Silk is like that good-looking celebrity you admire from afar for a while, and when you finally get the chance to sit down and talk to them, they turn out to be vapid and uninteresting. The strength of this movie lies in the visuals, as was the case with another of director François Girard's aesthetically appealing films, The Red Violin. Nature appears to be at its most lush and there are some gorgeous costumes.

Opening in limited release this Friday, Silk follows "a married silkworm merchant-turned-smuggler (Michael Pitt) in 19th century France traveling to Japan for his town's supply of silkworms after a disease wipes out their African supply. During his stay in Japan, he becomes obsessed with the concubine of a local baron." Keira Knightley and Alfred Molina also star, so I look forward to seeing Silk as soon as possible.

We may not be getting the crisp fall weather just yet, but we are getting previews for tons of movies opening in the fall. In preparation for this autumn and winter at the theaters, I've broken up the lengthy list of upcoming movies into many small themes for my Fall Movie Preview series. This way, you'll be in the know when the chillier months roll around, bringing a whole new crop of new films.

This week's Gossip Girl is a big improvement over last week's, just because things (ridiculous things!) are happening, for once. Chuck and Blair reunite to save Serena, Vanessa and Dan drink together, Nate gets an apartment in Murray Hill, and we learn Rufus is a huge dummy with money. Oh, and Georgina is back, and the girl is saved, which is a very fun twist indeed.

And that's how you do a finale. This season's last episode of Chuck has it all: romance, drama, fight scenes, Jeffster!, intrigue, nostalgia, and a good deal of promise for — please, oh please — a third season. And despite warnings from the show's creators, I'm not exactly burning my living room over it; I'm just excited that I got to see one darn fine hour of television.

Michelle Pfeiffer and Rupert Friend make a lovely, beautifully costumed duo in Chéri, a romantic drama set in the 1920s. From the trailer it doesn't look so much like a drama as it does a sweet, funny little period piece, but apparently the story takes place in Paris "where the son of a courtesan retreats into a fantasy world after being forced to end his relationship with the older woman who educated him in the ways of love." It looks like a nice enough movie, but so far I'm mostly mesmerized by the silks and lace, pearls and hats on display in the trailer.

On this week's Project Runway, Heidi told the contestants that they would be designing an outfit for a high-powered, glamorous woman. I loved that Blayne immediately thought of Hillary Clinton — and then groaned to the camera that the last thing he wanted to whip up was a neon pants suit. Lucky for him, the client was not a trail-blazing politico after all.

300 director Zack Snyder's next project is Watchmen, an adaptation of the 1980s comic book series by Alan Moore. For many weeks there have been rumors going around about who, exactly, we'd be watching in Watchmen (Keanu Reeves? Jude Law?) and now that the cast has been finalized, I am even more excited for this project.

As the episode title suggests, the loose "theme" of this week's "Desperate Housewives" was women's clothing — what women (and, uh, some men) choose to wear, take off, and keep in the closet. It was some good, classic "DH," with improbable plot lines and a few great one-liners.
Gaby and Edie are suddenly BFF, and return from their shopping spree to find Gaby's entire wardrobe ruined from water damage — though, as we'll see twice later, her lingerie drawer was unaffected.
