressing mute on the TV remote) Honey, have you ever thought about cloth diapers?

Him: What?!? What are you talking about?

Me: You know, diapers that you wash after each use instead of throw out.

Him: (look of total confusion on his face) You wash them? Like in the washing machine? All that poo, in the washing machine?

Me: (nodding without enthusiasm) Yeah.

Him: Why would we do that?

Me: (puzzled) Um, I’m not sure.

Him: Well, there you have it. (grabs remote and unpresses mute)

A splinter of doubt needled me after I wrote my last post. In the post, I explained how it is possible to pull onesies down after poo explosions. On his VH1 show Tough Love Miami, Steve takes a no-nonsense approach when it comes to helping women find true love. He sets up a "dating boot camp," designed to break down the women's barriers about love. Steve sets the girls up on dates to see where they need real help and find them the man they've been looking for. Steve's brand of tough love may seem a little brutal, but each week that I'm glued to the screen, I find that the girls are experiencing real progress. Here are 10 solid pieces of tough love from the man behind Tough Love Miami, Steve Ward.

"When it comes to letting a guy know you're interested, it's not just what you say, but how you say it. Or show it." Body language and nonverbal communication are just as important as what comes out of your mouth. It's important to be conscious of the vibe you're putting out from the way you carry yourself.
"There's flirting. And then there's moving way too fast." There's no reason to come out guns blazing if you have any sort of attraction for a man. Take things slow. Try your best to have an objective eye. Let things happen naturally, and don't lead someone on just for the hell of it.
"For many women, texting is a habit that can not only get out of control, it can turn a man off in no time." Steve dedicates a whole episode of Tough Love Miami to "Dating in the Digital Age." Steve hands all the girls cellphones and tells them they can communicate with their dates before they meet the following day. The experiment only proves that these women rely way too much on texting. Steve says if a man doesn't respond to a text, it's not an excuse to text him a million times before he responds. Have some self control!
"Let me make my point: men hate this sh*t, OK? When you're communicating with a man over a text message, or email, or other any type of ecommunication, use words and grammar." Steve says drop the acronyms like LOL and LMAO. Lay off the exclamation points and stop with all the emoticons. Men are just not into it.
"It's OK to have preferences, but even your preferences have to be realistic." Every single lady has got her list of deal breakers. Steve urges the women in boot camp to recognize that no one is perfect and to let go of these random preconceived notions about what her ideal match looks like. Love comes where you least expect it, but you've got to be open to the possibilities for that to happen.
