In the darkly funny and sweet indie drama Shrink, Kevin Spacey's Hollywood psychiatrist protagonist is going through an inner turmoil so profound even his movie star-status digs can't cheer him up. I, however, couldn't get enough of the snazzy sets. I was especially drawn to the sleek, curvaceous poolside chaise lounge Spacey passes out on in the film, but I hadn't given it a second thought until I saw it in my latest DWR catalog! Movie Preview: Kevin Spacey in Shrink

The story in Shrink seems not unlike that of another movie that I recently previewed, The Answer Man: The guy who's supposed to have all the answers (in this case a famous shrink) is in fact, just as screwed up as the rest of us. Shrink, however, seems to have a few more layers and a little more weight. In fact, I found myself totally absorbed in this story - just by watching the trailer.

The synopsis is as follows: "Unable to cope with a recent personal tragedy, LA's top celebrity shrink turns into a pothead with no concern for his appearance and a creeping sense of his inability to help his patients." Movie News Roundup: Stephen King, Kevin Spacey, Sam Raimi Get Busy

Lots of intriguing movie news coming out of Hollywood today:

Kevin Spacey will star in the indie film Shrink as a depressed therapist who likes to ah, partake of the ganja. (A pot-smoking therapist? That sounds familiar.) His clients in the movie will include "Hollywood characters" like Robin Williams, Keke Palmer, Laura Ramsey and Gore Vidal, among others.
Columbia and Sam Raimi will team up together again after their Spider-Man ventures for yet another adaptation of a Dennis Lehane novel. Lehane's books make excellent screenplays, apparently, as Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone and the upcoming DiCaprio-Scorsese project Shutter Island have all been adapted. Next up, Raimi will direct a film version of The Given Day, which follows Boston cops in 1919.
Speaking of adaptations, the rights to an as-yet-unpublished Stephen King novella Throttle - which he wrote with his son Joe Hill - have already been optioned. The story is about "father-son members of a motorcycle gang that's chased through the desert by an 18-wheel tanker truck." The novella will be a part of a 2009 anthology dedicated to I Am Legend author Richard Matheson.

Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill Rise Early For The Today Show

Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill were together this morning for a visit to The Today Show in NYC. Brad talked with Ann Curry about Moneyball and the film's many Oscar nominations. He's in the running to take home a best actor statue, while Jonah's up for his first-ever Academy Award as a best supporting actor. The picture's additionally in contention for best film of the year, best adapted screenplay, and best achievement in film editing.

The guys reminisced about working on Moneyball, and Jonah reflected on a particularly awesome prank Brad pulled. They've mentioned before that Brad tricked out Jonah's golf cart with George Michael paraphernalia, but more details were disclosed to Ann. Jonah spoke about the cart, which was rigged to play the song "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" when it turned on. He revealed, "If it was just that, that would be crazy. That would be annoying for me. But he also had it shrink-wrapped bright pink, like neon pink. And he had superimposed a picture of me and George Michael on the front that said, 'I'm Jonah Hill and I love Wham!' And then it had wedding noisemakers under the cart. And so I'd have a meeting with someone and I'd drive up in this insane, absurdly Liberace-style [thing]."

Easy Ways to Cut Back on Sugar

Carbs and fats tend to take the blame for weight gain, but excessive sugar intake can be part of the problem, too. If you're looking to improve your diet or shrink your waistline, try tracking your sugar consumption. Is it something you crave regularly? Part of every meal? Assess where sugar stands in your diet and make the following swaps to minimize your intake.

Go Greek: Standard yogurts - especially the fruit-flavored variety - tend to be high in sugar. Pick plain Greek yogurt instead to amp up your protein consumption and avoid excess sugars. Compare the nutritional content of different Greek yogurt brands and add fresh fruit if you prefer a sweeter taste.
Nix the cans: Thanks to thick, sweet syrups, canned fruits contain a higher level of sugar than fresh or frozen versions. Avoid canned fruits whenever possible, but if that's your only choice, be sure to drain the can and rinse the fruit to remove as much sugar as possible.
Be picky about grains: Whole-grain cereals and granola can be high in added sugars. Make sure to read the nutritional information and also look into sugar-free cereal options, or try to make your own fruit and nut bars when you need a carb fix. Just looking for something to add crunch to your meal? Try raw, unsalted nuts or homemade trail mix.

5 Ways to Banish Postholiday Bloating

Ways to Keep Knee Pain at Bay

When a good workout leaves my muscles sore, I know I'm getting stronger every day and revel in the pain. But when a long run leaves me with achy knees, I'm reminded that I'm getting a little bit older and a little more creaky. Unfortunately, my knees have been talking back a lot lately - just another reminder that as your age increases so does the amount of time you need to spend doing body maintenance. A long run requires a long yoga session and hours on the bike translate into time spent stretching and strengthening. With all that in mind, here's my happy knee to-do list:

Roll it: I roll my iliotibial bands religiously (here's more details on rolling the ITB). The ITB is a band of fascia that runs from the outside of the pelvis to just below the knee. Unlike muscle, fascia is not very flexible - I call it the body's shrink wrap. Using a foam roller and slowly rolling out this band can do wonders for knee pain by adding a little length to the tightened band. Turn the 60-minute guilty pleasure of your fave reality TV show into body time and roll out your legs in front of the boob tube.
Stretch 'em: Tight hamstrings and calves, both of which cross over the back of the knee joint, can yank on the joint, pulling it out of alignment. Keep your hamstrings loose with these stretches and stretch your calves regularly, especially if you run, is imperative to keeping you on the road. As you age, it's important to hold your stretches for a little bit longer to reap the benefits. Increase the time in the stretch to 45 seconds to a minute.
Strengthen: Strong hips make for a happy runner, and at least two times a week I work my glute meds, the stabilizing muscles on the outside of the pelvis. Strong glute meds decrease the sway of the pelvis, cutting down on both low back and knee pain. I do two to three sets of 20 side-stepping squats with a theraband.

With a little TLC and common sense, you can prevent many problems of the weekend warrior. If your pain doesn't go away with time off and rest, make an appointment with a physical therapist. Having a trained professional diagnose an injury early on can prevent it from becoming a chronic condition.

No, that isn't your eyesight going bad on you: while you're paying the same old price for your favorite packaged foods, many of them are getting smaller. According to The New York Times, food companies, still sensitive to the country's high unemployment rate, have adjusted for rising costs of materials by camouflaging foods in smaller packages rather than simply hiking prices.

Among the guilty party? Chicken of the Sea tuna, bags of Doritos, Tostitos, and Fritos, Nabisco saltines, and Honey Maid graham crackers. This phenomenon's nothing new - we first noticed it in 2008 with ice cream containers (case in point: Haagen-Dazs), then cartons of Tropicana orange juice. Still, it's maddening to think that consumers can be fooled by smaller sizes. What have you noticed shrinking in size?
