Shoot 'Em Up: Good, Dirty Fun

There couldn't be a better title for this movie than Shoot 'Em Up because, well, that's what happens. It's loud. It's crass. And most of all, it's hilarious. This is the perfect film to see with your rowdiest girlfriends, possibly after a few martinis. There's tons of raunchiness, some sick humor and so much outrageous gunfire your ears will be ringing by the end. It's violence with a very healthy sense of humor. Yet what makes it all work is Clive Owen as Smith, our rough-and-tumble hero, a grumpy, low-income version of James Bond who was weaned on weapons and, apparently, carrots.

Indeed, carrots are a running gag throughout the film - Smith chomps on them when he needs to think, and creatively employs them as murder weapons, making him a kind of R-rated warrior version of Bugs Bunny. It's this kind of silliness that makes Shoot 'Em Up the perfect combination of high-energy, over-the-top violence and absurd humor. Simply put: it's pure entertainment. To find out more about why,

Chomping a carrot by himself one night, Smith observes a man with a gun pursuing a frightened pregnant woman. Smith reluctantly follows them, a gun fight ensues, Smith saves the woman long enough to help her give birth before she's shot. Smith realizes both the woman and baby were wanted by some evil folks, most notably the leery, sneery, slimy-in-every-corner-of-his-soul Hertz (Paul Giamatti). Smith brings the baby to a prostitute friend (Monica Bellucci, oozing sex and sympathy) who eventually agrees to help him save the child from all the evildoers. Plenty of chases, fighting, inventive gun play, sex and bloodshed follows, peppered with glib one-liners.

I had no idea how much of a parody this movie would turn out to be. It's so ridiculously over-the-top, you can't help but laugh. It almost feels wrong to be laughing at such darkly twisted things, but it's not that we find murder funny, it's that it's all so utterly absurd. However, the best thing about this wildly entertaining ride is that it's not a full-on spoof. There are certainly elements that remind me of movies like Hot Fuzz, its tongue so firmly planted in its cheek. Yet there's a streak of seriousness to Shoot 'Em Up that holds everything just anchored in reality enough to keep the audience riveted. And it's especially funny to watch the actors take it all so very seriously. I know many of you will go for the Clive Owen, so it'll be a pleasant surprise to find that it's a hugely funny, bloody movie to boot.

The Expendables 2 Trailer: Liam Hemsworth Shoots and Scores

The bad boys of The Expendables are back in the trailer for the sequel, and this time they have a hot, new secret weapon: Liam Hemsworth. Given that the original film features action stars of many decades (including Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, and Chuck Norris), it seems fitting that they've made room for the Hunger Games star as their latest edition (fun fact: Hemsworth was originally cast in the first film, but his part was cut). In The Expendables 2, Hemsworth joins the gang as a sniper named Billy the Kid as they face down a villain played by Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Don't try to follow too much of the story in the trailer, though; it's mostly a mélange of shoot-'em-up sequences, fistfights, and explosions. It's not that it's not fun, however, and it's definitely worth the watch to see Hemsworth in action star mode. The movie comes out on Aug. 17, and you can check out the trailer when you

Goodwill, Salvation Army and Thrift Shops! Tarnished silver-plated ornate trays, milky glass bottles and vases, and vintage style plates to adorn an entire wall can be very pricey if you shop at antique stores to source them. Thrift stores - especially those in small towns across America - can be a treasure trove of unusual home decor items at a fraction of the cost. One celebrity client whose home I styled for a magazine shoot was insistent nothing from Goodwill could enter her home, so I simply wrapped my thrift store finds in tissue paper and tossed it into an Anthropologie shopping bag. She loved it. Can you believe that half the items on the dining table came from Goodwill?

Brown Thumb? Rent Plants. One way to make a patio or garden look lush and gorgeous is to rent mature palm trees and flowering bushes. If you're planning to have an outdoor party but don't want the cost of expensive plants, ask your local nursery if they'll rent them to you. At about 10 -20 percent of cost, they'll deliver the plants, set them up, and take them away after the party (or in my case, the photo shoot).

Bruce Willis Wants to Die Hard . . . With a Fragrance

All hail the great bald one! Bruce Willis fans should be overjoyed today, because the actor just signed a deal for his own fragrance to be sold worldwide. There's no word on what the scent's notes will be yet (sweat, gunmetal, smoke, and explosions?), but it's launching quickly and will be in stores in July.

I have been known to enjoy a good Bruce shoot-'em-up flick, and there's no denying that he's a striking man. But it'll be interesting to see how this cologne smells, since almost all the characters he plays are inevitably dirty, bleeding, and running for their lives. Maybe it's a guy thing? Anyway, it'll be fun to see how this plays out, especially since Bruce's ex Demi Moore has her own fragrance out as well. Could Ashton, The Fragrance, be next?
