Movie Preview: The Mysteries of Pittsburgh

It wasn't my favorite of the 2008 Sundance movies I saw, but The Mysteries of Pittsburgh was still an interesting watch - and probably even more so for those who have read the Michael Chabon book on which the movie is based. Jon Foster plays the main character of Art Bechstein, a young man who passes his last Summer before entering the "real world" working at a book warehouse, meeting regularly with his dad (a shady Nick Nolte) for dinner, and sleeping with his boss, Phlox (Mena Suvari). Things get considerably more interesting, however, when Art meets the alluring Jane (Sienna Miller) and her boyfriend Cleveland (Peter Sarsgaard). Suddenly, Art's Summer goes from mundane to exhilarating.

Sienna Miller Cast as Maid Marian in Nottingham

Sienna Miller will play Marian to Russell Crowe's Sheriff of Nottingham, BBC News reports today. Miller confirmed recently that barring any actors strike, she'll take on the role of Maid Marian in a version of the Robin Hood story titled Nottingham. Oscar-winning screenwriter Brian Helgeland is crafting the script (he won the little gold man in 1997 for L.A. Confidential) and Sir Ridley Scott is reportedly signed on to direct. BBC News describes the plot:

The movie is a twist on the classic story, with the Sheriff of Nottingham cast as a sympathetic figure up against a not-so-heroic Robin Hood.

Movie Preview: The Gorgeous Dylan Thomas Movie With Keira and Sienna

Wow, the trailer for The Edge of Love (previously titled The Best Time of Our Lives) looks breathtakingly beautiful. The film follows the true story of a love triangle between the poet Dylan Thomas (played by Brothers and Sisters' Matthew Rhys!), his wife Caitlin (Sienna Miller) and a woman named Vera Phillips (Keira Knightley). Vera eventually married William Killick (the ever-chilling Cillian Murphy) but still couldn't tear herself away from her poet - despite becoming close friends with Caitlin. In the strange real-life story, the jealous William ultimately attacked Dylan and Caitlin's house.

Comparisons could be made to Atonement, for sure, as the visual tone of the film has that same sweeping, desperate romance (and the hair, makeup and costume artists have done an impeccable job on this film as well). Knightley even says her husky "Come back" in the trailer. But it also looks distinctly, grippingly different. Especially for those of you who enjoyed Becoming Jane, or any number of other dramatic films about writers' lives, you must treat yourself to this extremely beautiful trailer.

There's no U.S. release date yet (sad!) but the film premieres at the Edinburgh Film Festival on June 18 and opens elsewhere in the UK June 20. To watch the trailer, read more.

Sundance Review: The Mysteries of Pittsburgh

The Mysteries of Pittsburgh is great. And then it's terrible. And then it's puzzling. Then it's truthful. Then you go, "whaaaa?" And it ends and you're like, "eh."

It's not a bad movie, by any means. The music is fantastic, for example. Many of the directorial choices (the way shots are set up, the use of voiceover narration, etc.) are superb. Several of the performances are arresting. But the dialog is stilted and the action feels extremely rushed. I attended the "world premiere" of the movie at Sundance, and director Rawson Marshall Thurber (Dodgeball) introduced it by thanking the citizens of Pittsburgh and professing his undying love for the Michael Chabon book on which the movie is based. His love is apparent, but it isn't enough to make the film truly enjoyable.

The story follows Art Bechstein (Jon Foster), a young man who, wishing to avoid responsibility for the Summer before he joins the real world, is living in Pittsburgh, working at a book warehouse. He dreads the monthly dinners with his father (Nick Nolte), a shady individual with power over most of the city, and he regularly sleeps with his boss Phlox (Mena Suvari). Then he meets Jane (Sienna Miller) and her boyfriend Cleveland (Peter Sarsgaard) and his life instantly becomes more interesting. To find out more about this, read more.

The movie version of Chabon's book focuses on the relationships between coarse bisexual Cleveland, vibrant Jane, and average Art, as the line between friendship and something-more starts to blur - between all three of them. Like so many movies, though, the love scenes heavily favor the female form. Even in the scenes with naked men - with only naked men - the filming is much more reserved, conservative. This makes me wonder if the filmmakers were not particularly comfortable portraying homosexuality. I haven't read the book, but I heard people who have grumble that the relationship between Cleveland and Art in the film is lamely subdued.

For the most part, the performances are good, though Jon Foster seems so much like John Krasinski - minus the ease and sweetness - I found myself wishing they'd just gotten Krasinski instead. Nick Nolte is gravel-throated and terrifying. Peter Sarsgaard is someone I have often thought of as a lazy, dopey actor. At the very least, those are often the characters he plays, and it makes me wonder. But in this movie he is commanding and aggressively committed. I started to feel toward him what the characters around him felt: irresistibly drawn to him, yet annoyed with his behavior.

I often wonder what I would think of Sienna Miller if I had no idea who she was in the tabloid sense. I think she does a fine job in this film, but she always seems so aware of her own beauty, her own power. And this is a problem when she's trying to play normal girls with major insecurities and issues. Whether this is her issue to overcome as an actress or something that falls to directors, I'm not sure.

Bottom line: There are moments of real truth and beauty, but it's all undermined by moments of total ridiculousness.

Sundance Spotlight: The Mysteries of Pittsburgh

I am so thrilled to go to Sundance this year, and I simply can't wait to see as many movies as I possibly can while I'm out there! For the next few days I'll be highlighting some of the films I'm most curious to see. Today's spotlight: The Mysteries of Pittsburgh.

One of the few Sundance films to have an official website, The Mysteries of Pittsburgh is a film adaptation of the novel by author Michael Chabon (Wonder Boys, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay). Chabon's work seems to lend itself to the movie format (I loved Wonder Boys) so I'm anxious to see how this one turns out. To see who's in it and what the story's about, read more.

The plot description reads, "Set in Pittsburgh in the early eighties, the story chronicles the last true summer of Art Bechstein's (Jon Foster) youth. Stuck in a dead-end job working for his eccentric sometime girlfriend Phlox (Mena Suvari), and forced into an endless series of airless dinners with his mobster father (Nick Nolte), Art begins to believe that perhaps he doesn't even exist at all. What begins as a mundane summer is quickly interrupted when he encounters a beautiful debutante (Sienna Miller) and her lusty, no good hoodlum of a boyfriend Cleveland (Peter Sarsgaard). Together they reveal a side of Art and Pittsburgh that he has never known."

So that's where Mena Suvari's been. Huh. This is also the project that earned Miller some bad press a while back when she badmouthed Pittsburgh in Rolling Stone and then backpedaled. I guess we'll see if she managed to cover up her disdain long enough to make the movie.

Sienna Miller First Official Cast Member of G.I. Joe Movie

Though there has been some speculation surrounding possible cast members of the live-action G.I. Joe movie (most notably, that Marky Mark might have a starring role), today there's official news about the first actor to sign on.

Sienna Miller will play the female lead, "a raven-haired baroness and sexy femme fatale skilled in espionage." Raven haired, huh? It will be interesting to see Miller with hair that's dark all over instead of just at the roots.

Variety says the story "is set at Brussels-based GIJOE, an acronym for the Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity, and revolves around an international coed force of operatives who use high-tech equipment to battle Cobra, an evil org headed by a Scottish arms dealer."

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. This week I can also tell you what not to rent: Premonition starring Sandra Bullock. You will most likely regret it.

Factory Girl
Despite the controversy this movie stirred up during production, the film didn't do well at the box office, nor did it wow the critics. Still, it's an interesting movie to see because of the time period it deals with and the subject matter: Edie Sedgwick. Sienna Miller channels Sedgwick, the glamorous starlet of the 1960s who became pop artist Andy Warhol's (played by Guy Pearce) muse. In the movie Sedgwick also flirts with a musician character (played by Hayden Christiansen) who is clearly based on Bob Dylan. The movie chronicles Sedgwick's rise to fame and subsequent fall into obscurity. The costumes in this film are fantastic, as is Miller's makeup, both of which you can get for yourself, thanks to my friend Fab!

First Look: Sienna Miller, Steve Buscemi in Interview

I first heard of Interview back in January when the movie screened at Sundance. Now, with a release date of July 13, a trailer has hit the Web and I must say I am completely intrigued. Directed by Steve Buscemi, Interview is a remake of a film by Dutch director Theo Van Gogh and it takes place over the course of one night. Buscemi plays a respected political journalist named Pierre who has been tasked with interviewing a young starlet (Sienna Miller) about whom he knows nothing. The unlikely pair spend an evening interviewing each other.

With that seemingly simplistic setup, I'm impressed with how much palpable tension there already is in just the trailer. Buscemi is utterly guileless for a change, not relying on goofiness but rather adopting a kind of careworn professionalism. For her part, Miller acts in the way she has, in recent months, been painted to be in tabloid stories: egotistic, immature, and in love with her own "career" even though it doesn't appear to have much substance yet.
