Singer to Watch: Yelle

Hey, wasn't I just talking about songs with lyrics I don't understand? My lovely friend Bella sent this adorable French electropop artist my way and implored me to check her out. And holy wow, I can't stop listening (or looking, for that matter!). Her name is Yelle and she's becoming a pretty big deal in France already. I'm not sure she has any cross-over plans in the near future, but I'm going to help her start her US takeover campaign right now by posting a video for her song "Ce Jeu."

She is apparently quite witty with her words, so if any of your high school or college French comes back as you're listening and you want to translate, please do so in the comments! As for me, this is one time when I can just smile and enjoy this tune's infectiousness. To check out the video,

Singer to Watch: Estelle

As British sensation Leona Lewis hurtles towards the USA, there's another singer from across the pond whom I'm really excited about: Estelle. Although she's definitely reminiscent of other R&B singers like Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill, Estelle's sound stands out as something entirely unique.

Her first album, The 18th Day, was a hit in the UK, and these days, she has all kinds of talent collaborating on her new album, Shine, including Wyclef Jean, will.i.am, Swizz Beats, Mark Ronson, John Legend and Kanye West. That's a pretty good list if you're looking to earn fans in America.

Her new album was supposed to come out in February, but that didn't happen - though hopefully the fact that her singles are being released now means it's coming soon. I love both of the songs - "American Boy" and "Wait a Minute (Just a Touch)" - which feature Kanye and John Legend respectively. You can download them at iTunes, and to check out both videos,

Jack the Giant Killer: Nicholas Hoult Has a Super Green Thumb

Between the enthralling series Once Upon a Time and the awesome-looking upcoming Snow White and the Huntsman, I'm really digging Hollywood's obsession with fairy tales. So it's a great time to show off the trailer for Jack the Giant Killer, which takes a crack at classic story Jack and the Beanstalk. Nicholas Hoult plays Jack, a young farm boy who gets his hands on some magic beans, of which he's warned, "whatever you do, don't get them wet." Naturally, he gets them wet immediately, causing a beanstalk to shoot up from the earth into the heavens - and a fairly ornery giant to show up, and it's up to Jack to save the princess from it.

Director Bryan Singer appears to give us all the CGI we can handle to show the giant and the beanstalk's crazy growth, and I'm kind of excited for the blockbuster-y take on the fairy tale. I'm also a fan of Hoult, so I'm happy to see him in this film, as well as Ewan McGregor, who pops up as a knight in shining armor (though if you blink, you might miss him). 2011: The Year in Google

What was on the world's mind in 2011? Rebecca Black, according to Google's Zeitgeist 2011 roundup. The teen singer's viral video wonder "Friday" had over 167 million view on YouTube, and searches for her name made it the number one fastest-rising search term on the site in 2011.

Google's Zeitgeist review of the year is largely made up of the fastest-rising search terms in categories such as people, entertainment, consumer electronics, and news for every region worldwide. Interestingly, the fastest-falling searches are also listed with the once top social network, MySpace, securing the number one spot for losing the most global interest online this year.

Here's a detail of the fastest-moving US search terms in their respective categories:

Living Inside a Painting

I'm excited to present a post from guest writer David Stark!

Recently we produced a video, shot in our Brooklyn studio for the amazingly talented singer Migguel Anggelo, and the title cut from his new CD Donde Estara Matisse. This short film was created by the stylist and artist Helen Quinn, and Helen brilliantly combines stop-motion animation with live action to create a fantasy walk inside a Matisse painting. The artist sings (in Spanish), looking high and low for the iconic French painter, and I have been trapped inside this painted world since. You can watch the video "Donde Estara Matisse" here.

I would love to live in a painted world like this and am now seeing items for the home that would certainly be fitting there too. It’s fun to imagine how to decorate a home in that context. Here are some ideas if you live inside a painting or are similarly inspired by the artist’s painted touch.

Glee-ful Highlights From Episode "I Kissed a Girl"

Everyone's got election fever on this week's Glee, and we find out the results of both the student body and congressional race. Because of the political ad threatening to expose Santana, we watch her deal with her sexuality, and the support she gets (and doesn't get) from those around her. It brings out a soft side of Finn (no, that's not a reference to Santana's preferred insults for Finn), who asks everyone to sing a song celebrating women. Sue also gets taken to task for her love life, but her tactics end up hurting Coach Beiste.

Meanwhile, Puck and Shelby take their forbidden relationship to the next level, and Rachel does something to help Kurt, but she ends up hurting the whole glee club. It's a surprisingly emotional episode, and there are lots of great lines (Santana and Sue really outdo themselves this week), but what made it for me are this week's upbeat, encouraging musical numbers. Let's break it all down into the highlights when you keep reading.

The Victoria's Secret runway extravaganza airs on CBS this evening! In honor of the big TV event, we're taking a look back at the show which was recorded at NYC's Lexington Avenue Armory on Nov. 9.

Between the musical acts and the amazing costumes on the angels, Nov. 9th was a night to remember. Candice Swanepoel was the first down the catwalk in the "Ballet" portion of the show, the first of six-themed sections that also included "Super Angels," "Passion," "Angels Aquatic," "I Put a Spell on You," and "Club Pink." They strutted, interestingly enough, to the song "You Make Me Want to Die" from Taylor Momsen's band, The Pretty Reckless! Candice was followed by Anja Rubik, Lily Aldridge, Alessandra Ambrosio, Chanel Iman, Doutzen Kroes, Adriana Lima, Miranda Kerr, and many more! This was a unique year from the company since they introduced at least 12 new models to the lineup.

It was hard to compete with the over-the-top outfits, gems, and wings, but the musical acts nearly did so. Kanye West was finally able to perform for VS after canceling his 2007 appearance after the sudden death of his mother, Donda West. He dedicated the event to her saying, "I lost my superhero, but now she's my superangel." Kanye went on to sing "Stronger" as the Angels walked by him on stage, then Jay-Z came out for an amazing duo on their Watch the Throne song "N*ggas in Paris." Beyoncé Knowles even came out to see Jay in action, taking a front-row seat only for the duration of the track. Jay and Kanye got the fashion crowd on their feet, and Orlando Bloom was seen doing a little fist pumping!

Orlando was front and center to cheer on his wife, Miranda. It was Miranda's first time on the VS runway since giving birth to Flynn at the beginning of the year. She took multiple turns down the catwalk and finally wore Victoria's Secret's $2.5 million Fantasy Treasure Bra. Orlando gave Miranda a couple of standing ovations, as one of the most enthusiastic famous attendees, which also included Stephen Dorff, Lake Bell, Maxwell, Jack Huston, Lala Vasquez, and Gossip Girl's Matthew Settle.

In addition to Jay and Kanye, Maroon 5 performed "Moves Like Jagger" and lead singer Adam Levine broke from the band temporarily to place a big kiss on the cheek of his angel girlfriend, Anne V. Earlier in the day while backstage, Anne V said she and Adam planned the moment. She said, "I'm a model, he's a singer, we're just doing our jobs and just happen to be together, so maybe we'll do a cute moment but nothing crazy. I'm very excited to have him next to me, it's very special." Nicki Minaj wrapped things up with a rendition of "Super Bass," with newcomer Karlie Kloss closing the show in her fluorescent wings.
