A Fantastic Fear of Everything Trailer: Simon Pegg Might Be a Little Paranoid

Simon Pegg is taking on the horror genre again, with his familiar comedic spin, of course. This time, the Shaun of the Dead scribe is playing a children's book author who's trying to reinvent himself as a crime novelist. Unfortunately, his background research into the lives of murderers causes his deepest phobias to reach epic levels.

Though it seems to be in the same vein as a lot of the actor's previous movies, A Fantastic Fear of Everything looks a bit more complex. I was surprised to learn that though Pegg is producing and starring in the movie, it was actually written and co-directed by film newcomer Crispian Mills. The animation also reminds me of the sort of creativity I adored in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Check out the trailer after the jump

In a recent episode of the BBC's A Night With the Stars, physicist Brian Cox (similar in reputation to Neil deGrasse Tyson, except British) enlisted the help of actor and geek we love, Simon Pegg, to explain the physics of why atoms are so vast yet empty.

Brian leads Simon and physicist Jim Al-Khalili in a giggly demonstration of standing wave principles in relation to the characteristics of atoms. We certainly could use these sorts of explanations in regards to the TARDIS in future Doctor Who episodes, don't you think?

Tom Cruise Follows Protocol Hosting Spanish Royalty at His Latest Premiere

Tom Cruise moved his international press tour for Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol to Madrid yesterday. The actor started his morning with an appearance on Spanish TV's El Hormiguero then hit the red carpet with costars Paula Patton and Simon Pegg. There was a special guest star at the premiere as well, Spain's Duke and Duchess of Alba came out to see the fourth installment of Tom's spy franchise. Fans around the globe will get the chance to see Ghost Protocol in theaters ahead of its Dec. 21 release when the studio prereleases the film onto 200 screens starting tomorrow. Tom and the rest of the stars are headed to Brazil next and are expected back in the States over the weekend prior to Monday's NYC event.

Tom Cruise and Paula Patton continued their traveling ways with a stop in Munich today. They've been promoting Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol around the world and have already popped up in Russia, India, and Japan. Tom and Paula were joined by costars Anil Kapoor and Simon Pegg at their movie's debut at the Dubai Film Festival earlier this week, but the trip wasn't just about work. Tom also visited the Taj Mahal and posed for a few pictures with a crowd of fans. His action-packed franchise is currently in the spotlight, but there's also exciting news that Tom is working on a Top Gun sequel.

Tom Cruise Brings His Mission to Moscow and Talks About Katie's "Family Dance Classes"

Tom Cruise and Paula Patton posed together at the Moscow premiere of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol today. Tom changed up his standard suit with a gray coat to top off his look for the red carpet and a green one for the photo call earlier in the day. Tom's in wintry Russia now, after starting the week in much warmer Dubai. Tom has been promoting Mission: Impossible internationally first, but he'll be swinging through the states on a big press tour later this month. He'll be making the talk-show rounds, of course, but he's already sharing some pretty great anecdotes about life at home with wife Katie Holmes and Suri. Tom's next big role is in Rock of Ages, and apparently Katie should get the credit for his branching out into the musical genre.

Tom spoke about Rock of Ages, saying,"You're just as surprised as I am. Kate kept saying, 'You've got to make a musical.' The dancing of Les Grossman is inspired because Kate is a dancer, she sings, and she would take us to [dance classes]. [She would say] 'I've got this dance class for the family. Come on, we've got to do it. We've got hip-hop class. We've got to do it.' "

Tom Cruise Accomplishes a Red-Carpet Mission at the Dubai Film Festival

Tom Cruise spent today in the company of his Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol castmates at the Dubai International Film Festival. Tom and friends Paula Patton, Simon Pegg, and Anil Kapoor began their day with a press conference then they changed into formal wear for the United Arab Emirates premiere of the film. The desert of the UAE plays a prominent backdrop in the film as does the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the city and the world. Tom scaled the skyscraper for a stunt and had this to say about the impressive climb. Tom said, "[up there] I have one little pick and one little rope, I remember just being there saying this is a moment of truth. [It's] one thing seeing it, another thing trying to accomplish [the climb]."

The entire cast, with the exception of Jeremy Renner, is already on their way to Moscow for their next appearance with future stops expected in Mexico, Brazil, and of course the States. The fourth installment in the franchise was expected to be Tom's last as super spy Ethan Hunt, but there's growing speculation he could return. According to Jeremy, it's possible Tom might sign on for a fifth MI film pending box office success and Tom's willingness to play the role.

Paul: The Buddy Movie Goes Extraterrestrial

In Paul, British comedians and frequent costars Nick Frost and Simon Pegg reunite for the first time since 2007's Hot Fuzz. Frost and Pegg costar as Clive and Graeme, two sci-fi fanboys on vacation in America to catch Comic-Con before heading off on an alien-inspired road trip.

The buddies are having the time of their lives stopping by UFO-related landmarks, but their trip takes a momentous turn when they come upon an actual alien. Named Paul, the little green guy is trying to escape a department of the government that has held him captive for a few years and now wants to harvest his brain for research. Voiced by Seth Rogen, Paul is a CGI creation in the form of the big-eyed, big-headed aliens humans have imagined for years.

Hot on their trail are a number of trackers: Jason Bateman is a Men in Black-type with very little sense of humor, Bill Hader and Joe Lo Truglio are a couple of clueless agents who don't know they're following an alien, and David Koechner is a redneck out to get the boys for being foreign. The ensemble of funnymen and cameos by other favorites, like Jane Lynch and Blythe Danner, adds another dimension of fun.

However, Paul is not necessarily all it could be. To find out what I liked and what I didn't, just

Rogen pulls off a feat of making Paul a real character, imbuing him with more than just a voice. Paul has distinctive, laid-back mannerisms and a friendly, full personality that makes him more than just a cartoonish afterthought. On the flip side, Kristen Wiig isn't used to her full potential. As Ruth, a religious zealot who has her mind blown by the existence of Paul, the very funny actress is squandered. As Ruth embraces a new lifestyle of doing what she wants, Wiig gets one running joke: cussing. Though her phrasing is often very creative, it gets old fast.

Paul caters to a very specific audience, to a fault. If you're not attuned to all pop culture references, you may wonder why the rest of the crowd is tittering at a seemingly insignificant line. In general, the movie is often funny, though never truly hilarious. And once you get to the climax and final act, the jokes drop off in favor of wrapping up the story. At that point, it becomes clear that the plot is paper thin, and you get bored waiting for the resolution.

The problem Frost/Pegg fans may have with this installment is that it's grossly inferior to Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead. In those films, the concepts and plots are both more inspired and edgier. While Paul shares the brand of humor of its predecessors, it's only a mildly satisfying fix for fans.

The actors are busy focusing on their film after months of shooting around the world in places as far-flung as Prague and Dubai, but Tom gets enough free time to explore Canada with his daughter Suri. His wife Katie Holmes is in Canada at the moment as well, and she's the one currently taking advantage of the city's shopping and snacking opportunities with Suri.

New, Full-Length Paul Trailer Is Here - And It's Funny!

When the first teaser for Paul came out, I was disappointed that it wasn't funnier. But I'm relieved to see this longer trailer for the flick, which makes it look so much better. If the first trailer was a primer to introduce you to the premise - two nerdy protagonists, played by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, visit Area 51 and meet alien Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) - then this trailer actually shows off the humor you'd expect from this group. Not to mention that you also get to see more of the awesome cast, like Bill Hader, Jane Lynch, Jason Bateman, and Kristen Wiig. Watch the new clip when you
